i shoulda saved the 30 bucks i spent playin ddr last weekend at the mall and bought a pad. im so retarded. im juss going to buy the standard, thin, crappy-buttocks pad they sell at my. theyre gonna set me back about 20 a piece. plus i need to buy the game. so.. today i went and applied for a job. for the sole purpose of getting ddr. hehe. i love this game!! and im going to mod the pads. hopefully theyll last me a bit. |

I saw this pad on ebay and was wondering if anyone knows anything about this thing. It seems similar to the ignition 2.0 pads (with the dense foam and all), but they're some no name brand.

How do they compare with any of the others that go for around $30 a pair? Am I better off going with the cheapest around and modding them?
Thanks |

i ordered 2 of the 1.0's of that kind from cyphergames for 25$ a piece. those are 2.0 deluxe's and from what i hear they are good pads. you could try to mod one of them if you want. im eagerly waiting until my pads come in on friday, so ill know then for sure if they are good pads. Cheers mate |

Quote: | I know the solution. If you buy a new 3rd party pad for cheap and do the plywood mod it will work just like the ones in the arcade. you can slide well on it, and it lasts longer. the mod website is http://www.ddrfreak.com/library/faqs-modding.php
thats it |
this is absolutely correct. it wont be just like the arcade, but wil be as close as u can get without getting a hard pad. i had my 3rd party modded soft pad for about half a year with very few, if any, problems. that mod website is what i used when i first bought ddr and my pad. after 6 months of hard playing, and after finding it increasingly difficult to play heavy on a soft pad, i got a cf, and couldnt be happier.
o yea, in response to a previous post, i just used some plywood i got at lowes. _________________

I modded a sh*tty madcatz pad yesterday. with plywood + hardwood floor covering + duct tape. Works great, no slipping, pad doesnt move around, feels prett good.
one problem though.
I didnt use any sort of foam padding, and I am playing without shoes. MY FEET HURT! after 1 day. I am sure that first time/no shoe play has some soreness involved, but do you guys think that it will be fine stomping on plywood without shoes, after a little more practice? |

From the picture, it looks like the ones here: http://www.cyphergames.com/50501054b.html
or
http://www.levelsix.com/detail.aspx?ID=20
The item advertised on that ebay page has the similar designs as both these websites but top surface of the ebay pad seem to resemble the cloth type surface of levelsix. That type doesn't stick to your feet but doesn't seem as durable as plastic type as cypher.
I think the key feature you'd want in an ignition pad is the hard foam inserts. The ebay pad advertises an ultra dense insert... I'm not too sure if that the same as hard foam or maybe the dense foam (which I think sux) sold both here:
http://www.levelsix.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=13
After having an hard insert, a dense insert is way to soft and the buttons don't seem as responsive. So I would verify if those are "hard inserts" like the ones in the link.
The prices for ignition pads on ebay are good buys for softpads, just have to take note of the type of ignition pad or specifically the type of insert. Ignition pads are good right out of the box w/o modding. They do break down, but you only spent $30+ rather than $40-$50 name brand for one ignition pad.
I bought an item off that dealer, and I got what was advertised, so I doubt the dealer would rip you off with a totally different pad. But I'd verify if the insert is hard foam rather than dense ones.
If anyone is wondering, I bought these pads off of ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3083640145&category=21185
Exact DDRNation pad made by BuynShop (seems just like DX-Xtreme sold for $50) but has the crappy foam insert. I replaced the insert with the broken DX I had. You can also buy hard insert from link above at levelsix.com for $10.
I love EBay! |

Plastic surfaces so own the "other surfaces" since they'll never rip. _________________

|
|
Greetings Everyone,
Just another DDR noob with a few questions for those much more wiser than I. After purchasing Ultramix and a pad the other day my good friend and hi had some fun breaking in the game. But it was soon obvious that some modding was needed, bunching was a major problem. So here I am wishing to be bleesed and enlightened.
1. What of all the mods out there are considered the best soft pad mods? That way I know all of my modding options.
2. Is there a such thing as a mobile mod, I know that sounds a bit odd. But between the slick floors at work, home, and my friends apartment it will be traveling a bit.
3. If I were to add some spray paint to the plywood of a mod, does anyone see the paint affecting the pad if I lay it bare on the paint.
4. I saw on Post One that someone had just used velcro and attached it to a piece of plywood. How functional is it overall, the others I could see being more secure but I am curious about this.
5.What is the average life of a pad with and without a mod?
6. I noticed on the plywood mods that there wasn't much under the pad for foot padding. Is there any forseeable problems with doing this?
I think that is all for now, thanks again.

modding a soft pad is really just many mods, that all do the same thing. Mounting the soft pad onto wood, and covering in with plastic

you could hinge the wood on bottom, so it folds in half or quarters, but this would require much more effort, if you can drag around a 36X36 piece of wood, in a trunk, or truck, than you'll be fine.
Quote: | 3. If I were to add some spray paint to the plywood of a mod, does anyone see the paint affecting the pad if I lay it bare on the paint. |
well, why would you want to paint the wood, that a pad goes on top of? no one will ever see the paint. if you wanted to, it wouldnt hurt anything, unless the paint just flakes off, then you might have a mess.
Quote: | 4. I saw on Post One that someone had just used velcro and attached it to a piece of plywood. How functional is it overall, the others I could see being more secure but I am curious about this. |
velcro seemed a little light to me. I used heavy duty mounting tape. made 3 horizontal strips, 2 diagonal, and 1 verticle. my pad wont budge off that wood.
Quote: | 5.What is the average life of a pad with and without a mod? |
depends on the pad you use, depends on how hard you stomp, etc.
Quote: | 6. I noticed on the plywood mods that there wasn't much under the pad for foot padding. Is there any forseeable problems with doing this? |
I started playing barefoot, now my feet hurt a LOT. so I just wear shoes now, but if I did it again, I would try to use some small foam padding, so barefoot is an option. |

I've been buying foam pads off ebay, and now that I'm playing on Heavy mode, I seem to be killing them way too quickly. I'm wondering if I should forget these cheaper pads and go with Red Octane's. Are their pads any more durable, or would I just be paying extra for the brand name?
(and in case anyone's tempted to suggest that a good metal pad would be more cost effective in the long run, I've already tried that route and decided that the noise factor wasn't acceptable in an apartment setting) |

These pads are only good if you mod them (info about modding on first page of this topic). If you have some extra cash to spend, I would avoid this type of softpad and go for an ignition pad - foam insert inside (selling as cheap as $30 for two on ebay). Do pay attention to the type of foam insert in the ignition pads. |
