Here's the basics of my DDRPG:

DDRPG: the Legend Road (admit it...you LOVE the title).

START: name your character with an actual name AND a DDR 4-letter name (for scoreboards)

PLAY: name a rival, kinda like in Pokemon...just about everyone has one of these (I want a rival, but then again, I can't PA)

PROGRESS: your character would progress, instead of in levels, in feet. At one foot, you could only play up to one-foot songs. After doing said one-foot song, your character would mess up (you don't actually play the song 'cause that would be too boring and easy), but at the end of doing a few one-foot songs, you'd learn one skill that you needed to do well on that song (reading arrows or something). After you learn that one skill, you'd have a foot in that skill. Since you have a total of one foot in DDR skill, you move on to being able to do 2-foot songs. Rinse and repeat...you do songs until you gain a total of 2 feet in DDR skills and can then move on to 3 foot songs, etc. You can't gain a certain number of feet in a skill unless you do that same foot-level song (like you can't gain 7 feet in double-tapping unless you get it in something at least as easy as R3, a 7 foot song), so no one-foot DDRer can read Bag.

BATTLES: You're a n00b (unable to do one-foot songs) and all of a sudden, you've gained a foot in, say, reading arrows. After you select your first 2-foot song, instead of say, Destiny Lovers Beginner, you hear Max 300!!! Your rival shows up and tells you he challenges you to a PA. He tells you what a PA is 'cause you're still a retarded little n00bert and he picks a song. You watch as you and him go arrow for arrow, and then you pick a song. You might wanna pick a song that makes use of that foot of DDR skill you have, 'cause that's what you'll do better on. If you choose correctly and your rival doesn't have a foot in that skill, you'll beat your rival (you have no idea what his foot of skill is in). NOW you can do 2 foot songs as normal, AND you gain a foot of skill in whatever song you did best on, but since every song involves more than one skill, you can choose what skill your foot goes into. After each of these battles, you gain a foot for whatever # of feet you can do (one foot for one-foot songs, etc.). More on how battles are played later.

SKILLS (Foot level at which these skills are introduced to the player)

One-foot: reading arrows, staying centered (not beginner-stepping)
Two-foot: jumping, double-tapping, double-stepping
Three-foot: fast songs (over 200 bpm), remember songs, freezes (with other arrows)
Four-foot: slow songs, turning, notes (up to 8ths)
Five-foot: tempo changes, crossovers, freestyle easy songs
Six-foot: Streaming, tricks (what makes a lot of songs unique), fast jumps
Seven-foot: notes (up to 16th), double-tapping (more than 2), freestyle standard
Eight-foot: gallops, constant tricks (one trick, the whole song), jump runs
Nine-foot: high stamina, trick changes, freestyle hard songs
TEN-FOOT: no skills gained...instead, you need VERY high foot ratings in almost all of the skills

I've thought about this a while...

In truth you progressing at DDR is itself an RPG, where you are the DDR player. Ergo, a DDR-RPG would be redundant at best.

The 'bad guy's' name should be Max... so for noob players, they could be afraid to play a song with their rival's name in it.

What you could do, is if you were failing, you could "summon an aeon" to put it into FF terms. Choose Rage, and you get back to red. Charmy would cast a random mod on your opponent. Devil-Zukin would change your opponents bar to almost fail... etc.

I like making up RPGs...here's mine!

DanceDanceRevolution RPG Mix!

Story:
The story takes place in a far away land where DDR is extremely popular and there is a new DDR mix every three months. But then, darkness falls over this world. Yasu and Take are possesed by demons from another dimension and suddenly turn evil, take Naoki hostage, and threaten to prevent any more DDR games. YOu, the hero, having just gotten into the game, won't stand for this, so you set of on a quest to become the ultimate DDR champion to beat the demons controlling Yasu and Take.

Gameplay:
You move around the world Pokemon style, going from town to town winning matches and beating the Arcade Master at each city's local arcade. But noobs roam all over the overworld in random encounters, and you can also fight other DDR players on the same quest for money and experience points.

