Hello fellow DDR's. I'm a 60+ female DDRFreak.
I first saw a DDR in Sydney, Australia three years ago. It was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen.... we were heading to the theatre and passed the video arcade, where these fantastic young people were dancing up a storm. As an official Mom and Grandmom, I've often thought 'video arcades' were a waste of time.... especially when there were more 'important' things to be done.... but this was different. I was transfixed and after watching for an hour, I talked a young girl into dancing along side so I could try. My husband quickly hid behind a post just in case I was carted away for foolish behavior.
I left there wanting a 'dance machine'.
There are no DDR machines within 90 miles of me, so I would try it again when I had the chance - 8 or 10 times over the next few years. Last fall I happened to notice two people dancing in front of a TV on a sitcom and realized, there was a way to have a dance machine. PS2, Ignition Pad2 and 3 DDR games later, I'm having a ball. First thing in the morning. Last thing at night. The music just won't leave my head, and before I know it.... I'm back at it again.
I'm looking forward to trying my improving skills in the 'real world'. I'll never be the fantastic dancer some of you younger ones will be, but I'm having just as much fun. Don't ever let anyone tell you that you are too old to do something. You only are.... if you think you are. |

WOW. Now THAT is a great story. I think that's one of the best I've heard on here ever.

I suggest you take a step back from the thread and walk away, because you WAY overreacted over a single improper term. You've lived for 26 years and you still haven't learned to control your temper, it seems. _________________

I look at this thread and to my amazement I see a Myraid of people who play this game. Some more than others, but all enough to actually go and buy the game and post on here. Perhaps Konami has suceeded at creating a game for the people, so to speak, in spite of my initail impression that the game would only appeal to Otaku teenagers. It is truly excellent to see.
(Btw, I am a 20 year old "kid," heh.) _________________

Hi Molson!
You must have seen DDR in the same place I saw it for the first time - walking past one of the arcades on George St. in downtown Sydney! Right next door to the movie theater, if I remember correctly. Talk about a small world - especially how far that is from the Midwest US!!

Hi Woody,
I'm not sure it was the same place. If I had a map of Sydney I would tell you instantly. The theatres were across from the arcade. We were staying near the Powerhouse Museum and took a taxi. If/when I'm back there, I go could in an instant, but just don't remember the street name now.
Also tried DDR at various arcades in Las Vegas and last summer at a 'gaming palace' in Phoenix.
I'm still learning all of the 'secrets' to the games. My work is in computers, so I tend to try something first, then read the instructions for it later. This forum helped me to understand some of the basics of the games. I didn't know about unlocking songs until I read about it here, then found I had unlocked some. I've now unlocked quite a few.
I have DDR Max and DDR Max2 and should receive DDR Konamix tomorrow. I'm kind of 'sold' on DDR Max2 at the moment. Just like those tunes.
At first I spent most of my time in Training mode, until I saw you needed to play the game to unlock tunes. Lately, I've been doing the Workout mode. That really seems to unlock them quickly and I like using the Program feature so the music is constant and the workout a challenge, plus you can add to the combo count.
I'm mostly a Light player at this point, but the Workout programs have suprised me with Standards and even Heavy for a few tunes I thought I really knew well.
That's why I like DDR. It's like 'tetris for your feet'.... you can always improve... may never completely master it... but THINK you can.

I just gotta say that I think that its amazing that so many people from so many walks of life with different approaches to living, perceiving, and interacting can come together over an arcade game. I believe strongly in equality of all groups of people, and seeing something like technology actualize that concept is very heartening
It doesn't matter who you are, or how you live, all that matters is that you got your a$$ addicted
I'm 20 btw (and my friends think IM too old hehe)

There ya go...
I don't plan on the 'home' for a long, long time... if ever.
BTW.... I keep introducing DDR to friends, hoping to grow interest in my community. So far... two of them have purchased dancepads and DVDs for home use. |

