If I recall my history classes, this was and still is a very offensive term. Now, I know not much of this, but since I'm playing it safe, I'm against further use of the word. |

So...yeah are you saying that you won't use it anymore, or that we shouldn't?
The only time I've ever really seen it used is by saying something like "Jap PS2." That's hardly offensive, and I personally think that it's not that bad because it's not being used offensively. It's being used as an abbreviation. I've never actually seen it used offensively on this site.
But that's just me. _________________

He might be talking about JAP- Jewish American Princess, but that really isn't very offensive. He could also be upset by the fact that some people call Japanese people Japs almost in the same way people use the N-word. I think. _________________

I know what the OP is talking about, I just haven't seen it used in that sense on these boards...well...ever (or at least in a very long time). If someone HAS used it I'd like to know about it, but I think that any use of it was not in the derogatory sense, but in the way I mentioned before (such as "Jap PS2"). _________________

oh no. when the term "jap" was first used, it was during time of war. and they did not use it because it is shorter, they used it because it as an offensive term and used it because they had no respect for the japanese.
it's just as offensive as the n-word and wetback.
i have never seen the word "jap" used in these forums as an offensive term. only for abrreviations, and even that is rare. _________________

Just filter it to JPN. It wont effect the modchip thread and its a better looking abbreviation anyway. _________________

That you shouldn't.

Saw it somewhat in the Console forum.

I totally agree with this. I've always used JP or "JP users" myself. |

Well, much like anything, if it is used offensively, then we will warn for it.
But I don't think it's necessary to warn someone for saying "Jap PS2" because that isn't used offensively. I always use the term "JPS2" and I know that the other moderators would never use it offensively. However, I think it is unnecessary (and a waste of effort we can be placing elsewhere) to try to get people to switch from using "Jap" to "JPN" if they aren't using it offensively.

I don't care if the word Jap is being used in a non-offensive way. If someone is using it as an insult, by all means a warning should be issued. Otherwise, it's definitely a bit overboard to censor it. _________________