Battle System:
-Summary
The battle system is different from what is probably expected. Instead of you playing songs as the main theme of a match, you use songs as abilities to defeat your opponents. When you select your song as an "attack" a bar with a cursor moving back and forth at speeds depending on the songs difficulty. Hit the cursor as close to the middle as possible and you will have more Perfects, increasing damage dealt to an opponent. Hit the cursor when it is on the middle and you will freestyle, doing maximum damage. You can increase this for each song by raising your FS stat.
-Fighting
You have two main Battle Statistics: Vitality and Skill. To use your harder songs, you need to warm up by playing easier songs. THe more songs you play in a battle, the higher your skill bar goes, showing you are warmed up to play hard songs. But the more songs you play, the lower your vitality goes. You can rest to restore vitality, but then you get lax and loose some of your accumulated skill. So, battles mostly have you start off slow, then use a powerful song, then rest, or use an item boost your stats or lower your enemy's. At the end of battle, you gain money to buy items, experience points to increase your foot level, and Ability Points to learn new songs.
-Learning New Songs
You can only learn songs that are within your foot level. As you gain experience points, your foot level increases and the number of songs you can learn increases. You select the song you want to learn from the menu, and all of you ability points go that song until you learn it. But ome songs, even those on the same foot level, take more ability points. For example: Waka Laka and Radical Faith are the same foot level, but Waka Laka costs more because it may give you the FLOAT status effect (you are protected from the ground element songs, like Rugged Ash and the Earth Light.

Boss Fights and Ending:
Some cities have arcade where you must defeat the local Arcade Master to progress. Examples of them are Britney Spears (watch out for her deadly "Oops I did it again" attack), Micheal Jackson (attacks with songs like "Little Boy" and has the deadly special ability "Moonwalk") Hikari Utada, Remy (watch out for "Lock"), and Aaron (the final master before the end). After beating everyone, you go on to face Yasu and Take in a climactic final battle. First you face Yasu, then Take, then they fuse together DBZ style to form Taksu, the ultimate DDR playing lifeform, who attacks with the deadliest attack MAX.(period).

CHaracters like RAge and Emi make lots of appearances, too. Sounds cool, huh?

the thing is, you have to have certain techniques learnable as well..like rage learns the skill "doublestep"...and also you shouldn't be penalized for playing easy light songs as a higher level..just less experience (good pa practice anyways E10.gif)

I believe there's already some obscure japanese game like this. I know it was a rhythm dancing game, but I don't htink it was DDR. I couldn't read it, but you walked around, talked to people, and then had to compete against them in the rhythm game battles.

I'm not sure how much RPG there was, but I know I've seen this before...

DAMNIT!!!!

Well, I might as well spoil the surprise.....

See, before I got into DDR, I was into 2 things: Magic the Gathering And RPGM2K, otherwise known as RPG Maker 2000. A PC Program used for making RPGs.

After about 6 months, I had my first demo game, and people rejoiced for it was good. Soon enough, I was becoming very adept in the more complex workings of the program. Creating custom menus and character sprites.

Now, fast forward to about 2 months ago....

I sit at my computer one day and fish around and notice that all my RPGM2K Stuff is still there. So I say to myself...Holy Crap, that would be insane!!!! A DDR based RPG!!!

So I start making sprites for it...arcade Machines, dancepads, players etc...

I haven't started the actual game construction yet, but knowing the capabilities of the RPGM2K Program, this is what I can make for you....

Starts with an opening sequence, you are tagging along with your buddy and his chums one day. They are DDR players and you are not. You all hit the arcade and you see the DDR Machine, little realizing you're watching your future rival play. You watch one Techer and one Freestyler. Then your friends go up and play versus for a game. You approach them after their game, now fascinated by this new game you've never seen before.
Like any other DDR player, they insist you give it a try. You get up and are kind of forced into your first game. This is where my well-thought-out Dance engine of weefness comes in!

You Start with 3 Skill Points, which you adjust according to the nature of the song (Tutorial) You put these skill points into your skills and the outcome is your performance. For the beginning, you'll only need 2 SP, 1 in Rhythm and 1 in Sight Read.

Example: Let's say the skills you need to clear MaxX Unlimited Light are Speed Read, Speed Jump, Weight Shift and Arrows during Freeze. If you only have 3 Sp, you can't do this song since you need at least 3 SP in "Speed Jump" as well as 4 in "Weight Shift" etc etc. If you don't have enough SP in the right categories, you fail the song.