I'm 22... not all that old yet but I feel so when I look at all the HS kids playing but I dont let it get to me.
I've been playing for about 3 years maybe once a week all around the country and I've seen much development in my skills, so Im content.
The only effect age really brings to the picture, I believe, is speed...
I essentially play doubles and can get an A on just about all catas down... above that? E.
Max 300 is the only 10 doubles I can A. I only know the pattern well, thats why. I find myself sometimes struggling (like at the end) to keep up and all the songs above it are too fast. Someday maybe I will have played them all so many times I will be able to do them without thinking as Ive memorized them, I guess. To anybody who can line read those... kudos.
As far as age being a consideration to play? I play DDR because I have fun, period. I think everyone should do the same. Isnt that what lifes for to enjoy it? Heck, my mom plays standard, and Ive played with her. Dont allow others to make your choices for you, and who cares about peer pressure. My co-workers think its a little silly, thats all, and that doesnt bother me. Anyone can play, never be afraid or question not to. _________________

I have unlocked all tunes on my PS2 DDRMax2 game. I thought this might unlock Endless Mode, but it doesn't.
Does anyone know what unlocks Endless Mode?
TIA |

i don't know if there's endless mode at all on max2? you'll probably have better luck asking in the 'consoles' forum.
anyway, to be germane to the topic, my 40-something year old mother plays ddr. she's still on 1-2 footers, but she has a great time doing it. now if only i can get her to stop moving her feet back to the center in between every step... T_T _________________

Really??? Well I'm rather sensitive to people telling me what I may and may not discuss.
IF you were at least Japanese, I might honor your having taken offense to the reference. Fact is, I never criticized Japanese anime nor manga per se. I simply find it disquieting that so many American youth seem to be limiting their reading and viewing that that particular form ONLY to the exclusion of all else. What's more, I find that most among the DDR crowd have hardly any interests other than video games, RPGs and (I repeat) Japanese cartoons (anime & manga). All fantasy, all fiction, all the time. I call that narrow minded and shallow, whether YOU like my saying so or NOT.
Ryu_Hiragoshi wrote: | And further more they are not cartoons. That is a word that only exists in the english language and pretty sad that this culture can't respect animation as a respectable film medium. How come Japan can and America can't?? I think you need to get your facts straight buddy. |
YOU may not have noticed this, professor, but every posting on this thread is in English, not Japanese. And in English, "animation" and "cartoon" are pretty well accepted as synonymous. So I really don't give a rat's hindquarters what cartoons are called or not called in Japanese.
As for getting our facts straight and as for America respecting animation as a film medium, I'd like to point out to you that animation as a film medium WAS FIRST DEVELOPED IN EUROPE AND IN THE UNITED STATES, NOT JAPAN!!! Have you ever heard of Emil Reynaud, James Stuart Blackton, Emil Cohl or Walt Disney? I guess not.

Since approximately half of the videos in my collection are foreign language, and since the vast majority of my CDs are foreign language, I'm just going to write off to your own childish ignorance the fact that you mouthed off without knowing that of me.
While we're on the subject, professor, does Japanese have an expression for "hotheaded, arrogant buttwipe"? _________________

AlanRobert-wow can we please remember that we are the adults here and not get so defensive about things the kids say in here-it really makes us older folks look bad if we are fighting with the kids like that-Ryu isn't exactly a kid at like 22 but he is a hell of a lot younger than some of us older folks in here and he can be given a little slack for his youthful arrogance. Now you boys try to play nice!

First, let me say that (contrary to your earlier post) Ryu owes me no special respect due to my age. Respect is earned. But he obviously has little sense of courtesy toward other human beings regardless of their age.
Secondly, there was nothing defensive about it, and I have nothing to be defensive about. Nor was I fighting. I simply corrected him, as he badly deserved to be corrected. And he well deserved that correction too for his arrogance and infantile behaviour. Even so, I doubt he'll learn a thing from it. It was a waste of energy.
You know, it is quite amazing that we consider a 26 year old a "kid" or even nearly a kid. He is an adult, and I expect him to behave like one. Yes, he himself posted that he is 26, NOT 22, as you stated. So why do you coddle him as if he were a child?
My grandmother left the Ukraine at the age of 13 (half of Ryu's age) with a younger sister to join an older sister and two cousins here in the US, and never saw her parents or her other 8 siblings ever again. You see, World War I broke out just after that, and then there was the revolution that created the Soviet Union and the iron curtain. She lied about her age in order to be able to work at 13. There was no option other than to quickly become an adult.
But today, we make excuses for obnoxious 26 year olds. Sad.
STOP CODDLING HIM ALREADY!!!!! _________________
