I'm replacing my soft pads (Ignition-style) soon and was wondering if it's worth getting pad covers like RedOctane and BNS sell. How does it affect the play/feel? Does it make the surface much harder (I like the 'softer feel' of the foam) and can you still feel the arrows (I really like the raised arrows and don't want to lose that effect).
Let me know asap,

Well, I bought these two really cheap USB pads from a seller on eBay (eight bucks! $ $). They are called CyberGroove pads and they worked perfectly until about 3 days of playing (by the way, the pads were completely new. not used. I'm sure of that.). The down arrow on one got messed and the bottomright arrow on the other got messed. The package said they would last at least 4 weeks of full play. I was wonderen if the inside wiring is the same. I don't want to rip up the pad and get completely confused.
I also thought of modding the cybergroove pads into the metal/wood pads. Anyone got ne tips on CyberGroove pads?
Heres the URL to their site: http://www.globalnsu.com/Cybergrove/Intro.htm |

I have the Naki softpad for the xbox...
and I had taped it down to a plywood base... well... last night i decided to change the padding underneith... and while doing that accedentally tore the "original" foam padding under the pad... that's not the "issue"
what i found was how the naki pad does the "sensor"
the naki pad has two sheets of clear plastic with wires painted on them... and in between these two sheets is a thin foam layer with holes in it... so when you step on it hard enuf it squeezes the layers togethor and the painted on wires make contact through the holes in the foam middle layer...
is this a common way of doing it? it seams rather cheap and easy to mess up on... i have noticed that many times while doing ddr the back arrow does not seam to be as responsive.... and now i am sure i know why... while I am on one of the left or right arrows... i deform the upper plastic layer (the internal transparent plastic layer with wires paint on it) such that they are not quiet lined up like they were before...
either way... i am sevearly disapointed with the Naki softpad... and will be getting a konami branded one (from redoctane's website... go figure...)
I tried the mad catz one for about 2 hours when a freind brought it over.... it is built with the same level of effort? |

my konami pad ( the one that came with DDRMAXX2 just finally died. the down arrow stopped working) so me being who i am, Tore it open to see if i could fix the problem. it would seem that quu is right, as the konami pad uses the same set up. I have learned the the problem from bunching pads is the foam inside shifts slightly, or tears, and the sensors can no longer make contact. this is easily fixed by opening the soft pad up ( If its broken already then you have nothing to lose anyways) open the pad completley up, and then stretch out and flatten the foam, and if there are any rips, use a thin needle and embroidery thread ( about 5c or so at the craft store) to sew the tears backtogether. make sure the holes are clear of debris, and tack the foam down to the bottom of the soft pad all stretched out. A couple of small staples along the sides works best. Now lay the top of the pad back down carefully to keep it aligned on the edges. then tack that down with a few staples. nows the tricky part. if you have one of those small hand held sewing machines your set just sew the pad right back up. if not you can either do the thing by hand (which I did) or try to do it on a larger machine. after i straightened out the foam and stretched it a little, the pad worked just fine again. i will post pictures of what the inside of the soft pad looks like for the people who want to see what i am talking about whithin the next few days. its a little bit time consuming, and it may be easier to buy a new pad, but nothings cheaper than fixing it yourself |

I would be extremely surprised if the Konami pad switches weren't done the same way. Every soft pad I've seen works that way. I'm sure you could make a bunch of money if you figured out a way to make cheap but durable flexible switches In a couple pads I built I used aluminum screens separated by foam on 3/4" floorboard. It doesn't provide the same flexibility of course, and it does need replacing fairly frequently. I've been playing around with different types of pad designs to build for a while.
I just bought the Naki pad. Does Ultramix recognize it as a dance pad (rather than a hand controller)? I'm just going to mount it on MDF, use it till it wears out, and then adapt the control box to work with my constructed pad of choice (I'm not ready to mess with the pressure-sensitive buttons in the controllers yet, especially when Ultramix flags it as a hand controller). |