You gain SP and Stamina as you gain EXP, EXP is simply 2 EXP for each foot the song you clear was. Every time you Level up you get more SP to divide amongst your skills to clear other songs.

In the future, let's say you have SOOOO much SP you divide it into the categories for a Light song...guess what, you get a AAA!!! However, early in the game, you divide 6 SP into maybe 2 or 3 categories, you pass with maybe a B or C.

However, that's not all there is to it, you also need a specific amount of stamina or you'll exhaust yourself. If your stamina falls below 20, you slowly regain it while not playing, but after that, you need beverage to regain it, from water to Bawls to Red Bull. If stamina falls to 0 during a song, you struggle, then fail. Certain songs will help build stamina as you progress, (Candy* Light & Orion Civ Light early in the game, Crash and HVAM Heavy later on in the game, etc.)

I spent a LOT of time figuring out this engine, but it is entirely doable as far as the capabilities of RPGM2K go.

Now, as far as the story goes, you can take one of two paths...the path of the Techer or the path of the Freestyler. (This is why you watch your future rivals in scene 1) As you gain levels, you gain skills you can utilize to take either path. Each skill DOES level up as you use it, and you WILL NEED specific levels of skill. This will purposely make it more time consuming to be an ace Techer AND a champion Freestyler.

Lastly, you have 2 other things, popularity and Approval Rating. You gain Popularity from accomplishing Feats Like Stealthing and Oni's, attending tournaments, PLACING in tournaments, Exhibitioning Freestyles, WINNING Freestyles.

Approval rating is maintained by being a courteous, competent, social and pleasant DDR Player.

In the beginning of the game, you'r popularity is 0 because nobody knows who you are and your Approval starts at 75/100 since you're a noob interested in DDR.

It's going to be a lot of hard work, but I'll dedicate myself to making this a pleasant and enjoyable RPG Experience for all DDR Freaks out there. You won't be disappointed...

LOLz! I can picture Square-Enix doin' DDRMMORPG! All the characters would have awful voice-overs, and we'd dance while carrying swords about 3 times taller than us. Plus, we'd probably end up encountering Cloud from FF7 for about the 80-billionth time. But if someone smart made it, like... umm... crap... I dunno... Someone. It might not suck so bad!

If you were to convert all the MP3s to Wavs to use them for an RPG Maker game...to put it simply, you'd be taking a VERY VERY LONG TIME to DL it, Broadband or not!

To put music in and RPG Maker game, MIDIs are the best way to go.

By the way, I'm dead serious about putting that RPG idea into full action. After I made that post, I started constructing the Arcade.

I know that but hey, it'd be better to have regular-grade (albeit massive) wav bgms than MIDI synthesized stuff.

But if you want MIDIs I can't help you. But I do know a little about RPGM2K since I used it for awhile, so I may be able to help in some other way if you need it E1.gif .

Brigg, where'd ya get RPGM2K? I don't know whether to get that or RPG maker 2 for PS2...

But that RPG you mentioned sounded really really cool!

::almost wets himself think about MMODDRRPG::

But randomly SquareEnix would make you get a special sword mat and $12 a month a $4 to create a character and such.

The way I see it, as long as the MIDI doesn't sound like a cat getting stuck in the lawnmower, then it's entirely useable.

If you go to rmdownloads.cjb.net they should have it available for download in the Utilities Section.

However, in order to run the program you need and RTP which is also available for download there. The entire package'll run you 20-30 megs, but if you dedicate yourself, it will be WELL worth the effort.

Actually, now you can DL RPGM2K3, better than RPGM2K in several aspects...I haven't DLed it yet...too lazy.

...And the PS2 Version...utter crap in comparison to the FREE Downloadable PC Version. PS2 Version is BEYOND limited, while PC is completely flexible and you can import your own graphics and music.

I don't know about that one. That sounds as iffy as the whole "Let's turn DDR in to a movie" idea. I'm sure someone could add a plot to it, though, and actually give it some credibility. (It would be cool to walk around as Alice or Rage... E4.gif )

Konami did make a dating sim where you play DDR to impress girls. I actually have it... hehe. I can't understand a word of it but it's pretty funny when you bust through the top floor of a little Japanese house and the girl you were trying to impress looks down at you through the hole in the ceiling all concerned.
