Guys, I haven't gotten much from this (except that one guy's signature move, which is cool) but I think there's gold in the characters. I'm serious. I've gotten some interesting stuff from there.

If only Stepmania will get the $#^#@^ characters usable again...
SM, why have you betrayed me? Bad Bunny, you're gonna have to wait...

It's not made sticky because it's popular or not, but because it's a frequent question. Even if there haven't been any posts for a couple of weeks, its presence at the top of the forum stops people starting new "FreeStyling Tips" threads every couple of weeks.

For the same reasons, it keeps all the tips together in one thread, rather than having to hunt through five or six discontinued threads.

PS Go FreeStyle!

Aight ive done a few routines in my day but i still end up gettin stiff knees at the end of an improve(too much low ground action) i think that i need kinda a more on/off pad type sequence. See my latest song im working on is Paranioa KCET its a pretty good groove and im runnin out of moves to do. its a cool groove but too many steps, 262 to be exact and thats on basic!!! t3h main problem is that i end up with more of a on buttons routine meaning i dont look like im acidentaly hiting the buttons which a real routine should look like. Anyways i need some tips on this.

HOw can i get blacker with my dance?

The DDR pad includes more than the 4 arrows. Use all 9 (or even 18) squares. Too many times, I can write out a step chart based on where people step during a routine. Long Train Runnin is the best example. And yes, I'm guilty of this as well.

The goal is to not act like "OK I"M GOING TO STEP ON THE UP ARROW NOW! HIGH LEG KICK!!!! BLAM!!! ARROW SMASH!!!" Be small in your step, unless you're making it a point to do high leg kicks and stomping.
Add more steps to your routine, use the metal squares, go all over the pad.

I like to be subtle when I step. And then I stomp on one arrow to make a point or get the crowd's attention.

I find this to be very funny, yet very stupid.

What are they made of? Carpet? Foam? What???

For me, I'm going to make a freestyle to Bag, it's really slow which is good. I can go run around off the padin the middle of the song riiight.gif

Hey do you think it having only like 50 arrows would be a bad thing? And what about doing beginner? 50 arrows on beginner.

I'm entering a tourney soon, I need to know this.

Some tourneys don't allow beginner so make sure first. Otherwise I'm starting to see less and less reason to argue the whole beginner freestyling controversy. It basically just makes songs that aren't freestylable normally, to be much more open to possibility. So I'd say take advantage of beginner every chance you get... unless of course you have the opportunity to do a song like Sync Oni Little XD

Well, the thing is. Most of the people running tournaments aren't freestylers. So they had no idea how long it takes to find "that perfect song". People are missing out some really good freestyles sometimes, just because they don't allow beginner.

Yeah, exactly, I'm all for Beginner steps. It's sad that we rarely see stuff like Kind Lady, Feeling of Love, Put Your Faith in Me, Insertion, Air (list goes on) - all awesome, danceable songs, but they've been shot to freestyle hell by their dense Light steps.

Stepcharts should have little bearing on the judging of a routine - what matters is what you put into the routine, and how it fits the song. We haven't hated on Clark Kent or Tran Powah for choosing BBGYL or After the Game, have we? Highs Off U? Beginner steps have the same, if not denser, charts than most 1 footers.

Someone smack up some tourney organizers for me. =\

As a freestyler and tournament organizer, let me give you my $1.00 - $0.98.

One reason I don't allow beginner in my tournaments is because it's not on doubles. If beginner was on doubles, I'd be for it without question.

When Extreme came out, and later Max2US, I avoided beginner mode. I didn't like seeing the stupid background with the character telling you where to step, and I found that some of the steps were nearly the same as the ones on light. There's something about the regular background steps that just keeps you going.

As I continue to try freestyle on beginners, I'm seeing more reason to allow it. I am going to try that (allow beginner mode) for the next tournament that I run, just to see whether everyone goes that route.

That's kind of silly when you think about it. If the option is there for beginner on singles, and not on doubles. You don't think people will play it on singles instead?

I'll agree that the background character is dumb however, you are the main attraction of freestyling. Anyone looking at the screen and watching the character is then dumb.

That's true. But some don't and by not allowing it you hinder the chance for freestyling to more songs.

You'll probably notice when you do allow it, no one will use it. Because people aren't used to having it in a tournament. It's funny how we fight for it and then no one uses the steps, I know.

I'd stick them in a place with the same arrow repeated a few times. Like Fantasy (by Melissa on 6th mix), on basic. So you don't need to move much. Same thing with liquiding, but that doesn't look as good anymore, unless you are doing era or something.

Songs with big gaps.
Can't find all that much with a good popping beat.

Then there's...
Move on to edit routines.
Try to Incorporate steps into a poppin routine with tutting.
So then you won't have complainers, complaing about how you make your edits so cheap with oversized gaps.

Bringing in popping/tutting into a regular DDR song can be hard, unless your A. a natural at Freestyle in DDR or B. You've played the song you choose to do it to a lot of times, and you know the song.

Damn, its been a grip.

Anyway, yeah so I took a break from DDR, and now I'm getting back in to it. I want the scene here to spice up, any ideas? I know throwing a tournament would be one, but sponsorship is low, and so are freestylers.
