Memorizing a song is not cheating. You played it enough and took the time to memorize it. The only thing is you can't really improve your skills with a memorized song cause you already know it and like you said, don't need to react to the arrows.
But no, it's not cheating ^_~ |

Nah, it's not cheating. Say for instance, you can only play Max 1 and Max 2 on PS2 (due to no machines near you), of course you're going to memorize the songs...because you're playing them nonstop! _________________

How are you supposed to avoid memorizing songs? Play them once and never again? |

Alright, this is just my personal opinion. Please don't be biest against me. I DEFINATELY believe that memorizing a song is cheating. Not only is it cheating to other players, but you're cheating yourself.
For those who have found a song they like, and have played it so many times that you can't help but remember the steps to the beat, more power to ya. Those who purposely play a song so many times that it drives the worker at the Arcade (or where ever you might be) insane from hearing the same song, over, and over, and over again... I hate you.
I use to be a manager of an Arcade. Before that, I was an avid DDR player. That's how I got my job. DDR was new to the town, and I was about the only one around that could play Heavy's. It was on an Extreme machine and all I have to say is "Butterfly" and "End of the Century"! You have no idea of how many flippin' times I had to hear those songs!!! Two guys for instance (for the sake of not embarressing them, let's just call them Diarrea and Poo), well... Diarrea and Poo would play those songs for LITERALLY hours! Being they were paying customers I wouldn't say anything, but as the tried to boost up to Standard... they just couldn't! They memorized it to the point of not forgetting the Light steps! This I find to be a perfect example of "Cheating Yourself".
Now I do believe, to a point, of memorizing for Free Style. You've gotta make it look good. One thing of making it look good is confidence. You can't be up there looking like you don't know what the heck you're doing and expect it to look good. I'll be the first to admit when I memorize a song though. A lot of people will look at you in awe and ask "How did you get so good" and I'll just tell 'em the truth. "I've played this song to death so I know it by heart".
As for cheating others, I come to "Tournament Play". For instance there are times where at the Arcade there would be a Tournament. (Again, for the sake of embarressment, let's call this person "Creepy Child".) Creepy Child was one of the few Heavy players this town had ever seen. Well, he would one... take the the game too seriously! Making it very unfun for other players. The biggest thing was that when it came for tournament play, every single frickin' song he'd (or she'd) get was frickin' memorized! He'd brag about it... laugh insanely loud. A huge issue was his attitude but another factor was his memorization of the songs. After two tournaments, he was banned by me (as then mangager) and all other participants of the tourneys to come.
Those were just a few examples at to why I feel memorizing DDR songs are a cheat. If you're getting to the point of memorizing a song but you still like to play it... SHUFFLE it! That's what it's there for! Another example is of another person that I will call "Stinky". Stinky is a Heavy player. About a 8-9 foot difficulty. He would brag about how good he was and his cocky attitude was beginning to drive me nuts. Considering he would want to play with other people and then pick the songs before the other player would even have a chance to see the title (I HATE THAT!). Anyway, finally I did the same back to him. I picked an easier song, "Let's Groove". A 6 Foot Heavy. We were both on Shuffle since that's about the way I always do it and I just wanted to see how good he actually was at DDR. Well he usually got A's on this song... yeah, well... He didn't even pass. Again, him just "Cheating Himself".
Lemme know what you people think. I think that this will put a new light on those who haven't thought to Memorizing DDR songs as a cheat. I noticed that all of you that posted before me, didn't find it to be. That being the case, I just had to post my opinion. _________________

