I don't exactly know the brand of my metal pad. Let's just say it's almost a complete resemblance to the arcade pads, bar and all. I gotta agree that all pads, metal or even ceramic, are breakable. I kinda messed up the down arrow once (the wire to the sensor split, had to get it sewed back on). |

hah, i knew it.
Quote: | However, it's impossible IMO to claim ANY home pad as "better than the arcade". |
course its impossible cuz u never played on a cf now have you. i find it impossible to say something is not better if one has never actually tried that something.
Quote: | As for options, most people (including myself) are more cost-conscientious and I would rather buy a BNS pad rather then pay the money upfront for a CF pad considering everything else that my job pays for |
yes, i was cost conscientious as im a student and dont have a lot of money, or parents giving me money, so i was skeptical to blow 300 on a ddr pad. but i have watched people actually BREAK other pads just by playing, like the cheap plastic over the arrows would crack, and render the pad useless. you cant break a cf. take a sledge to it, still wont break.
anyways zero, remember this. you get what you pay for. if in any way you can scrounge up enough money to get a cf, do yourself a favor and buy it. any home ddr player owes it to his or herself. it really is worth it. _________________

No its not a Mymybox its an old verson of a cg (cyphergames) pad. if your going for one of them id say go for either a bns (ones with X & O) or go with a new verson of a cg pad like the ones off of ebay with poly carb arrows, or if you want a bns which is also good which i know from experence, heres the link http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3082536231&category=21185 as you may not know polycarb arrows crack less then a pad with acrlic arrows, so go either with a bns or cg pad. i personally prefer cg to bns but cg and bns are pritty much the same if you do plan on geting a cg get the one off of ebay it comes with a controll box unlike the cg that u were looking at _________________

Are Cobalt Flux pads made of the same materials as an arcade platform?
-No.
The arcade is the perfect place, way and method to play DDR.
You see, that's my opinion. However considering that the equipment in the arcade is above anything you can buy for a home console, it doesn't matter if it's an opinion but moreso that it's a fact. If Cobalt Flux pads were made with arcade components, then they'd be perfect like the arcade.
They're not...so they're not. Period.

Congratulations on spending $300 on a Cobalt Flux pad that you're happy with.
I just spent 1/3 of that on a BNS metal pad that I'm happy with.
Isn't that all that's important?
"My pad r0x0rZ and yourZ doesn't!" is what you're acting like.

I think I'd rather go buy another BNS pad for 1/3 less, which would be BNS pad #2 that I'm happy with.
I've said it plenty of times already ~
(aimed at everyone else in this thread especially those wanting to buy a good metal pad)
A BNS metal pad is a good investment if you want a decent pad at a decent price and are willing to sheet metal mod it and ever work on it if it becomes necessary in the future. No one will ever be able to tell you with a definitive answer whether or not YOUR metal pad will break, only time will tell. Some people claim theirs broke and some say they've had theirs for years. Hell, people claim that their soft pads break after one week; I've had mine on wood+plastic for over 4 years and they've never broken, not yet, not once. Don't think that you ab-so-lutely have to buy a CF pad to enjoy DDR at home because that's a bunch of crap. Spend what you can on what you choose and be happy with your purchase. That's all that matters - not whether your mat is shinier or bigger or your bank account took a bigger hit than Timmy down the street.

In another thread, I wrote: | For some people, Cobalt Flux'es are NOT the best out there. People who don't have the same type of pad presence get thrown off because CF's are completely flat. They can't find their footing on raised part of the pad because there isn't one. |

cfs are not completely flat. the section in the middle is raised. it is very easy, even wearing shoes, to keep your footing squarely on the pad without getting off in any way. _________________

Hey Raptor Man, do you work for CF or something? I'm sure that CFs are awesome and everything... I mean, jesus, they ran it over with an SUV!
But come on, how exactly are CF's better than any other pad. Do they use a different alloy of steel? Do they use deluxe screws and a special polycarbonate plastic that was codeveloped by NASA and the CIA?
Seriously, has anyone with a CF taken it apart to discover the magic ingredient, or is it just brand loyalty?
Well, I'm about one day away from recieving my first metal pads. Two BNS pads from Ebay.
Also a quick question to people who have these or similar (Mymybox etc.) metal pads.... Once you've done the sheet metal mod, and maybe resoldered a couple of wires, how much other maintenance have you had to do to these pads? How long has your metal pad lasted? |

no, im no emplyee of cf, juz a happy customer. i have used other metal pads in the past with no success, and finally got a cf, and have never been happier. the reason they are so durable is that they are not hollow for the wiring like all the other pads. cfs are actually only about an inch and a half thick, but weigh around 35 pounds still. the lexan panels are almost indestructable, so you never have to worry about your arrows cracking. its like super hard bendable plastic. running over a cf with an suv is like running over a square piece of 1.5 inch sheet metal. nothing will happen to it to affect it in any way. i hate it how people cant imagine how a cf can be so good, then when they play it all of a sudden are like, wow, maybe this guy was right.. _________________

