- on the top of each different forum, have a listing of which members are on that page
- when people start topics, sometimes their title is too vague. then i click the topic only to see that it had nothing to do with me. maybe when a person puts their mouse over the title, a small summary of the first few paragraphs are shown.
these are just some thoughts. if they are too dumb, ignore this. _________________

1) This was a stock feature in phpBB2. I believe it was removed a while back due to database constraints.
2) That would require some serious bandwidth and caching. And I don't think you could logically render posts in an alt attribute. If you have a thought about this, explain it a bit more, I may have misunderstood. _________________

for #2
well, let's say that someone starts a thread with a topic that is a little vague and i want to know what the thread is about before i click it.
so, i was thinking that if i put my mouse over the title of the topic, it will show me a little part of the post so i know what it is all about.
example: when i put my mouse over your profile button, the little yellow box that appears says "view user's profile." is it possible to have this exact same thing for the topics? when i put my mouse over the name of the thread, the box will show the first 5 lines of the the thread so i can get an idea of what the topic is about.
i hope i made sense
if this takes up too much bandwidth or would be too difficult, then nevermind _________________

It's a decent idea, but in all practical purposes, I think it's a bit much.
It could be easy done, but I think it'll be more of a waste than anything else.
For example, as soon as someone hovers over the title, the query (open the database, look for the post, return x amount of characters) would take a bit of time.
Most of the time, the title is just fine, and mouse pointers usually hover over many titles, at least, as far as the browser cares.
I don't think this is necessary. _________________

I'd be happy if #2 was implemented, but if not, why not make it a rule that the topics HAVE TO HAVE A REASONABLE TITLE. "Guess what?" tells me nothing about the thread. "Guess what? I got a car/an IBM/raped" tells me a hell of a lot more. _________________

The forum view script draws up data from the last post made for each thread, so drawing up the post text is just a matter of editing the query involved. There would be no waiting periods for the alt text. The only downfall to this idea is the impracticality of its application, being the astronomical bandwidth hit.
It's a hamfisted solution to a problem that can be solved by people simply not making piss-poor posts. I am with Death Bringer in that people should just write better topic titles. |

You get points if your title and thread don't agree. _________________

Does that include topics like "Oh my god...." and then have something scary or shocking inside? Or topics like "What would you do if...." and then the first line of the thread being "You won a million dollars?"
Those threads piss me off so much. |

The penalty for ending a topic title in elipsis should be being suspended with a pulley and rope held in your teeth, ass-first over a dildo whittled from the world's largest chilli pepper.
I'm happy to enforce it if you let me use the DDRFreak private jet.
Suggestion #3 - We should buy a jet. |
