I recently bought a mat of ebay and made a website/review
http://www.gameroom.com/odaen/Dance.htm
Can someone tell me what it is, cause it doesn't look like any others I've seen before in this thread, and it doesn't have 6 buttons like the Cyphergames.
Also can I take the feet off it, cause the wires appear to be in the way (see picture)
Thanks |

*Sigh*They suck. They use foil and copper contacts. If that is the only pad you can buy and a CF or building your own pad is out of the question, you'll have to mod the pad with sheet metal. |
I might be new here, but it seems like every post I've seen of yours in this thread you've got a bug up your arse or something about any metal pad other than a Cobalt Flux.
Anyhow ~

Looks like a generic metal pad, the old style ones that don't have a frame around them like the BNS/RO pads do. I've always stayed away from these pads after hearing how noisy they are and also how they dip from weight especially in the center (no support). Unfortunately - I think you're out of luck about mods on it 'cause AFAIK there are no mods for it. I'm sure you could replace the lexan arrow overlay if it cracks or breaks, but...in terms of otherwise, I don't think there are any mods for it. (Then again I could be wrong.)
Don't know if you've contacted the seller about this or not, but - I'd contact them about shipping you a different item than you paid for, and if they don't comply or offer *something*, I'd leave them a neutral feedback for it. You could contact eBay's SafeHarbor support about it but I doubt they'd do anything.
Good luck. _________________

The picture showed a different picture but for 50 quid I'm not so bothered really, the pad it showed was the CypherGames v2 pad and I *think* I might have the original CypherGames pad, so the difference isn't that critical and IMHO not worth making a fuss about.
Does anyone have any info on removing the feet and if the wires get in the way etc? |

Lazyness is not an excuse, and I would appreciate it if NO ONE answers bacamaro2000.
It's not that hard to search. Or look back just a few pages (or page 1 which will be more detailed very shortly).
zero2dash, that's because CobaltFlux'es are regarded as THE Home DDR Metal Pad. Red Octane is a decent competitior, but just about everyone loves the CFs, and they are very reliable.
He also said "or if you can't build your own", which is a good idea as well. _________________

Woah woah! No need to insult others!
Cobalt Fluxes are the best metal pads available on the market, and a lot of the other pads just plain suck. I've actually owned one of those cheap 3rd party metal pads before and I know how bad they are, and so does everybody else. I PMed Jason my first post for this thread and in it you will see that I go more into depth on why these pads sucl. The fact is, practically every pad other than the CF is horrible, and I'm not just saying this because I own a CF. Ask anybody else on the boards. The only good metal pads without mods are home-built pads and the CF (I haven't tried the TB metal dance pad, but I don't think anybody else has either). |

So what is this sheet metal mod you have to do on the BNS pads....and will it keep it running more reliably? Does anyone actually have one of these? Furthermore a CF is out of the question for me...so if anyone knows the answer to this...let me know plz. _________________

Sorry if I came off as trying to insult you (or anyone), I didn't mean to. My bad...
Anyway, I just wanted to say that I know me personally, I think Cobalt Flux pads are too steep for me at least, and most people overall. I have a full time job plus rent plus insurance bills etc. so I'm trying to find a cost-effective way of playing DDR at home without having to bear using soft mats anymore 'cause I suck on them now after 3 years of arcade play.
I've heard a lot of mixed reviews/thoughts on CF pads. Some people swear by them, other people hate them. I've never had the luxury of using one, so I can't and won't comment on them. I just know I'm too poor to buy one (or two which is what I want because I'm trying to get good at Doubles) so like many others I'm looking at a cheaper alternative.
I'm supposed to get my BNS-clone today...man I can't wait. I just hope it comes before I have to go to work @ 3pm CST...

