I like to actually play the game instead of be a jackass and swing my arms around and try to spin around as many times as possible. You can do that without stepping on panels. _________________

!!! NO!! I will finish my PS routine one of these days!! DAMN YOU!!
=O it's possible, but it takes a lot of focus on making it look like dancing. Cause ParaSurvivor is hard to do that to...but one of these days I will finish the routine I had in mind for it... but it's not going public till it's perfected. _________________

I myself am a PA'er, but here in my area, there's only one freestyler; the rest are PA'ers, and I've seen so much PA locally, plus at tournaments, so it's refreshing to see good freestyling.
Jeffreyw wrote: | how bout you fs on a heavy song? then you would be good in my opinion. actually anyone better then me is good. |
I don't know about that... there are too many steps on Heavy songs, so it doesn't give you a lot of options to make a good freestyle. Many of the good freestylers these days do Light or Beginner. (depending on if Beginner is allowed in certain tournaments)
So, I like seeing good freestyling more than PA, since I've seen an overload of good PA.
And I liked the Pokemon routine.... I thought it was funny. _________________

Technically it's not that hard to bust out FS on Heavy songs. Take Jenith for example. Playing Paranoia, oooo look at all those spins hehe . And there are alot of FS who play standard. grrrr stupid pokemon ruotine _________________

I know I'm all late and all, but there's a few things I just wanted to point out:
Pen Thief wrote: | freestylers can only play relativily slow songs, and have to memorize the song, what fun is that? |
Only slow songs? That's pretty funny. I did an improv to HVAM twice and MAX300 once. Does that still count as a slow song?
Quote: | Freestylers, in my opinion have no skills, just egos. Its just a way to get attention and show-off |
I understand this is your opinion, but to go off saying that we have no skills is down right wrong. Over here in good ole Cali, most FSers can AAA a good number of songs on heavy.
Quote: | you can't say that for a heavy player, because they challenge themselves with faster songs |
And what about FSers who challenge themselves with faster songs, huh?
Quote: | Sorry if you think I went to far or if you got offended, I was just stating my view, holding back just a bit. |
Not offended, but disappointed that you were holding back. Don't be afraid to speak your mind.
Quote: | Oh and when I hear and see a person freestyle PSM on oni, then I'll concede onto the freestyle side. |
Hmm...Gimmie about a week. I think I can come up with something, even though its like over 600 steps... _________________

The thing is anyone can slap an improve routine in about 10 seconds, but how many people do you know that can AAA Xenon?? Or even AAA a 6-optioned song. Not too many. |
Yo, all right. First of all, it's "improv" as in improvisation, not "improve".
Second: How many songs have YOU freestyled? When you've done it yourself, you'd realize how much work people put into this ridiculous stuff.
I not a fan of improv freestyling, but i have much respect for peeps who take the time to develop entire routines. FS'ers, such as myself, takes weeks and months of planning to put on a good 90 second routine. Ask yourself this question: if someone who did not know the existence of Dance Dance Revolution saw the arcade for the first time, who would catch their attention? A freestyler? or PA'er?
FREESTYLE = CREATIVITY
HEAVY STEPPERS = MINDLESS PERSISTENCE
It's just a left-brain right-brain/ introvert - extrovert situation. Heavy steppers follow the rules while freestylers break them.
BTW, a good dancer performing a kick-buttocks FS routine will always look a helluva lot better than someone sticking their buttocks out, pretending the colored panels are hot coals with their eyes fixed glued to the screen.
Peace ya |

The Sovreign of Funk plays DDR for one reason. Freestyle.
As fun as it is to try harder songs on Heavy and get that Triple A I found I got tired of that. Freestyling, however, opened up new doors to me in my DDR career and it breathed new life into a hobby that, sadly, was getting stale really quickly for me.

Going to have to agree with G-funky on that one. _________________

Definitely the heavy steppers (like me ), cuz most freestylers don't actually DO anything... they just face the crowd and flail a little bit. If I saw a freestyler that went and DANCED (not to mention actually pass the song), I would be impressed. I went to the Xmas of Fire tournament and the freestyling that I saw (granted, I didn't see all of it) was downright bad.
And the fact that anybody who can dance normally (which is not much of a feat) can freestyle, but it take skill and practice, practice, practice to be a good techer. Here's an example... today I passed Max 300 for the first time! Case in point- it took me four months of overall DDR-ing to get to that level, and another month of just trying again and again to get to the point of passing Max. A freestyler can just pick some really easy song and freestyle and look decent (by freestyling standards, at least). _________________

So, I guess that means we freestylers/performers spend 5 minutes before we get up there and perform?
Those who do that are most of the time not really wanting to do much or really don't care about freestyling.
I know that every tournament I enter, I spend AT LEAST two months practicing a song (or two if needed) so I can be the best performer out there in a tournament. And sometimes, it wasn't enough. For the Powerstation Finals back in July, I started practicing my song in April, and it paid off. I know very good performers spend a lot of time, much like how technical players, perfect attackers and marvelous attackers spend time in an arcade.
The thing is, we freestylers/performers, most of the time, won't give our best in public. Why? Because we don't want to give away what we're doing for a future competition. Tech players have be good at the arcade 24/7 because you can't practice PA or MA at home, the perfect/marvelous window is bigger on home consoles.

Then, you haven't seen really good freestyling. Try it. Pick an "easy song" like 5.1.1., put it on light/shuffle/little and try to freestyle. You'll probably look like an ass to begin with, but if you keep practicing, you will get better.
You wanted to get better at tech, so you practice and practice. Same with freestylers. They want to get better? They practice and practice.
