Usually when i play on a step sim (dwi, stepmania etc.....stepmania for me) and i put a speed mod at a pause or even during the middle of the song the background seams to shift downward, opposite of the arrows. I think this happens for a few reasons,

-there is no movie playing in the background so you brain fixates on the background image and tries to keep it in one place separating it from the arrows.
-your brain thinks that the image is moving upward because the arrows are moving upward but then it sees it is still in the same place...

Thus i dub it gravity vision.

The same thing happens to me when I play DDR at home. It only happens when I'm playing songs that is above 160 bpm. I guess the brain gets use to looking at all the previous arrows. Sometimes it gives me a headache.

Yeah! This always seems to happen to me when I play Ecstacy on DDR MAX US. At the two parts of the song were the music stops the screen looks like it's falling down. It is pretty weird but cool I guess! I always wondered why it did that! E1.gif

My theory is that we're used to seeing the arrows moving and because they just suddenly stop our brain kinda makes it seem like the screen is stretching out. I hope that made sense to people. riiight.gif

It depends on how the person reads the arrows.

When I play, I stare at the center of the arrow flow, and never look at the top or bottom of the screen, I know when to step on the arrows because I count in my and listen to the beat. When a freeze occurs, it doesn't affect me because i'm NOT following the arrows with my eyes.

Others play by looking at the stationary arrows, so they have to trace their eyes on the arrows upwards till they hit the stationary arrows, therefore, when they suddenly stop, their eyes try to shift upwards anywayz, but since the arrows are no longer moving, it creates the illusion of the background moving.

That didn't make sense.

...Bite me.

Actually, that does make pretty good sense...I guess I do it using the first method you described...which would explain why I don't get this "gravity vision".

I don't use speed mods, but this all makes sense to me.

Would that be why all my friends tell me the background in Ecstasy "stretches"? I never could understand what they were saying.

I never play with speed mods, and as a result, I'm used to glancing at a stream of arrows and knowing where to move for several in a row, while focusing on them hitting the top. With speed mods, it's more of an arrow by arrow thing, so you would pay more attention to them going up, I think. My friends play with mods, which would explain why they've seen this and I haven't.

This is essentially the same thing that happens when you watch credits roll. If you follow the names up the screen, and then at the end follow the logo up the screen, things will seem to stretch when the logo stops. If you stare at one spot on the credits, and read the names when they get to that point, things won't seem to stretch.

That made sense. I look near the bottom though and just memorize what comes next, keep the beat, and hit it. Still, the gravity vision affects me. The worst time for gravity vision: MaxX Unlimited at the first stop.
