Does anyone have any good DDR-related weight loss stories? I've just started using DDR as a way to augment my regular gym workouts and would love some encouragement and maybe some suggestions for doing so without having to play for 3+ hours a day (I just don't have the time).

Lulu, since you said you wanted to lose weight, I figured what BETTER time to arbitrarily post my mini-schpiel that I post on ALL the "DDR and Weight Loss" topics!!

/me happily copy-pastes.

Each of these elements comes into play with weight loss.

One. Your weight now, relative to your frame size and height. If you currently are underweight, then you're not going to lose weight as easily. If you're extremely (unhealthily) underweight, DDR is liable to cause you to *gain* weight. If you're an average weight, DDR may make you lose or gain, depending on other factors. If you're overweight, DDR may help you lose, but at the same time, other elements of your lifestyle are gonna come into play.

Keep in mind most of the people who lose weight off of DDR start off quite overweight-- the average/underweight person is much less likely to have dramatic weightloss with DDR, and may even gain.

Two. Your diet. What you eat now. What you eat while you're trying to lose weight. Diet is vitally important in relation to exercise-- if you DDR an hour a day, but eat totally horrible food, you're liable to not lose, or even gain, weight. At the same time, following unhealthy diets can make you lethargic, and make you not have enough energy to even do cardio. Also, it's important to note that if you change back to eating the Standard American Diet after your weight loss attempt, you're liable to gain most if not all of what you lost back.

Speaking of the standard American diet, if you're trying to lose weight, you may want to look at what you're eating. The food guide pyramid is a nice idea, but hardly anyone follows it-- and in fact, there are major flaws to it. The numbers of servings are accurate for sure, but they're inequal-- you should learn what a serving of fruit is, a serving of grains is, a serving of meat is. Having a snack every day is fine, but realize that a serving of fats/oils/sweets is around 2 ounces of chips or pretzels, and your average bag of cheetos is SEVERAL servings.

Americans generally get too much protein, too many grains, too many fats and sweets, and not enough fruits and veggies. So you might wanna evaluate your diet. You don't have to become vegetarian to be eating better-- simply watching your portion sizes and grabbing an apple instead of poptarts when you're on the run goes a long, long way.

Three. Water. You *will not* lose anything but water weight unless you keep completely hydrated. Your body needs water to break down fats, and fat loss or fat being replaced by muscle is what you're going for, right? You don't just wanna be dehydrated.

Four. Your current workout. If you already do cardio for the same amount of time you're planning to do DDR, you have changed basically nothing. In fact, I've heard of a bunch of people who've gained off of DDR-- I can't say that hanging out at arcades really breeds good eating habits, for sure.

lost about 8 Kg since I started playing but well... I didn't want to lol.

I just wanted to say that IMO you shouldn't play DDR to lose weight, because it could become boring... Just play to have fun and improve your skills, then you'll want to play more and more, pass harder and harder songs and eventually you'll lose weight.

Anyway, toasterchick is right, DDR or sport can help you to lose weight, but what you need first is a better diet (don't drink coke after playing DDR or you'll gain weight instead lol).

I've been playing for about 8 months now, and my weight has stayed pretty constant. Now, I started playing DDR about the same time I started grad school, and I imagine if I would have gained a bit of weight if I hadn't been playing. Of course, there's no way to tell.

One change I have noticed is vastly increased muscle tone in my legs. It's a welcome change.

Since I quit smoking, I have gained 20 lbs in 2 months. so I ordered myself a DDR pad. I really am lacking a good cardio excersize, and do a decent amout of weight lifting (nothing serious, just some upper body). I hope to loose some weight, or at least get in good shape. I am pretty obsessed with DDR now, so hopefully that will continue when I use the pad, and go from hero to zero, as far as skill is concerned, lol.
