It seems you are challenging yourself very highly. Not many will freestyle on the more difficult levels because it's harder to make any moves look good. I suggest sticking to Light to freestyle until you get used to the arrow placement.

Not many people got to see it, but for whomever is interested, this is a freestyle on Heavy, he was doing R3 and won first place. Scary/strange thing is, he did it impromptu. I thought it was alright for a Heavy FS.

Heh, personally I thought it looked silly with him jogging in place. Looks like it would've been so much better looking had he done it on Light.

That video was okay IMHO. It woulda look better on light considering you do so much in between those gaps of arrows. It looks impressive if you can come up with a freestyle on heavy but who wants to memorize 300+ arrows.

Okay, now that I've gotten that blatant Postwhoring out of the way...

I'm one of the (fabled?) Improv FS'ers on Standard/Heavy, and I've gotta get more under my belt. My biggest strength right now is my spins...I can basically spin whenever I want to. I can also do slides & "running man"s. One thing I wanna improve on is my handplants/kneedrops...I can do 'em, but whenever I do it looks really contrived and more often than not stupid. Anyone have some ideas? Like combining a HP/KD with something else?

I downloaded that video up there. And as impressive as it was, it could have been better on light. Or Heavy little.

If this was the year 2000, I'd be saying that's great. But the things the A-Team did years ago aren't showing to be all the impressive anymore. You need to be innovative.

Just a funny newb question, but does talking on your phone with your friend, holding your cat in your arms, or shaking your butt to a song like rythem and police count as freestyling? riiight.gif

As much of a "newb" you are, I think you can answer that yourself.

This might sound a bit common sense. But those who look like they're having fun on the machine during their routine, regardless of a few parts of it that could be better, are the best freestylers. If it looks like you're trying too hard. Then it probably won't look all that exciting.

Fluid and well executed dance STYLE > badly executed dance moves

It's all a matter of making up in one category for what you lack in the other.

If you're really bad at one, then see if you can get really good at its opposite. If you can implement both. Then hot damn, you've impressed me.

E1.gif Thanks guys for playing along with my question. I just like to have fun when I play ddr. I can also finally do max 300 on basic and get a B without too much effort. I am working on making it look like I am actually doing a dance instead of just pressing arrows and apparently I do a pretty good job of it. Wish there were more ddr players here to talk with.

Thanks

P.S. Phrek, I have seen you in a couple of videos, you make my friend Zack look like a newb.

Heres my freestyling tips. I might suck but I have watched tons of vids and a few live players do it.

Most important thing is to be relaxed. Make sure you play or see step charts for several modes/edits before you pic the song. Try making up routine on the spot. Just get a camera and start recording. This way if you screw up in a rehersed routine you can pull something off. It should also get your mind focusserd so you get some ideas. Look at other players to see their style but have your own. Something new is always more impressive than using a modified version of another routine. Start by playing a song and moving your whole body than do simple drops pauses with the music whatever helps you get the song. USe the whole pad even if your on singles if the routine is impressive people wont be watching the arrows.

Most important thing is to actually get out and do it. Invite friends over to your house and show the routine. Take a song from your computer and just make something up in your room. Anything but make sure you do it for people. A non player audiance may be impressed by more simple moves. So who cares if your new.

Any tips for -being- more "innovative"?

I've recently overcome the same problem as you where you suddenly come to a "plateau" on your skill of freestyling. Innovation is a difficult thing to undertake. One thing you can try is develop various styles of dancing according to the type of song you play. For instance if you're playing an R&B song, you might want to c-walk, whereas if you're playing a song that's more techno/trance, you might want to liquid rave. This way you can change things up so your dancing never seems old. Another advantage to having more than one dance style is that you can also interchange the two into one style in itself. As far as learning new moves, think of some dance moves you've done outside of DDR and figure out how you can apply them to the game. When you play, try to visualize the arrow patterns as dance moves rather than targets on the pad that need to be hit. The possibilities are endless, so make it cool, look good, and have fun. Hope this was helpful.

best cwalk routine I've seen is Supply - After the Game of Love. Other than that it's lame.
