The DDR/Bemani Ringtone FAQ [work in progress]

[I've noticed that questions about DDR and Bemani ringtones are growing more and more common on this forum. I hope that this FAQ will be able to answer most of these questions. The information contained herein is the extent of what I've learned following a significant amount of research into the availability of Bemani tones on the internet, but it is by no means complete or definitive. If you have any suggestions, complaints, links or information, please post it here and I'll add it to the main FAQ.]

Part 1: The Absolute Basics

What is a monophonic ringtone?
"Monophonic" means the phone can only play one tone at a time. Monophonic ringtones tend to sound like traditional telephone rings, series of beeps or very simple melodies.

What is a polyphonic ringtone?
If a monophonic tone can only play one sound as a time, would anyone care to guess what "polyphonic" means? That's right, it means the phone can play more than one tone at a time. You get a gold star. Anyway, what this means is that ringers can have multiple parts playing simultaneously, often with multiple instrument sounds. Basically this results in a ringtone that is much more musical sounding rather than just a bunch of beeps.

Which type of ringtone does my phone support?
I don't know. Check with your wireless carrier and/or phone manufacturer to determine your phone's capabilities. As a rule, don't expect a phone that's more than 2 years old to have polyphonic capabilities. Additionally, color phones are generally also polyphonic phones.

How do I get a ringtone onto my phone?
It depends on the phone. For some phones, especially those that only have monophonic capabilities, the only way is to use the phone's built in ringtone creation utility. Some phones (especially GSM phones - i.e., AT&T, Cingular) have Bluetooth networking that will allow you to transfer tones wirelessly as long as your computer also supports Bluetooth. Some allow you to attach ringtone files to e-mail and send them to your phone over MMS (text messaging) or download them via WAP (wireless internet). One of the most common methods is to use a USB data link cable to hook your phone up directly to your computer. Then using special software, you can transfer ringtones easily.

The bottom line is there are far too many phones out there for me to explain the process for each one individually. I strongly recommend checking out the forums at http://www.wirelessadvisor.com or http://www.howardforums.com and finding information about your specific model.

Part 2: The Important Stuff

What should I know at this point?

I assume that by now you are well educated about your phone's ringtone capabilities. You've determined whether or not your phone can handle polyphonic tones, found out what file format(s) your phone can handle and learned how to transfer them to your phone when you find them. If this is not the case, go back to the two forums I linked to above and do your homework.

Where can I find notecharts to input into my phone's ringtone composer?

These files are too long/I want it to play something from the middle of the song. How do I edit it down?

matt the bald asian has suggested Anvil Studio. After playing around with it a bit, I'd say it's the only thing I can recommend at the moment. It's not the most intuitive program in the universe, but it works and it's free.

If anyone has any other suggestions, let me know.

My phone supports a proprietary ringtone format. Where can I find ringtones in X format?

You probably can't. Bemani games simply aren't popular enough for there to be much of a demand for ringtones in nonstandard formats. If you go back to Wireless Advisor or Howard Forums, you can propably learn how to convert files from MIDI, WAV or MP3 into your phone's proprietary format. If you have a specific question, you can ask it here and I'll try to answer to the best of my knowledge. No promises though.

Also, if I'm wrong and you do know of a resource for Bemani ringtones in a nonstandard format, please post it here.

Anything else I should know?

I'd just like to point out that as you probably know a lot of DDR/Bemani songs are licensed from record labels and exist outside of the realm of Bemani. As this is the case, some of these songs can be obtained through your wireless provider's content delivery system (e.g., Verizon's Get It Now, AT&T's mMode). I have an LG VX4400 through Verizon and I've seen several licensed Bemani songs on the GIN network, including Stomp to my Beat, Cartoon Heroes, Fly Away and So Fabulous So Fierce. Of course, you'll probably have to pay for these, but just know that it's an option.

Hey do you think you could help me get some of those onto my Ericsson T226? I had fun using the internet on my phone, but couldn't get any to download (I only tried the second page). I wasted about $7 (5cents / kb) trying to get this stuff to work, but ???

I did a search for "T226 ringtone" on HowardForums' SonyEricsson board and based on that quick bit of research, I'd say your best bet is to get the data link cable for your phone. It's probably about $20. From there, check out http://www.christersson.org and get a program called "SendFile". Make sure you read the directions thoroughly since you apparently also need something from the SE website for it to function properly.

http://www.3gupload.com/ also has quite a few polyphonic ddr ring tones, and for a nominal fee ($5.99), you can upload as much stuff to your phone as you want.

I figured out a method of getting midis onto my Nokia 3650 without having to buy a datakit or my phone able to access the internet.