A question about the durability of metal pads... I'm a new to the forums and started reading this thread to try to figure out if the BNS metal pad was worth getting. About 20 pages in or so, someone posted saying something to the effect of "I weigh 160 lbs and dance on Heavy so I'd break anything except the CF or custom pads."
I weigh a bit over 220 lbs and currently dance on Standard, although I hope to move on to Heavy eventually. Although the BNS pad says they have "Poly Carbonated Panels... that can stand the toughest foot steps," the aforementioned post made me worry about the durability of metal pads. Would a non-CF, non-custom metal pad likely survive for any length of time with me using it or should I stick to soft pads?
Also, what's the Sheet Metal modification to BNS pads? What page could I find more information on what it is? (while building a custom pad is a bit too ambitious for my tastes, if it's anything on the order of complexity of the plywood mods to soft pads, which I already have done with my el-cheapo pads, I'd consider it) |

Although I haven't done it yet, the sheet metal mod looks extremely easy to do. It basically involves obtaining sheet metal, cutting it into squares using tin snips, unscrewing the arrows on the pad, and duct taping it to the back side of the arrows. http://www.rufus3.com/ddr/mmb.html This link will take you to a much more in depth (pictures included) way of doing this mod.
Tomorrow I get my BNS pads and I'll be sure to mod them right away. |

Well, I orderd a metal pad from ebay a few days ago, and it arrived today.
What I ordered
What I received
As you can see, what I received is nothing like what I orderd, I was expecting a BNS pad (because other people on these forums had bought the same thing from the same person and got BNS pads) but the pad I received seems very cheap and weak.
I sent an e-mail to the seller saying that I have received a product that was not like what was advertised for and I would like to trade it in for the correct product(if a mistake was made) or return it.
Someone please tell me if I'm completely wrong about this. Did I do the right thing? |

Hey VonTure, now you've got me worried, because I bought two of the exact same pads. Do they work okay? Was there a control box with the pad? Does it feel sturdy? That pad doesn't look too bad though, if it works. BTW, how much does it weigh... The auction on Ebay says it weighs about 38 pounds, but according to my FedEX statement, it says that it only weighs 25 pounds.... You could probably return them for false advertising. As for me, I'll keep them if they don't seem too crappy. |

Well..seeing as this is the metal pad discussion...ill ask this here(forgive me if someone already asked this, but i really dont feel like reading 48 pages just to see if its been asked).
I ordered a cobalt flux dance pad a little over a week ago(it should be arriving soon hopefully). So....what i was wondering is if i should do the carpet mod on it right when i get it(my whole house has carpet except the garage and kitchen)? See, it has the warranty on it, and im not sure if i should void it...im pretty sure the carpet mod voids the warranty. The only other option i have is to play it in the garage for the six months and then when thats over carpet mod it then and then i could play it in my room. Any input is appreciated. |

Yea, I think that it is only 25 pounds... I have not tried it yet because of the possibility that I wouldn't be able to send it back. It really doesn't seem like a very good pad because the arrows are made of flimsy plastic and not held in very well. Yes, it does come with the control box. You'll have to decide when you get yours, if the one that I got is the one that your going to get too. |

Ok, I got the exact same one as you did VonTure, and although I don't like the fact that there are just four big washer-looking metal discs instead of the triangle brackets, it seems like a damn good pad for the $80 + shipping I spent. I hooked it up to my xbox, and it works like a charm. I think I'm going to keep it and mod it this weekend. |

Oh my... that picture of the item you received look like these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3084310562&category=21185
I could careless about the looks, but how are the other features? Are the buttons poly carbonate? or acrylic plastic? Does it light up like the one advertise on ebay link? I hope they aren't acrylic cause thats what I tried to avoid when getting a metal pad. I do see it does have the metal frame around it thank god. Mine pad from same dealer will be arriving in next week, and I doubt I'll be sending it back if it ends up being like yours. Is there a way to replace the acrylic buttons with polycarbonate or stronger material?, see that the acrylic ones aren't as durable...and the only thing keeping it from being the one advertise on the site (if buttons were not carbonate).
Has anyone else bought a metal pad from that dealer and end up with similar if not the same type of item as vonture? 25 pds someone says?... What other metal pads weighs that much? Because doesn't the typical metal pad advertise on ebay 30+ pds? |

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the arrows are polycarbonate. I'm about 280lbs, and I was stomping (with shoes) on this pad last night, and the plastic seems very strong. And it does have little LED lights around the four main arrows, which is not that cool, but they are there and they do work.
Actually I forgot about the lights until I plugged it in started playing. |

Hey, does anyone know where I can get a 9-pin serial to PS2 adapter for a mymybox metal pad from? I recntley broke mine by accidently holding down the cable with my foot while lifting the pad. And yes, I've tried repairing it. I even got a new 9-pin serial and resoldered to no affect :( |

Can someone please post the sheet metal mod??
I've looked thru the swamp of the 48ish pages and I can't find it...
And maybe this is a stupid question, but: which mod is better the mod on the first page by ps2freak or the sheet metal mod for my BNS pad?? |
