In one of the smaller booths, Junior Asparagus and I played a fun new ballroom dancing simulation game. This game, XTango, is created by the company BinaryCraft for the XBOX. It features a man who leads, and a woman who follows. The leader, depending on the status of the couple's dance, determines what moves to do next by pushing various directional and command buttons. The follower then matches what the leader input. If this is done successfully, they execute their dance move. As the couple's status increases (depicted by a colored rose on the side of the screen), their ability to do more complicated moves grows. Although I don't know if this concept will eventually make it to the consumer, it will be an interesting game and concept to look out for.

Not suprisingly, it plays just like it too. There's 2 people controlling, though. That's the major difference. And that there's ballroom dancing. Which was pretty intricate, I might add. It impressed me a lot.

ps - One of the songs was done by Jennifer Lopez, so I'm guessing they have some other big-name artists slated to be in the game.

J Dogg was before Bryan. E10.gif

There was a pretty substantial songlist already. There was also Shakira and some other pretty famous songs that are used for that kind of dancing.

You may have noticed that the game was being demoed on an X-box developers console (looks a little different). I had a chance to speak with someone from the company briefly and I asked him if this meant it was coming out strictly for X-box. He said they were interested in porting the game to *all* of the different platforms.

I sort of get the feeling it all depends on wether or not the game can find some distribution. I hope it does, it was a pretty cool concept, and can make up for a lack of Bust-A-Move games coming out anymore frown.gif . Konami are you listening? Tango Tango Revolution?? heh ok maybe not E10.gif but this game needs to find it's way into the homes of music game fans one way or another...

Yeah, I distinctly remember hearing that song.

I got a video of this to upload, I'll get around to it in a bit.

The key difference between XTango and other music/dance games is the two player cooperative dynamic. Believe me it is quite an interesting feeling when playing boy/girl.
Rather than having the computer tap out a beat of buttons and directions to follow, the lead dancer is effectively doing this themselves, while the follower has to keep up and copy their moves. Male or female can lead.

So, for the follower, the gameplay has the same appeal as a game like Bust a Groove or DDR, but the complexity and point value of the moves is based on their ability to work together as a team rather than one person's ability to follow the computer's rhythm. Being the leader has its own challenges because you have the responsibility of initiating the complex moves and combos, while also making sure player 2 is able to follow along.

The full game will have a world tour mode, where couples travel to different countries, first competing in the street showoff and then moving on to the ballroom challenge. Throughout the game you can earn various upgrades to your characters' abilities as well as new outfits. We are also planning on having single player game modes where you can either lead or follow. As a leader you will be trying to build up combos and do the most complicated moves, whereas following the computer provides gameplay similar to other rhythm music games.

One of the features of the game is the ability to use any MP3 on your XBox harddrive, so that you can dance along with the music of your choice. We were very excited about the response we received at E3, and we're glad to hear that you guys enjoyed the game. If all goes well, you will see this game (XTango is a working title, it may change) on store shelves by the end of the year! frust.gif

At first I wasn't too impressed about the whole concept, even if it required two people to cooperate, but just the MP3's part totally caught my interest. It'd also be nice to see other forms of dance, such as salsa, if it hasn't been done so already.
