Hey, just adding on to the freestyling n00b list. riiight.gif

With my new redoctane pads for practice and a new digital video cam that's weeks away, my goal is to turn a 4-year PA'er into a "decent", and hopefully "fresh" freestyler. A rarity among MY SIDE OF THE MONTEREY BAY to my knowledge. ...

You're from the Central Coast and you're a freestyler? You're not the only one. PM me, let's meet up sometime.

Don't tell me you haven't seen that......... OMG O_O you are missing out on the craziest freestyling i've ever seen (second best FS.... 1st best- 2 AZN guys in Japan FS on "Kind Lady" in a tourney)

If you ask if i FS??? Yes i do FS.... i do better in FS than PA...... i prefer Routine over Improv even though Improv is the real way to FS.....

ahhh, i wanna see that video now...dang video section...oh well...i've missed out on alot, since I joined the DDR scene late April. is there a video with those Japan Freestylers?

Yea, i agree that Improv is the real way cuz I'd always thought FS meant to do something at the top of the head. But I love to see the creativity of routines such as Phrek's Wild Rush.

-edit- i didn't really mean that improv is the real way, but it better emphasizes the concept of freestyle. it's just that when u look at freestyle rap, the words have to be thought up at the top of their heads, but some lines are remembered to spice up their lyrics. Actual rap songs are similar to routines in the way that they are well planned out. And we usually enjoy these songs better than freestyle. So yea, routines are basically performances. IMHO, i think they use the category name, Freestyle, in tourneys cuz it sounds better than Rountine Battle, or Performance Plus...yea heh heh.

i dunno about the dynamite rave routine or improv....... but the "Kind Lady" FS i might be able to get you.... kboy has that vid and i might be able to force him to give it to you.........

To me, Improvisation IS freestyle. Many of us associate freestyle with prepare routine performances. That's totally not it. We have to make that change in terms. When you go up there and think of something off the top of the head, it is freestyling.

We create...freestyle. E15.gif

I use the term Performance Tournaments because that's exactly what they are, people memorizing a song and creating a performance.

yea only thing is that routines generally do better and look better than freestyles. It's generally cause they put the time into making it look the best that they possibly can. Now if the people who set up a bunch of different routines were to freestyle something, It might look a bit better than someone who hasn't made several routines. It's cause they already know the stuff that looks flashy and can apply that at random.

I honestly would do more improv if I could make them look pretty good. But I'm also newbie so setting up a routine at my house is much better for me. When you tape yourself playing you can really see what doesn't go with your natural style in certain parts of a song. Then you can go back and change that. With improv you only get one shot, which can be good or bad.

Well, you can read through a few pages of this thread. But the basic idea is to watch others and see what works for you. Even music videos on MTV with hip hop dancing can help.

Quasi-freestyle.

When I play at the arcade I play in a way that has been described as "quasi-freestyle" by some people. I have certain habitual moves I make, like I thrust my hands in a "surfer position" (arm to my front and one to back) when I hop to the UP/DOWN freeze arrows, some other things I have a habit of doing.

Strangely enough, my freestyle saved my arse today when i played Dodgeball in gym. especially when i did a jump hand plant, (which looks like me going up into the air, spread out my legs to either the right or left, then land on the first leg and hand,) but instead i complaetely turned horizontal in the air, and i saw the ball go right underneath me! i was so amazed by what i did, i forgot about landing, and smacked my head against the gym floor riiight.gif and i also did some amazing matrix-like dodges too.

(only got out once because this one person was hit so hard in the head his head vibrated, and the ball went striaght back to the thrower 20 ft. away, and i couldnt help but laugh!)

Grrr!! My moves suck majorly. Well, I memorized a few songs on stealth. Brilliant2U (Orchestra Groove), Make a Jam!, Let's Groove, etc. Like really, really memorized. I only had to turn around once to see if I was still passing. Only to realize I had a huge string of perfects. Well, I'm still finding difficulty making that transition between 90 or so seconds of arrow smashing, and 90 or so seconds of dancing.

Hit the arrows..... with style, right?

Though intensive trial and error, I'll get this whole thing down eventually! laugh.gif

Ok, I see where a problem my lie, but first let me change this:

Hit most of the arrows..... with style, right?

You don't need ALL the arrows, that's why I'll stealth 2/3 of the song and the rest I leave for some free movement. Free movement won't restrict you to the arrows and that when one can usually pull off his best work.

Instead of trying to memorize the arrows, try to memorize the moves that you are using to the beat.

That way you can focus more on the moves corresponding to the beat, rather than the arrows. After all, freestyle judgement is all based on how well you freestyle. I actually use this method for routines, hence why whenever I perform the song backwards on mirror, I can't do it just by stepping, but I have to perform the moves because I memorized the moves, not the arrows.

It's better to practice just regular forms of dancing off the pad to know how to "move" before you implement it onto the pad. Because it'll be much harder to FS on the pad due to restrictions of needing to "step"

I agree.

When you start practicing, figure out on a full bar how much arrows you could miss while still passing. On a full bar with difficulty 1, I believe you can miss as much as 11 arrows. This really helps expand what you can do.

I am not really too great of a fs but from what i have noticed its not so much as watching the arrows, but hearing the beat if you always land your step on the beat you should do fine nerd.gif

P.S. ill be on live all evening i have to stay home and tend my sisters
