Looking through the Sakura thread, it got me curious. I loaded up StepMania and went into Edit Mode. There's a predicted meter of how many feet a song should be, according to Stream, Voltage, Air, Freeze, and Chaos.
I think the derived rating is sometimes lower than it should be - sometimes a song needs to be a foot higher simply because of its speed (ie Sakura). Anyway, here's some tasty morsels, according to the predicted feet in SM:

A - 7.0
Sync - 7.2, Sync ONI - 7.8
Spin the Disc - 7.3

Bag - 8.4
Sweet Sweet Love Magic - 8.6
Exotic Ethnic - 8.8
Healing Vision Angelic - 8.9 (EE and HVAM are both solid 9 footers)
Speed Over Beethoven - 8.9

Flash in the Night - 9.3
CSFILM - 9.3
Sakura - 9.3
Maxx Unlimited - 9.3 (Who wants to whinge now and say Unlimited should be a 9 footer? E1.gif )
Cartoon Heroes - 9.39
Legend of Max - 9.4 (How about that?)
Max Period ONI - 9.3, Max Period Heavy - 9.5

So Deep - 9.7 (that makes it technically harder than all of the above songs - but why are the above songs 10 footers? Speed, that's why.)

Max 300 - 10.07
PSMO - 10.2

Case in point: Legend of Max
I had a look through the DDR dictionary and it said:
Voltage - Peak density of steps
Stream - Overall density of steps
(The rest are irrelevant)
Legend of Max certainly has a lot of those but one thing you don't get from the groove radar is the speed of the song. Yea, technically your list would be correct, if they all had the same BPM. But Legend is much much faster than your average song, while also being high in voltage and stream, making it a worthy 10 footer.

I think that was his point; given the steps for a song, the purely mathematical way of looking at a song's difficulty might be off by a lot, simply because math can't take into account the speed, etc. - therefore, things like sakura, which is step-wise very easy, become much harder as soon as there's speed added (or speed variances).

Anyway it's all subjective, so whatever.

Yeah, I don't think the feature takes into account BPM... Then again, it was just introduced recently so it might be fixed tongue.gif

Go into StepMania, go into Edit Songs, choose a song and difficulty. Once you're looking at the steps for the song, hit ESC and go into "Edit Song Statistics" or whatever it is.

i disagree strongly with those ratings. So Deep is very straightforward and i can actually pass it with a b. if i play any of the max's, sakura, or bag, i can last 30 seconds if im lucky. PSMO i cant last maybe 10 if i dont get tired before that E1.gif

Maybe if you take the BPM and add it to the final score:

E.G. Max300 would have an extra .300 to it's score, MaxX Unlimited would have an extra .320, and LoM with an extra .333.

And even then, any speed changes would add an extra .1 for the number of times the BPM changes or stops.

Well the ratings are mathematically calculated - someone didn't just make them up. So Deep may be easy for you because you understand the steps and it's not very fast - but look at it: every second step is a 'chaos' step. And Chaos is a huge factor in determing the rating.

As mentioned before, speed doesn't seem to be taken into account in the pure mathematical rating. Therefore I guess it is up to Konami's disgression to increase (or even decrease) the rating accordingly.

These songs were rated by the program stepmania, so of course a lot of them are going to be off.

As stated before Stepmania somewhat uses a difference rating system, the feet rating is somewhat the same as regular DDR songs however there is a vary that they may change.

But as far as I'm concerning I'm kinda wondering about Sakura I mean

Heavy = 10 Feet
Challenge = 9 Feet

blink.gif

How exactly did that happen? Wouldn't Challenge be more harder than Heavy?

Same deal with Kakumei (sp?), 9 on heavy, 8 on oni.

Yeah, But If you've played Kakamuei on Oni, it's MUCH easier than it's equivalent on heavy...

As for the step ratings in stepmania, It's only rating by Steps, while when Konami Rated it's songs, the rated on overall difficulty. Bag for example, Is an easy song but because of it's low BPM, It's almost impossible to read, therefore warranting it a 10 footer. Legend of the max is the same way, But In the other side of the spectrum. The steps for legend of max would be simple if left at a beat of 160 or so BPM, But it's going 300+, therefore making it harder.

LoM would still be as hard if it was at half BPM. The speed factor is a 2-edged sword: It makes the steps nice and spread out, but 333BPM isn't nice to read either..

I'm sure if it was sold for profit, Konami would clamp down on it (I'm sure it's a matter of time before they clamp down on ITG).[/quote]

Challenge doesn't necessarily mean it's gonna be harder than the heavy mode. The Challenge steps were designed for the Oni mode, not as an even more difficult setting in normal mode.
