How can they deem DDR a sport? What's next, are they going to say that Initial D is actual speed racing? I don't understand how all that is going to work because as someone said in this forum, they are going to have to make a lot of changes to keep up to date with what the new modern things are when making new DDR mixes. What is Norway going to do now that DDR is sport? Don't tell me that they are going to have classes in school or sh*t like that. It would be like "Whats your third period?" "Oh, I'm going to my dance dance class right now how about you?" "I got that 5th..." Thats hecka dumb. |

Initial D is not deemed a sport because it is not within the boundaries of the definition of "sport." DDR can be seen within these boundaries.
Mainstream is not always bad. Remember the time when skating was underground? Then suddenly it became mainstream. We didn't see all of these skaters complaining about what happened to their sport.
DDR is also one of the most demanding sports, both mentally and physically. Do a little research on the web and you will see for yourselves. It ranks around the rugby and triathlete range physically, and golf mentally. |

1) Nothing is officially a sport unbtil ESPN broadcasts one of its events. So Scrabble, Spelling BEes, Math Counts, etc... AREA LL SPORTS DAMNIT! Uh, in that case so is WWF old skool style...
2) Pro Wrestling definitely takes athleticism to be successful. I would not call it a sport. But it is more than just fake stuff as well. Pro wrestling is fake like movies are fake, and like broadway plays are fake. But there is something more to wrestling, in that much of it is also improv. Yes, storylines are prewritten. Yes, outcomes ar epredetermined. But two wrestlers do not meet for five hours prior to a match and say "Ok, first, I'm gonna do this, then you respond woith this, but then I do that...".
If you sh!t on pro wrestling because it is not a sport, then you're an idiot for using that point: it's been common knowledge for a LONG time (way before Vinnie Mac made it obvious) that it's all scripted to a point.
If you sh!t on pro wrestling because it is predetermined, then I don't ever want to see you in another movie theater again, because DAMNIT THEN OUTCOME OF THE MOVIE HAS ALREADY BEEN DETERMINED!
If you sh!t on pro wrestling because you don't like watching grown men pretend to beat the hell out of each other, all the while busting their asses to make sure each one can still go to work the next day, then that's you're prerogative. Not everyone has to like it. But choose your arguing points better.
3) DDR ain't a sport. It's a video game. That you play with your feet. That's like saying that Top Skater is a sport. Riiiiiiiight. |

We've covered this already. Pro wrestling is not a sport, it's a sporting event.
Let it rest at that. |

Not neccessarily. Those people sawing logs or ironing on mountains or underwater on ESPN aren't considered jocks . |

Can you give me some more info on this thing with Vinnie Mac? Like an URL or something? I had figured out wrestling was scripted, but I don't know any history about it (I never watch sports).

I think DDR will just be registered as a sport in name only. I highly doubt things will progess much more than that. I can pretty much guarantee that the furthest this thing will go is: "Remember how Norway made DDR a sport? Yeah that's pretty cool. " That'll be about it, I reckon. _________________

Skateboarding, BMX, roller blading, snowboarding, street luge, and motocross are all considered sports (by X-Games standards). Even ping-pong counts as a sport, nowadays. Nobody identifies Tony Hawk and Dave Mirra as jocks. (Yes, I'm a gamer more than a sport geek, so those are the only names I know offhand.) |

If DDR became a sport in the US...
...there would be tournaments with prizes that make the comic 10K Commotion look like chump change.
...and people would be able to LIVE off of the earnings.
When I look at long-term devotion into any kind of game, I try to see what my return is going to be.
Magic would be a good game for anyone that's really smart to get into; there are big cash prize tourneys all the time.
Yu-Gi-Oh is starting up big prize tournaments.
I would love to see the same for DDR.
Bottom line: If you can have no other job, and support yourself (and possibly a family) on the money you receive from tournament winnings that a game gives you, then I consider THAT a sport.
BTW, ESPN has televised Magic tournaments, and I believe at least one Pokemon: TCG tournament, thus making those sports too. _________________

DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY PEOPLE! It's just cool that this is being noticed by people... I mean when you work hard at it, it's nice to get some appreciation. Not just "Oh you're good now go away so my grandkid can play" But something else. Yasu with his crazy asian powers will be getting a gold medal soon. BTW I'd like to move to Norway |

In a nutshell, this. In the early-mid 90's (I forget the exact year), Vince McMahon, owner of the then-WWF, wanted to sell his product in New Jersey, but without all the exorbitent taxes the state imposes on sporting events like football and such. The loophole he found was to convince NJ govt that wrestling was a show, more "sports entertainment" than a pure athletic competition like football. It was a big deal (in WWF circles) when it happened, and Vince bascially "came out of the closet" about wrestling, covering his buttocks by saying, "well, everyone knew it ANYWAY, and now, we're just confirming it."
It was one big business move, a move that essentially killed all the local scenes at the time. Until they took the same stand.
Something like that.

Jeez... I didn't expect this many negative posts... why not consider DDR a sport? Consider that it has a lot in common with many sports. It's an athletic activity that requires lots of practice, has a large public community, formalized competitions... Yes it's a game. did anyone forget that basketball, football, etc. are also all GAMES? Just because it's electronic doesn't mean that it doesn't share enough similarities to consider it as a sport.
I mean, ballroom dancing is in the olympics. So is curling (the sweep the ice while a stone-puck goes across it towards a target game)... sport can have a really broad definition. I think the few "requirements" (athletic, mental, popular, competitive...) are all there.
As far as people saying they'll quit if it gets sport-like, I think you're really shallow. Don't change your opinion of something you like because other people might end up having a different opinion about it. _________________

Lol, I never woulda guessed. I was against DDR becoming more mainstream for a long time. But y'know, back then a lot were all for it getting more popular. And when physical activities get more popular, you get a sport. Walking can get a magazine, DDR can be a sport in Norway. Plus its NORWAY. Unless you're in Norway or in a country that has respect for Norway, it will influence you in no way whatsoever. If you're in the US playing DDR, it isn't a sport.
But what will DDR becoming a spot cause? DDR-Moms? Driving their kids to the arcades in 4 ft of snow in their mini-vans of corruption and evil just to show off their pride and joy? _________________

i think it's great that DDR has finally become a sport.
Do you consider gymnastics a sport?
Because I do competition gymnastics and we were on the subject of what are sports and what aren't...i just wanted people's opinion. (note: it IS in the olympics) _________________
