I made this ages ago, and never really finished it. It's on my LJ, but then nobody who would be interested would read it there. Now I don't care anymore, so I'll post it here.

------------------

Check this out:

It's a laser keyboard that's either out or close to it. However, about two years ago I saw the story in pop/sci magazine. That's when I came up with this idea:

It's a ddr laptop thing that opens up into two screens. You set it down on the edge of a table and adjust the height dial. It projects a pair of laser DDR pads on the ground in front of you. Nothing complex, it's just a ddr emulator in its own case that uses the above keyboard tech for input. I don't have any idea what the range is of the keyboard, but I'd imagine it's scalable depending on the application.

I imagine that the squares are drawn in laserlight, and a second IR laser sweeps over the keys, and the amount of reflection changes depending whether you have a foot there or not. I don't know, I haven't been able to find anything about how the keyboard works.

I read PC mag all the time, I've seen it. I had a dream DDR was like that. It was fuuun

But it seems like a cool idea. Better than having a laptop and a ddr pad, which I'll be doing soon

I'd imagine you'd have to pick up your feet alot more, seeing as it probably picks up infrared light (Or the lack thereof) so you wouldn't be able to play JSB style.

Very cool. I like it. I would buy one, especially if the computer thingy has all the mixes on it.

The great hting about those pads would be that there is no real risk of them breaking. No moving parts, nothing to wear out. awesome.

Dude, thats such an awesome invention!! I would love to have it!! E4.gif
But, wouldn't it be kind of wierd because you would like lose your footing because you can't feel the pad or anything.

That would be really awesome, considering since there's nothing to break you could play with your shoes too. and it's a lot easier for me with shoes. I would buy that though, awesome invention. and on losing the footing, i think with a little practice it should be easy to memorize where the directions are. i think it would be a bit expensive though...

Well it would feel just like the EZ2dancer machine I guess. It also works with laser on a flat surface, but I guess the laser is in the pad, and not something that projects the pads on a flat surface. (never played, only heard about it)

Anyway yeah, that portative DDR machine would be nice ^^

That looks cool, but for now I guess I'll still have to rely on my Gameboy Color DDR games for portable DDR.

Your idea is brilliant! biggrin.gif It's like incorporating DDR and Para Para Paradise all in one! I think it's freestyle friendly.

Haha, that's cool. The lazer idea is sick (as in good)!! I saw that keyboard on three different news articles. This will work. You figure they probably even know when you don't pick up your figures that high off the keyboard, you can probably still play JSB style YmkFX.

I'd think that the beams would detect a higher point of reflection (especially with IR), that would determine the distance of your foot foward or back on the pad, which would compensate and allow it to detect an actual lift. There's still have to be a lowe limit, probably a centimeter or so depending on the angle the light is projecting at, but that's th ecost of convenience.

The real problem would be your rear foot being obscured when a up.gif down.gif occurs. However, if the beams criscrossed, so that the left panel projects the right pad and the right panel the left, it would probably work at a low angle.