I'm getting mine today...the mod is the same as mods for Cyphergames/MyMyBox pads which is linked in the first post (but I'll re-copy it anyway) http://www.rufus3.com/ddr/mmb.html. You simply buy some sheet metal, snip it so size, and put it between the bottom of the mat and the arrow, covering up the crappy copper contact crap they use. Apparently (from what I've read) this mod makes these pads awesome. The newer pads (BNS/RO) use acrylic arrows instead of lucite so (hopefully) they will never break although it's still possible I'm sure. (That can be replaced easily as well though.)
My biggest reason for buying a BNS [clone] pad other than cost was because I don't have the resources to build my own mat. Don't get me wrong...I'm smart as hell about this stuff; I've built two arcade joysticks that have interchangeable connections to use with every home console (mine work with 4...Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox, PsOne/Ps2)...I just don't have the access to jigsaws and whatnot to build the thing, and I figured that the BNS/RO pads already have the frame and everything built, and a little mod or replacement piece here or there is more feasible for me rather than trying to pay off someone at Home Depot to hook me up with tons of custom-cut wood. _________________

So if i got a BNS clone off ebay and modded it b4 i started using it....i'd be okay?
I've read the sheet metal mod, and i plan to do that...What about removing the center screw and just gluing the center foot on each pad to reduce wear on the circuit?....Should i hold off on that mod or just do it when i get the pad? That was on the rufus3 mod page too if u were wonderin.... _________________

Before I got my metalpads, I searched the internet, read different forums to get the feel for best bang for buck type metal pads. Here is VERY simple summary/conclusion I came. Remember how good/bad a pad from certain brand might be, there is ALWAYS exception.
1. DON'T bother with any pads that mentions the words "ACRYLIC" and/or BAR (due to material weakness and the fact that NON of the good metalpad makers listed below manufactures metalpads with bar)
2. DO look for pads with poly carb or lexan pads.
How about construcitons and other factors you say? Well due to the number of metalpad makers (there aren't dozens), it is relatively safe to say that any company that makes metalpads using poly carb/lexan panel do make nice enough pads.
So which company meets above standards? As far as I know, CF/RO/BNS and 2 I have seen on ebay. I am pretty sure BNS also adv. on ebay too which makes 1 other company which I have no clue to who/what it is.
I consider RO/BNS pretty much the same in most aspects other than price/brand sorta like Bayer Aspirin and generic aspirin.
1. If you don't care about the cost and you are a patient type, then get CF. (most expensive and slow shipping due to production time but also makes supposedly the highest quality pad, although there seems to be some complaints regarding control boxs)
2. If you do care about the cost and you are an impatient type, then get RO/BNS- (relatively decent product and decent price. Most complaints are regarnding the fact that you might have to remove the panels and clean the contact when needed)
a.If you are the type who get generic brands if if they are similar in quality, then get BNS.
b. If you are the type who never gets generia brands, then get RO.
3. If you do care about the cost but patint and vice versa, then flip a coin~
Since I do care about the cost and somewhat of an impatient type, and also don't mind getting generic brands if the quality were similar, I got 2 BNS metals pads. Only complaint I have so far is that if you step away from the center of the pad, pad won't register it as well but as long as you step closer to the center, it is very accurate. I got used to it so it is not too much of a bother now.
As for ebay poly carb pad, it sounds nice enough for relatively cheap price but I just don't like ebay in case something goes wrong or I need a warranty service. If you live near LA area, you might want to get it from BNS since you can get it the same day and also save shipping cost. The cost will be similar to buying one from ebay and paying shipping.
If you are a skeptical type, you can always do what I did and read through 40pagess of posts here and search through other ddr related boards looking for more info~ I am pretty sure you'll reach similar/same conclusion as I did. |

If i get a cg style pad off of ebay can I replace the arrows with a stronger material, but insulation of foam on the bottom of the foam(like ps2freak's mod) and than but sheet metal underneath the foam( like in Ter's mod). I would love to get the best of both worlds |

I'm looking into getting a metal pad soon, but I don't think a CF is exactly what I'm looking for. I did find one that I liked the look from DDRgame.com, and I really liked the look of it because of the bar (I still need to use it at times and i feel that it would really emulate arcade style). However, the arrows are made of acrylic plastic. I was wondering if perhaps I could get the plastic replaced with something else (let's say poly/ really thin plexiglass, I 've a friend that can cut the stuff) that it'd be worth it. Because right now I can't afford the extra 130+ dollars for the CF pads, shipping etc. Any helpful comments would be appreciated. _________________

Well as you can see above I'm no expert, but here is what I can tell you. The best metal pads are either the CF or RO. Few other metal pads are good. The ones with the bars are known to be bad. If you don't want the CF, go with the RO. _________________

Please answer, no one has answered me lately
Oh and also should i take all the rubber legs off of the bottom and then put the screws back in or should i loosen all the screws up, put the pad on the wood, and then tighten all the screws? |
