error in stepmania

i just got an older computer running win 98 and when i start up stepmania all the songs laod and then i get this error
CreateTexture(128,32,pixfmt=1) failed: D3DERR_INVALIDCALL
anyone know what caused this,
64mb sdram

350 mhz
its about 6 years old, i got my EMS 2.0 and all the other drivers i should need running (i think)

Edit: also there is a pin missing on the monetor where is plugs into the comp, i doubt thats the problem,but thought its worth mentioning.

-does it have an acceptable 3D video card?
-does it have the latest version of direct X?
-do you honestly think stepmania will run on a 350 mhz machine?

nvm when i updated my video drivers my resolution got set to 256 colors, its running fine now, btw, anyone know where i can buy a stick of sdram?
64 megs aint holding up to well, the songs play fine but the menu's are pretty laggy

All monitor plugs have that pin missing, it's normal.

I think the problem is your video card, it doesn't have enough grunt. RAM will help with song loading etc, but for speed you'll need to update the video card.

What exactly does directX have to do with anything? Wouldn't that just compress background animations? Does it do anything if you have background animations off?

DirectX is the SDK that controls the graphics sound, controller input and more for many games, including Stepmania. It's NECESSARY.

You're thinking of Divx, the video codec. That's only needed to play Divx-coded videos.

hmm, if that pin is supposed to be missing, what that heck keeps causing the monitor to flash every 30 seconds or so....its 6 years old, so im just gonna assume its dying, but that dont bug me to much, when my graphics card gets here itll be pluged into a tv anyway. thanks guys (and gals)
