These things are just irritating. It's generally accepted that the originator of a thread does not 'own' it, and they usually get slapped around if they try to tell people what they can and can't post in 'their' thread.
In a discussion forum, poeple generally discuss things. And discussion is always going to go off on a tangent. Usually a more interesting tangent then the original topic. The intelligent thread starters change the title to something reflective of what we actually want to talk about. Occasionally somebody resents that we're not paying complete attention to what they want to talk about, and so messages Spike to get it locked.
I realize that there are sometimes good reasons for someone to request a lock, I just ask that mods use a little more discretion rather than locking simply because the originator asked for it, especially in Random.
The good:
Some guy wants help naming his dog. He picks a name, and askes for a lock because people are still suggesting names. Fine.
The bad:
Ecko (I think it was Ecko) asks what some german phrase means. It eventually degenerates into a discussion about german music. The thread gets locked just when it was getting interesting. |

That's actually a really good point. I think that if a person has a good reason for a mod to lock his/her thread, then it should be locked. If it's just because someone's original topic isn't getting payed complete attention to, the mod should use their better judgement on whether to lock the thread. _________________

There aren't that many locked by request threads that I deal with.
...and why not create a new thread discussing the topic you enjoyed? _________________

Because there are a lot of good points that wont get reposted by the original author, and it's aganst the rules to link to a locked thread. _________________

It's against the rules to reopen a locked thread. Meaning that if someone posts a thread about mp3s, it gets locked, and they reopen it, that's against the rules. But if someone starts talking about a German word and it evolves to a talk about German music, then it's fine to create a new thread and say "Continuing the discussion from this thread..." Or if you'd like you can just copy/paste the parts that you felt were important to the discussion in to the new thread so that people don't have to move around to see the entire discussion. _________________

I did that, actually. I created another thread just to ask a couple of people one question. After that, the thread died.
Maybe it just time for the discussion to end, in which case there was no need to lock it. Or maybe people lost interest because it appeared to be another thread that they weren't following.
Either way, it would have been better off unlocked. You get my point. |
