non DX as in no insert foam? |
basically yes. i don't know if there is anything else that differs them from regular pads. if it is then i don't know y i would pay 30 bucks more for a dense foam pad. |

Lets categorize pads w/ inserts as Ignition pads. Ignition pad is basically a soft pad with a rubber grip bottom, a sleeve for the insert, raised arrows, and top surface thats a lil durable. You don't have to necessarily mod these pads before you play. These pads generally last longer and feel better (comfy foam ) than an unmodded non-ignition pad.
As for places to get a non-ignition soft pad w/ nonslip btm, there is levelsix, redoctane, buynshop These pads don't have the top surface like the xbox soft pad, but it rarely tears. The grip btm should address tearing on the btm of the pad, but may not prevent the rubber from tearing from the edges of the pad. If you chair mod these pads, the pads become much more durable. |

I finally got my pads in today, and as promised I am letting you know how they are. I bidded on two of the Vortz v3.0 pads on ebay for a grand total of $54.98 for the two pads and shipping.
I will give my review in the same format as ddrwannabbe123 (if he doesn't mind ) because it works, and I don't want to make something up. I have only opened one pad so far, and I might be comparing this pad side by side with a friend's RO ignition pad sometime with week, so I will update.
Also note that I am using the pad on an xbox running stepmania using the Game-Elements Gemini controller adapter from Walmart.
Review for $54.98 Vorts pads (2) + $10 Game-Elements Gemini controller converter (1)
Price: I think this is a killer deal because this is the lowest price I have seen anywhere for two new ignition pads.
Shipping: About half of the price for the pads($24.99) is shipping, which I think is ridiculous, but most ebay shipping is crazy anyway. I won the bid and paid for the pads last Tuesday night, and they arrived today (Monday). I guess the shipping was fast enough for ground, but Fedex has listed the package as being on the truck for delivery ever since Saturday, which kinda made me anxious. But enough with the shipping. Just know that it gets there within a week.
Packaging: The packaging is the exact same as the stuff I saw in the pictures in Ezzelin's post (found here). But, the pads also come with a small package with some stupid instructions written in Engrish (my favorite being, "Young children must be guided to us it or need parents and teachers to accompany, in case to be tumbled by it"). Included are 4 small disks which are sticky on both sides when the paper is removed. The Instructions say to put one in each corner, but I haven't done this yet. The pad is stable enough on my carpet. Also note that the pads strongly smell of new shoes. It isn't that bad since I have the fan going in my room, but I will be curious as to how long it stays around.
Assembly: As easy as any other ignition pad, though I have never assembled one. The three pieces of foam fit together, and it zips together easily enough, though it is a tight fit.
ddrwannabbe123 wrote: | Ok, by this time you are probably like "C'mon you stupid moron talk about the mat." So I will. |
Sensitivity: I am gonna go with the exact same thing ddrwannabbe123 said about the BNS, "The pad seems to be sensitive so you don't have to stop but that doesn't mean you can set your toe and it will sense it." I will say that it was much better than my old naki soft mat (even though I was getting pretty good with it). The only annoyance I have is that it is kinda annoying going through the song wheel on the pad, but it could be because I am either used to my soft pad or it hasn't had proper break in.
Mat "feel": It feels alright to me. The raised arrows are very nice, and the non-raised areas have a fluffly feel to them from the cover. I haven't played on my friend's RO in about a week, but the pad feels just a bit different from the RO from what I can remember, but I think this is just due to not having been broken in (my friend and his brother play cata's and stuff on their RO pads for atleast an hour daily).
Performance: Excellent so far. I double AA'ed my first song on it, and got A's and B's playing songs on standard and a few on hard. I also played the first few songs barefoot which I never did on my soft mat because it would stick to my feet, but the Vortz pad gave me no problems barefoot. When I put on socks it felt a little better, but I never felt like I was going to slip or fall (except when I got off balance )
I didn't do any measuring, but from eyeballing my PS2 cord lengths, I would say the Vortz pad is anywhere from 3/4ths to the same length of a standard PS2 cord, but mine is a bit longer because of the converter.
Sliding and Bunching: No bunching or sliding at all. I was playing standards (breakdown, tsugaru) and some 7-8 heavys (cowgirl, kick the can) on a carpet.
Converter: I added this one, but I am using the Game-Elements Gemini converter. I got this from Walmart for only $10. It is working perfectly as far as I can tell. All jumps are hitting and there is no lag. The only bad thing is that I have to go to another Walmart sometime this week (which sucks IMO) to get another one since there was only one left when I got mine yesterday.
Overall: I will recommend these pads to everyone I know who plays DDR. For $54.98 for two pads of very similar quality to RO Ignition 2.0's (so far from what I can tell), this is a very good deal. I have hopes that these pads will last for quite a while since my month old soft pad is still working well, and I can't do crazy 9 or 10 foot songs right now, but I will keep you updated. Also, I hope to compare these pads to my friend's ROs, and I will go unpack and test the other pad after I finish up reading some history.
Also, thanks for recommending these pads to me, vsamaco! Sorry for the long post too! |

i was wonderin if DDR Extreme comin out this fall will come with a free DDR soft pad. most of the new releases of DDR games in the US come with a free DDR pad....so this shouldn't be any different right? well my friend says he got a fairly good non-slip soft pad when he got DDR max2, so do you think they'll put it out with DDR extreme too? i don't care what kind of soft pad it is as long as its got a non-slip bottom. jus for friends....my metal pad rules so i have no need for a soft....jus for my friends...... |

has anyone taken out the bottem of a soft DDR pad before? i've had mine (which is similar to this one: http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=237&products_id=491&). I want to cut mine open to replace the bottem foam with wood or something, but i'm wondering if the sensors are attatched to the top part, or the foam bottem part? Because if they're connected to the bottem, i can't cut out eh foam without damaging them. |

Err... I don't think you have to cut the bottom of the ddr pad if you want to mount the pad to wooden board. They sensors aren't attached to the bottom but you shouldn't have to tamper with it. In this version of the chair mod the pad was taped onto the board with the bottom still intact. I'd take a look at the chair mod to see if thats want you wanted to do. |

well, I have a "Mad Catz" brand "beat pad". I bought it at a pretty good price, about 20 bucks, but ever since I got serious about playing, one of my pads, started malfunctioning on me, it was the left arrow, so now I'm just stuck to using one pad. Now my goal, for this summer is to get a Red Octane Dense Foam Pad. _________________

RedOctane $99
BuyNShop $48
Ebay - vortzgames x2 $39
All these pads have dense/hard foam and are of pretty similar quality. |

i'd go with the BNS DX if i were you. not expensive like the 99 dollar red octane soft pad (you can get a metal pad with that kind of cash!!) yet very well built. i can't tell you how long it'll last but i can promise you that it won't die out on you in weeks or mayb months. of course you can never tell..... |

According to Vortz...
The Vortz pads (available both on eBay from user VortzGame and on http://www.vortz.com) come from the same manufacturer as the RO Ignitions and the MYMYBox pads. He also said "BNS pads don't even compare" suggesting that BNS pads are manufactured elsewhere; I don't know what to make of his comment about the quality of the BNS pads. |
