Settle down!!
The server installation is in the DataCenter's hands, not in JDogg's. He's limited to Customer Support.
EBT, this slowness could be good for you. Give you a chance to stop post whoring so much .

That could save space. |
That would just make people who only want to update the machine locations (and who don't post on the forums) do an extra step when they don't need to right now.
Also, they would have to make at least one post and that would add onto the database. |
Uuum....what? That's the point. They can post one post and if they don't post X posts (where X is greater than 1) than it gets deleted. _________________

The point is, if the problem is with an overloaded database, then forcing people to make more posts would add more to the database. Thus making the problem worse.
I do believe it was said once a previous time when someone suggested deleting users with 0 posts that having users that don't post really isn't that big of a deal. So why should we do all this new stuff (force them to post and then delete the posts if we've proven that they do it just for machine locations) when it really isn't that big of a deal? _________________

That's basicly it. Besides, what happens if a person signs up to update a machine location, updates a machine, and then never comes back to update the machine locations? We wouldn't be able to tell that, that user was inactive but at the same time, we know that s/he has x posts so we can't delete him/her. _________________

To sum it up if I'm correct, the "problem" will be fixed and taken care of in due time. It's not something that can be hurried anymore because it's not in the hands of the folks here.
It will get done when it gets done. Does that sum it up pretty much? _________________

Again, the 'better server' has already been purchased.
However, keep things in mind.
1) We're are limited by network bandwidth.
2) We are limited by database speed constraints.
More users = more querys = more bandwidth.
JDogg has already purchased the server. However, after purchase, we still have to wait for the DataServer (co-lo?) admins to set up the server and get it to a point where it can be remotely accessed.
Even after that is done, we still have to set up the server (set up Apache, set up the forum, set up the databases, set up EVERYTHING to work on the same lines as this site [if not a bit better]), and THEN we we have export the database from this server (and the site will probably be locked off for this) and import it into the other one.
And on top of this, there will probably be about a 24 hour down time while the Domain Name resolves to the NEW server. At that time, the board/site should be unlocked and running.
It's a very long and tedious process, so hold tight. _________________

Whether or not the co-loc folks will do that remains to be seen, but it seems like a short burst of total downtime would be way better than a long, dragged-out period of downtime that slowly clears up for some. _________________

However, don't take my word as the final answer. I have no say when it comes to server operation. I'm just a moderator .
I believe this server is being kept, but we're just splitting off this site+board, and giving it it's own place.
I don't know for sure, so if you want to know, ask the big chiefs up there with the purple feet. _________________

Well, I dunno how exactly the restructuring is being done (new server hosting just the forums DB, new server hosting the complete DB, etc), but if you're splitting up or migrating the DB, then end users wouldn't need to worry about DNS propagation - You'd wait to put the new server into production until after that happens. Once it has propagated (and really, this is a backend change, so the database address really could just be plopped into /etc/hosts and not have to worry about DNS changes), lock the DB, move it, change references from localhost to the DB server, and Bob's your uncle.
Splitting the DB duties would be more cumbersome, as you'd need to copy and then individually prune the contents of the two DBs to reduce size, and modify the PHP pages and/or the forum settings appropriately. Still, it's nothing but a bit more legwork. _________________

My $1.00 - $0.98 (if someone hasn't mentioned this already).
There was some banner at the top called Vontage or something like that which killed the load times on this site. Plus, if I typed fast, I wouldn't see the letters until after a few seconds.
At times, it would not be there and the page would load up at a hella fast pace.
That ad/banner hasn't been here since the beginning of the week, and my connection to the site is normal.