I fail to see how memorizing instantly improves your timing and reaction time.
Shampoo, I think you're confused. You're equating people that whore the same songs over and over again with real memorization. And even then, you did not once show how it's "cheating". It's ridiculous. It's like saying that people who practice and work hard at something are cheating. You whole argument reeks of bitterness and jealousy, seeing as you took the time to explain how awesome you were in your area until someone better came along.
I hope this doesn't get me points I really just hate it when people try to tell other people how to enjoy an arcade game, of all things. _________________

stealthing or like you like to call it memorizing is the furthest thing from cheating ever. It not only adds an extra difficulty to the game but it adds more fun to it since playing the same songs over and over can get tiring for some people.
Think of it this way, when you stealth a song what are you doing when youre playing it? Youre searching your mind for what note comes next and where. When youre not on stealth what are you doing? Youre searching the screen for what note comes next and where. There is no advantage to stealthing a song PA wise if your timing is not already good. Also if you didnt play songs over and over and learn at least a little of how the patterns go you wouldnt be able to AAA the song. I dont care who you are, im sure ill get plenty of "oh i can do that" 's but if you play a song on heavy that youve never played before thats anywhere near a little difficult youre not AAAing first chance because you dont know how to get setup for the song, how the beat goes, which notes come where, etc. etc. |

I would wager that almost everyone who's been playing for a while has memorized at least portions of songs. Not necessarily for stealthing purposes (which is a beast on it's own and is quite impressive to me), but just because a certain section of a song may be difficult, so naturally you'd want to know how it goes, and try to figure out the easiest way to do it. For freestyling purposes, would you rather see a freestyler who has to look at the screen every 5 seconds, or one that can turn, face the audience, and let loose with their best moves because they've memorized the steps. _________________

Agreed on Stealthing. Yeah... that's pretty cool, though it does pretty much prove the fact that you've memorized the song.
Okay, APD missed my point entirely. This is a post about "Is memorizing a song cheating". It has nothing to do with bitterness or such. It just has to do with what I've seen over the time of playing DDR. What I've witnessed from other people and the opinion I've heard from others and what I've had as an opinion on my own. Do I again have to say "Alright, this is just my personal opinion. Please don't be biest against me." Gees-oh-Petes! I guess Memorizing a DDR song is just one of those topics you should never cover. Like Religion and Politics. |

I don't think memorizing a song is cheating. I'm going to respond to Shampoo's arguments, but not in an inflammatory way - this doesn't need to become a flamewar .

Yeah, that really does suck for the arcade manager, and I understand how annoyed you would be. However, it *is* their money, and DDR is a game, after all. If they enjoy playing the same song s over and over again, then that doesn't mean they don't deserve to play that way. They should be able to play however they want (as long as it doesn't harm the machines or anything like that).

How would he make it unfun? By being mean/rude to the other players, or by memorizing the songs?

Did you ban him primarily because he memorized songs, or because of his behavior? You mention both, but I'm not sure what the reason was. If it's the latter, than you probably should have talked to him first, and if he continued acting that way after repeating warnings, then it was definitely at your discretion to ban him. If it was because he memorized songs, well, that wasn't right. The way a tournament is set up, if a player has memorized songs and can AAA them consistently, then you need to allow mods and allow shuffle to be an option. There, problem solved. If he didn't get perfect scores every time, then players can beat him by getting a better score. Banning a player because he wins consistently, for whatever reason, is wrong, IMHO.
Quote: | Those were just a few examples at to why I feel memorizing DDR songs are a cheat. If you're getting to the point of memorizing a song but you still like to play it... SHUFFLE it! |
What if they enjoy playing the memorized steps? What if they don't want to shuffle it? Again, DDR is a game. There is no monopoly on the "right" way to have fun. If a player enjoys memorizing songs and doing only that - it's their 75 cents (or 50 cents, or a dollar, or whatever). They don't "have" to challenge themselves or ever get better. It only matters what's fun for the player. As long as the player enjoys it, he/she isn't cheating him/herself.
I think there seem to be two issues here. Memorizing songs, and attitude. I can understand your unhappiness and anger because of some players' attitudes, and that's legitimate. However, a player should be able to do whatever is fun for him or her. It's silly to say that a player shouldn't memorize songs - that's the same thing as saying using mods is cheating. But then again, that's been debated over and over again as well. |
