I'll get to the point: I'm an avid DDR player, but I'm a bit overweight (6'1" and 300lbs). I usually take one or two aspirins before I play, mainly to relieve some light pain. But now I'm a little more concerned about an injury such as a knee dislocation, and I'm thinking that taking aspring (just 1) beforehand might help if I am injured by reducing inflamation and swelling if I do dislocate my knee. (I've also started stretching and soforth before I play.)
I felt something wierd in my left knee when I was doing "Waka Laka" at the arcade, light mode. Those quick LD/RD/LD jumps my knee didn't feel quite right, but it didn't give out or anything. I'm going to be extra careful from now on.

I do it. I usually take an Advil or 2 before I go, since DDR strains my lower back at times. Sucks to be a tall DDRer at times (6'6") _________________

Not to insult your accomplishments (we all have to start on light), but if you're feeling pain and are worried about injuries on light, I'd rethink if this was the hobby for me. It's a LOT more strain on your joints when you start on heavy. |

Hasn't stopped me yet. (I can do a few 6-footers at home, some 5's in the arcade.) I just need to loose weight (like 50 pounds) so that it reduces strain.
I've lost over 10 pounds as of one month, and my skills are improving. Maybe I'm kinda like a "Rudy" of DDR players... heh. |

well if he keeps on playing ddr, it'l help him to lose the weight, and by the time he gets to heavy he would have lost a good bit of the wieght prbly, making it easier on the knee.....then again im no doctor, just a very creepy old guy with a knife....ok not that either, im just bored. _________________

The difference is that it's Aleve, not Alive. _________________

Yeah, I was thinking about that. Problem is that I have massive, football-player sized legs so I'd need to find braces that are my size.
I've seen some impressive, hinged braces that cost a lot, but I think those are more for people who have had an injury, not for prevention.
Did better tonight. I think my body is getting used to the strain and my endurance is increasing a bit.
Risks always come with certain territory. This is a risk I'm gonna take. |

The difference between Aspirin and Aleve is that they are different chemicals. Aspirin is just aspirin, and Aleve is naproxen sodium, which, in my opinion, does a better job at relieving pain.
However, you don't want to take Aleve on a regular basis. Its probably better to take the aspirin before a DDR session, and, if you still have pain a few hours after playing, maybe pop an Aleve tablet. Aspirin is pretty safe to take all the time (actually, I think it can prevent a heart attack), but Aleve is incredibly harsh on your stomach. My mother was taking it on a regular basis for sinus headaches over the summer, and ended up in the hospital with a bleeding ulcer and needed two blood transfusions because of it.

Well true, too much of any medication can be bad. What I meant was that you can take aspirin on a little bit of a more regular basis then you can with Aleve. The best thing to do if you're going to take aspirin all the time though, is to drink lots of grape juice and eat spinach because it helps to build your blood back up.
Or, you could just say screw it all and take Tylenol, but that will eventually mess with your liver. So your best bet would be to not play beyond your endurance. If you start to get sore, then stop and sit down for a while until you feel better. Or take a couple days off from DDR.

Wow so your pretty much screwed no matter what you do huh... Well I guess I could go with Advil now. Doesn't sound like it has that many side effects for long periods of time. I don't take it everyday though, just when my leg is hurting... Which is, every 3 days or so. I'll try it out and see how it works. _________________

I was at the doctors today, asked him about my DDR medical concerns.
He seemed to think the chances of dislocating my knee were small from the motion of the game (even with the LD/RD air) and he gave me some Vioxx (rofecoxib) tablet samples, it's an anti-inflamatory, and he told me to take it easy for awhile until the pain subsides. He says its probably from starting the DDRing and playing a lot, my body just isn't used to it.
Also gave me some Paxil-CR samples, time released SSRI. It's to replace my standard Paxil for anxiety and some quasi-obsessive-compulsive stuff. Went from 20mg to 25mg so I'm feeling pleasantly Waka-Laka (well, not quite, but not as worried and fretful at least.) |
