Is it just me or does it seem like it would be a daunting and/or inconcievably expensive feat to get really good without playing DDR at home. E19.gif

Did anyone get good before owning the home versions, or before they came out?

thats crazy man(toast)! How much did you spent to attain that kind of ridiculous skill without ever practicing at home...?

Then again people learn this game at wildly different speeds. Perhaps that was all done in a week or two of casual play. laugh.gif

anyway, congrats for being bad a$$!

I've been playing 1-2 times a week for almost a year and a half. I spent much more money when I was first learning than now, but yeah. Alot of people I know don't have home versions.

I'm not exactly good but Ive never had home version. At most I have stepmania. now I have home version and no working pad. I think it's better to play pure arcade, when you play at home you start to think youre better than you are, it's sad really.

For some reason, I noticed the people that do extremely well at home pads don't do quite as well as in the arcade. That's unless they are consistant. I don't play much on my home pad, mostly because I'm looking down at the tv while playing. I use stepmania to kind've "listen" for the steps. There's always a cue when to step. Xenon... nuff said. Also see Vanity Angel. These songs are nuts when it comes to weird steps unless the machine has the sound balanced perfectly. Too bad the arcades don't have headphone jacks. riiight.gif;

I never play at home but I'm nailing some tougher songs and grabbing up those AA's fast now. Been playing casualy for almost 3 years and I'm starting to think I can nab some tounaments. I'll be around. peace izzout yo.

I've started playing on the DDR circuit in the arcades back in April of 1999. But I can never be as good as The Toastmater. He has leet skills! He probably has gone to more DDR locations than I have ever gone to in my lifetime. At least he's got 120 AAAs on Heavy, even though I'veonly gone to 200+ DDR ARCADE LOCATIONS!
Back to the topic, I've learned more on the arcades than at home whether it was on computers or on home game systems. I've been an arcade addict since 1978! Way before Pac-Man or even DDR ever came into the picture. Is that a trip or what? Please reply, over! Thanks!

Wow, what an old fart. E10.gif just kidding man. Yeah, I think arcades are better because you have to get used to the atmosphere of constantly being watched. At home, ddr'ing in your underwear in front of you dog doesn't count. Get down to the arcades and beef it up. Don't be afraid to look stupid. I do it everyday (not by choice.) Laterz!

Me.

I have a few AAAs and I am lucky to live 5 mins away from an arcade plus the arcade has all kinds of token specials so it saves me money.

I have the home versions but I always play them with a controller . I don't own any kind of pad but theres no point when the arcade is 5 mins away

I've never played on a home pad except for when my buddy Kitty wanted me to try a heavy song on it and almost died. I play 5 to 6 times a week at the arcade for at least 3 hours each session. It does get expensive though. I've been playing for a little over 6 months and check the sig for my heavy stats. I don't think I'm horrible at the game but I'm certainly not "good" yet. I'm done now E1.gif

Simple, he got used to the arcade right off the bat! It really helps when you just start playing on an arcade. The transition from playing home versions, to an arcade can mess up your arcade play. Home versions perfect windows are bigger than the arcades. Once you learn the timing on an arcade off the bat, your bound to have an amazing PA (as toast does)

I've mostly learned in the arcade as well (although not quite as fast as Toast <3)...and i've probably played at every location between southern oregon and seattle on the I-5 corridor except for narrows <3

I had the home version for awhile but I only played on controller (still do sometimes if I get bored). The pad I used to have slid all the way across the room everytime I tried to play on it, so I only play in arcade. I'm not fond of playing at home because the perfect window is about 02380283 times bigger than the arcade. And it's timed a bit different, too.

I'd rather go to the arcade for the fun of meeting new people/ just hanging out. Sometimes I just go to hang out with friends and don't even play DDR. (Plus, my house is boring and my dad's always watching TV so it wouldn't work.)

Well, back when "good" was being able to pass Paranoia 180 Maniac, I got "good" on nothing but arcade play. E10.gif

(Of course, there was no home version of DDR out at the time.)

Immmpppressive. Nah really, im impressed hahaha. A lot of you had the dedication required to become a skilled ddr player just at the arcade.

I personally don't notice that much of a disconnect between my home and arcade skills although ive only played 3 or 4 times at the arcade I could play at pretty much the same level. I think a lot of it has to do with how nervous you get performing while other people watch.