1. Get a 38"x38" 3/4 inch plywood for base.
2. Get a wooden pallet and use it as a base (getting the wood in top out so only the sides and bottom are remaining). I will do this so my pad will not be on level with the floor (kinda like the arcade but cheaper ).
3. Place the plywood on top of the pallet and secure it with screws.
4. I will cut 4 11"x11" pieces of 1/4" wood panel and place it (secure with screws) under the mat to feel the arrows.
5. Place the mat on top of the plywood and square panels, securing the pad with either duct tape or double sided tape w/ velcro.
Now for my questions:
1. Shall I get a bigger piece of plywood?
2. Shall I cover the pad or just leave it like that?
3. What is better duct tape or double sided tape w/ velcro?
Any input would be really appreciated. Thanks! |
Update: I now have my pad on top of the wooden pallet (although not secure yet), and already I have more perfects than before (AA'ing in some songs in Standard ). I havent placed the panel under the arrows yet (Ive been thinking about placing cardboard), but as soon as I finish Ill post some pictures of the modded pad. |

I just got my BNS Ignation for Christmas.
I am having a tricky time putting in the black foam insert. And it seems like it won't fit in all the way. The back part sticks out to a point where I can't zip over it.
Is it neccesary to zip the pad up after putting the foam in? Someone please anwser quickly. |

Hi everyone. I have a quick question.
I have a Red Octane pad cover I just got for Xmas. Now, I just have one question. Do I unzip my pad and put in on top of the foam, or do I put it under the foam. Or do I just duct tape it to my pad?
Thanks in advance!

Just thought I'd add my .02 on soft pads.
The first pad I bought was a "MyMyBox Premium Dance Pad v2.0" off eBay for just under 30 dollars. This thing was the most ghetto piece of crap ever. After just a week of playing, the top started to crack, and 3-4 weeks later, the thing was totally dead. I went to their website to try and contact them, but none of the email links they have on the website function. That's the last time I purchase anything at all from them.
For Christmas, I just recently got a BNS DX Xtreme Pad and a pad cover which came to about $60 before shipping. Far sturdier than my ghetto pad, non-convex buttons (convext buttons seem like a good idea on paper/for newbies, but they really rape you at the arcade), and much nicer looking, might I add. The thing is actually reasonably hard when compared to the ghetto pad. That thing was like playing DDR on a damn mattress. The pad cover tends to slide a little bit, but all you really have to do is duct tape it to the pad on the edges, and it stays put.
So, in short: MyMyBox soft pad = bad, BNS DX Xtreme = great. _________________

I have played DDR once. with a controller. it was a friends, i have no idea what version. but i want to start playing ddr now.
but.
i live in a really bad upstairs appartment, nasty creaky carpeted floors, yucky carpeting, yuckyuckyuck! And my mother doesn't want the people downstairs to start complaining. i don't either, but i want to play the game soooo much.
So heres the deal:
Tomorrow i'll have somewhere around $60. i plan to go to walmart, mall, wherever. i don't even know where the good stores for finding these things are in bismarck ... but i will find them.
1) do you think i could get DDRMAX(or)MAX2 and a 3rd party pad from a store for under $60?
assuming i can get it, i would need to mod it greatly (i hear it's nasty on carpets?) and i need to find a way to dampen the steps. MAJORLY. mom was saying that i would need something like a block of concrete to muffle it... i'm thinking a mod with layers of foam of some kind and plywood or something, but even through reading some of these mod instructions i have very little idea of what i'd be doing. I'm hoping i don't have to do anything involving the opening of the pad, 'cause i don't like opening up delicate things...
2) Is there a way to cut down on thumping sounds for my poor neighbors?
3) If so, could you give me an aproximate price list, material list, and step by step instructions. DETAILED instructions....? pweese?
If i don't get any good ideas by 5pm(central) then i'll probably end up getting SSX3 instead, 'cause i've wanted that for quite some time, now.
thank you muchly, and i hope i can get some help on this |

Yeah, that's the best place. And you only need a pad cover if you plan on playing with shoes. |