What you'll need to do:
First off be sure that you have a card reader capable of reading the SD cards that are in these phones underneath the battery.

You need to change the setting for your Recorder options to save onto your SD card, not the phone's internal memory. After changing these options, turn off your phone and take out the SD card, put it in the reader. By changing that option, a Sounds folder should be created on your SD card (I am unsure if you need to actually make a recording to have it saved under that folder or not, I stumbled upon all of this by accident) and under that folder will be a folder titled Digital.

If the Digital folder is there then have at, put all the midis you want (as many as your card can handle) in that folder. I have yet to figure out if it will allow you to save them onto the phone's internal memory so for now it'll read off of your SD card in order to get the ring tone.



I hope I haven't confused anyone to seriously. I just learned how to do this tonight and again it was completely by accident that I stumbled upon it. If you have any questions about this method then feel free to IM/PM me.

I just found a killer place to get DDR ringtones! Plus, they're FREE! You can Paypal them money if you want, which I highly suggest being they're giving you this free feature! This site is under high traffic so it'll take awhile to do stuff, but believe me... it's worth it!

You have to sign up. Just a Screen Name and E-mail is needed.
You can then look over all of the site's ring tones availible for download straight from the site. OR you can create your own! They do have a good selection of DDR/Bemani ring tones though.

Then, click "Video Games"
Near the end of the page there are DDR ring tones there! You can view/listen and then have them sent to your phone. That means, that if you have unlimited Text receiving, They're free!!! Otherwise you're looking at PENNIES for these (Mr.) Wonderful ring tones!

Plus, if once you download these ringtones, they're able to be sent to others that are able compatible!

*NOTE* If you're a VERIZON WIRELESS user, you're going to have to type in something other than your Phone number in the box given to you. You type in '"your number"@vzwpix.com' Easy enough.

A list of a few of the songs are "Sakura", "Cowgirl", "Aoi Shoudou", "Cartoon Heroes (Speedy Mix)", "Waka Laka", "Dam Darriam", "So Deep", "Candy", "TwinBee Generation X", and so on and so forth. Some of the songs are located in other places other than "Video Games". "Kick the Can", "Tsugaru", "Do It All Night" and others are located in "Dance". I found "Look At Us" by Sarina Paris in "Techno". So check the site out!

Again, I highly suggest Pay Palling these people some money. I was trying so hard to be able to use their Ring Tone Creator but I don't have Internet Access on my phone. (My phone is an Audiovox CDM 8900 from Verizon BTW... just incase someone else had that phone and wondered if it was compatible.) It seems like they have new phone availible for service frequently so if you're unfortuantely unavailible for this... check back often.

If anyone has Internet Access on their phone and is able/wanting to use their Ring Tone Creator I've found out that it's a ONE TIME FEE of $29.95. You would have your phone receive an e-mail stating to go to a site. You visit that site and then download the song that you created to your phone. Neat huh? I was thinking of just getting Internet Access ($4.99 per month with Verizon) just so that I could give the helpful people at MyPhoneFiles.com some cash for helping me out.

Again http://www.myphonefiles.com was THE BEST place for DDR Ring Tones. It's a place that seems to be run By Fans For Fans which is something that is rarely seen on the Internet today, but is a ray of sight for those of us still looking for these kinds of services.

If there's anyone that downloads the Ring Tone Creator that they have, Post it! Let others know how it was since I can't right now. Possible in the future soon!

I have a Verizon V6000 phone. (the camera phone that everyone seems to have now) I can put Mp3's on my phone .

All you need to have is the mp3 of the song you want, Goldwave Editor (or any program that can cut and modify music files) Cell phone program called BitPim (IM me on AIM if you want it) and a USB cable that goes with that phone.

First, open up your mp3 file on Goldwave (or whatever you're using). You need to get a clip from the song that you would like to play on the phone. It cannot be much longer that 30 seconds.

Next, you need to save and convert that music clip so it is below 300kb. You need to save it as 24000hz, 48kbps, mono. Check the file and make sure it is below 300kb!

Now open BitPim. Go to the screen that says "ringtones". You will see all of your current ringtones. Now, to add your new mp3 file to your phone, you need to select that song clip and change the file extension to ".mid". Don't worry if it says the file will be corrupted, it doesn't matter.

Now, click "ADD" in BitPim, and select that music file. It should now appear on the list of ringtones. Click "send" in the toolbar at the top of the program, and select "send phone data". On the menu that pops up, only check the box that says "ringtone".

WARNING: While the program is transferring your song to the phone, DO NOT UNPLUG THE USB CABLE. It could COMPLETELY mess up your phone ;;
