Catas are 9-footers like n2oxide said
"PIE" s are 10-footers
Maniac doesn't mean its a 10-footer, Its just a harder level a certain song ex. Legend of max: basic-4footer, trick-8footer, maniac-10footer (making this up)
Even if you play on Maniac there are songs that go as low as 5 I think... up to 10.
As far as SSR goes... I have no clue what that is
By the way Oni(challenge) also does not mean 10 footers either. In a couple of songs the Oni vers. is easier than Maniac. _________________

i think SSR is sudden shuffle random.
i dont know why 10s are consider a pie. i think theres a song that nearly has the bar 4/5 covered i think its maxx unlimited basic. and i think 4 is the lowest maniac have you ever been mellow in ddr for ps. |

SSR means Step Step Revolution. It was on 3rd mix, and you had to enter a certain code before you pressed start to put it in that mode. It was the only way you could play songs on heavy on 3rd mix (well one other way was putting it into 2nd mix mode depending on the machine), and the default option in SSR was flat mode. _________________

Ok, I'm a little confused, but maybe I'm just a better player than I think. A "catastrophic" song I understand the meaning of, obviously it's a very difficult song. It must be just me, but some of those songs on your list of catas are pretty easy in my opinion. Stuff like:
Paranoia KCET Clean Mix
Dynamite Rave
Kakumei
Twilight Zone
(I've gotten no lower than a B on these three)
This is just to a name a few. Is it just me, and I'm perhaps a better player than I give myself credit for?, Or do these easier songs that are technically considered to be "catastrophic" simply not deserve the label "catastrophic"? What you guys think? _________________

catastrophic is a 9 footer. no less, no more. it's just a nickname for 9-footers... even though they might be easy for you it is likely not easy for others, so by calling it a cata you give n00bs a fair warning before attempting a song.
a pie is a 10 footer. don't know why (it's a full 10 feet, maybe... or your feet become apple pie by the time you finish the song)
SSR is step step revolution (in 2nd remix and 3rd remix you enter a code, like hypertwist said, to enter SSR mode).
maniac is a level setting in the earlier DDR's (up to 5th mix at least) that heavy replaced in DDR extreme (?). _________________

I need some help on completing harder songs like the Max's and PSM. My problem is not reading or doing the steps, actually they are really easy to me. But my real problem lays in the endourence part, i can only make it to like a little more then half way, pain starts kicking in about then and i have to stop. Do you have any tips to get me up to par on these songs??? Oh yea im not fat or anything i just need to get nor stamina. _________________

You will prolly have more success playin the stamina based songs in the beginning. Most of the time players usually go through a couple warm-up songs or even rounds, that will get you going, but if your low on stamina (myself aswell ) your usually too tired to play Max's & PSM.
Even though my hardest song I'm challenging right now is like Cartoon heroes, if I'm gonna try to beat it I play it as my 2nd or even 1st song. but prior to playing I always force myself to drink atleast a full cup of water. Its mentioned on the site aswell... but it really does work!
drink like a cup or 2 of water 20min b4 starting to play, this allows me to play a couple of rounds of catas without pain, by then fatigue is the factor.
Other than that I can only suggest to gain stamina.
Good luck

Another thing that helps (though maybe this was just for me) is to make sure that you're breathing enough throughout the song. Oftentimes my attention would be far too focused on the screen to maintain a regular breathing pattern- it almost seemed like I was holding my breath. It took me a while, but I corrected this and consequently have much more energy throughout the song. I know it sounds basic (because it is) but remember to breathe! |

Shoes: depends on your pad situation. Personally, I need a lot of grip on my shoes (Sauconies are the best for this, IMO), but if you like to slide, then get something that doesn't have much grip.
The weight of the shoe doesn't really matter if you play alot because you'll get used to the weight sooner or later. Of course, general rule, the lighter the shoe, the shorter the time you'll be able to do the harder songs without having to worry about the extra weight.
Flat footed: I play flat footed, but I know guys who can wipe the floor with me playing on the toes. Again, all depends on prefernce and what you are used to. General rule, though: flat footed players have an easier time hearing their own beat when playing a song, thus "appear" to PA better because of it. _________________

And for tens.. well, let me try it this way. Playing other songs, hoping that they will raise your stamina won't cut it. I can play songs like Trip Machine Survivor and Cartoon Heroes 40 times in a day in a row (did this to try to AAA it....), but I still have trouble even passing PSMO because of stamina issues. Why? Tens are different than nines, they were structured different, they use different muscles and require different muscle control.
A) You have to know how to breathe throughout the entire song, not just when you get tired. This means learning how to breath at the pace of the BPM of the song. You are going to need that oxygen.
B) You have to have energy to start with. I.E. If you don't eat and sleep properly, you aren't going to get anywhere.
C) If possible, play with someone else who can either a) pass the song, or b) can pass the song on a lighter difficulty. Play with them and even if you aren't doing so hot, just keep going. Don't ever walk off. Do this a couple times throughout everyime you go and you'll notice your stamina shoot up the roof.
D) Lastly, there are a few songs that are perfect for stamina raisers for the Maxes. (The PS series, however.....):
V (Challenge): Jackhammering
Afronova Primeval: Fast Stream
Exotic Ethnic: Fast Constant Turning Stream
Colors (Challenge): Constant Voltage
Xenon: Even More Voltage _________________

Play with 1x more. Nothing really much more to it than that. On stepmania/dwi, on teh PS/PS2/Xbox, and the arcade. _________________

Try playing on a 5th Mix or earlier so you can't speed it up even if you want to. _________________

My weakness lies steps which are two arrows, let's say left up left up left up, going at extremely fast speeds. For instance on Max 300. My problem lies not in stamina, but I lose a sense of rhythm like after the first 4 notes and I end up just frantically stomping around trying to get through it. Odd thing is in songs like V Oni, it's incredibly easy for me, but only because V, unlike Max 300, establishes a sense of rhythm with 8th notes before it turns on the really fast back and forth steps, which Max 300 tends to throw you into. I'm really sort of stuck in a rut on these, that and arrows that move really fast in one line, as I said I lose my sense of rhythm with them, but I'm at least slightly improving on these. IF anyone has any tips/practice methods for helping do improve on what I've already mentioned, it'd be a great help. _________________
