fail end of song

For some reason whenever I play stepmania, in the little pentagon type thing with the groove and other ratings it shows "fail end of song". This seems odd to me as I have it turned on arcade fail mode. I even checked by failing a song. Anyone got any suggestions?

this might sound dumb, but does the skin you are using start you off in the song select section on beginner and you have to press

to raise your difficulty (i.e. 5th mix skin)? the reason I say this is if you switch to a beginner level song, stepmania automatically switches to "fail end of song" mode. it stays on even if you go to beginner mode and switch back to heavy and remains on until you change it in the player options menu.
