What are the methods of playing an append game without a key disc? I see lots of append games on ebay but the key games are rarer and cost more.

-patches: I've only seen one for BM 3rd Mix, are there any others?
-gameshark-like parallel port cheat device for the PS1: it allows you to search the files and execute the append.exe instead of the normal one? Is that right and what is the name of this, and are there any places to buy one cheap?
-are there any others?

Another method is stealth modding your PSX. Most of the Pop'n appends don't need keys when you play them on a stealth PSX. Doesn't work with BM tho >_<

Uh, what?

Stealth modding only bypasses the mod check. I have a stealth modded PSX, and it still doesn't let you play it. It'll let me play my patched appends and my original Key discs, but not unpatched appends.

Same goes with PnM 2-4, I still need to use my PnM 1, 5, or 6 key discs to play 2-4, regardless of a stealth mod.

I think there are patches for every one out there (I've seen them for GottaMix 1-2, Club Mix, and 5th), but I don't know how or where to get them. I haven't heard of a GS code to just go straight to the append executable.

I'd appreciate it if someone could point me to those. I've only ever seen one for 3rd mix ( disgust.gif ) on www.megagames.com, unless the other patches are not only anti-mod-detection but anti-swap as well. And I can't find much via Google...

You must be using a 4-wire mod then.

I have a 7-wire stealth modchip, and I can play Pop'n 3-4 without a keydisc. Pop'n is the only bemani that has let me do this, but it's still pretty nice.

Anywho, can anyone tell me what cheat device(s) would allow me to browse the files on the CD (and select the append file) or verify that those patches make the game no-swap or guide me to some patches that do make it no-swap?

It's just called a generic game enhancer. Every online store that sells it is allowed to brand it however they want. As long as it doesn't say Gameshark, it'll work. Just look for a game enhancer for parallel ports, should cost no more than $10.

That beign said, the original Beatmania can be found cheap on eBay, and has some cool songs.

No, I have a 7-wire stealth.

Cheat devices-wise, any should work, if you have a no-mod PSX though, you'll need to use ones like GoldFinger, or generic Game Enhancers.

To make it no-swap, you'll need a code, which like I said, don't think exists.

Wait ... what do you mean by no-swap? When I said no-swap I meant that you wouldn't have to use a key disc and swap to the append. Maybe I was using it wrong, but I don't know how YOU are using it.

But anyways, I bought Beatmania 1st mix (is it technically 2nd mix?) off of eBay this morning, so I don't really need this stuff anyways. Thanks though.

I remember a while back reading a hack where you could copy the boot loader file from a key disc with the files from an append disc and burn a PSX image out of those to create a fully bootable append disc.

That was a while ago, and I despise 5-key, so try checking google or something.
