I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, if not, please let me know.
Anyhow, it seems that people that play DDR tend to be, shall we say, "social outcasts", like goths and pucks, ect. Yet I'll see normal people try to play the local Extreme. They suck, but all n00bs do. Then my class lowered poetic raven, bemaniman2.0, and my own social status because bemaniman2.0 was stupid enough to say he wanted to be a member of DDR Freak (this was before he signed up). Immediatly, the class bombarded us with questions ("What is DDR Freak?" for example) and upon discovery of what the "game" was, destroyed what little reputation we'd worked to get (like I said, social outcasts, we're all goths, lol).
Then I'll go to the mall, or Star Castle. Everyone knows us, and knows what DDR is. And they all play, for the most part. I'll go to a tourny, and everyone knows what I'm talking about. And we're all mostly social outcasts. We all freestyle or play Heavy songs. It's awesome.
I would like to know where everyone else stands. This topic pressures me a lot and I need a few more IMOs.
I'm gonna get a little off topic. It's my dial-ups fault, not mine. Takes to long to open another new post. I cleared bag Heavy with 3x. Yay for me. _________________

You called me a social outcast? ?! WELL YOU CAN GO TO HELL! ALONG WITH LEADING CYBER! j/k! XD XD XD!
Yeah I am kinda a social outcast. I'm not a goth or a punk. I'm a rugged kid who gets all of his clothes fromt teh thriftstore. I can afford clothes from the mall, but being rugged is just my style. yeah people at school assume I'm the best at DDR, in which i suck compared to the experts.
I'm somewhat decent i can beat 3 tens w/out mods but barraping and i can be 2 onis. but yeah I am an outcast! |

I do not agree with this statement. I, myself, am not a social outcast--other than the fact that I play DDR, I act much like anyone else who does not play DDR. It does not leak into any other aspects of my life other than the fact that I go to an arcade to play it and enter competitions.
Labeling most DDR players as "goths" or "punks" is ridiculous. Most of the top players in California do not fit into conventional anti-sociable categories, and the people that do generally aren't good at the game anyway. So I don't know where you're getting all of this from.
DDR PLAYERS ARE NORMAL PEOPLE. _________________

Around my area a lot of normal people label asians DDR players because the game came from asia.
No one knows who I am, they don't know if I play DDR or not. I don't talk to many people. Could I consider myself as in outcast by choice? |

My friends give me hell for playing DDR. Some other people laugh at me.
I have friends though, and I'm no social outcast, definetly not. Hell, we are just the same as the others, except we would kick their butt's in DDR. _________________

Me: I am, in some respects, a social outcast. I belong to no groups or anything. I've never had a cliche pegged onto my name, and I've never had a super-close group of friends. I have lots of friends and know a lot of people...I am also a VERY extroverted and sociable person, but never any close-knit groups other than sports teams (and those are only for a season or 2 anyway).
Other DDR players...this game does have the somewhat annoying habit of making "normal" people (if there is a such thing as a normal person) look at DDRers weird. We all KNOW that there's nothing wrong with DDRers (we're perfect......lolz, I said perfect....OK, I'll stop). |

I'm sure if it was sold for profit, Konami would clamp down on it (I'm sure it's a matter of time before they clamp down on ITG).[/quote]

Well, I think this whole labeling bullsh*t seems to really stop once you get out of high school
Yeah, ummmm, I'm a girl who plays a lot of video games which to a lot of people right off the bat sends this red flag "OMG, she's a loser, nerd who has no life." Ummm...no. I'm one of the biggest social butterflies I know, I go out and party lots, I'm just a normal college kid. To say that even most people who play DDR are goth/punks is completly ridiculous. I'm one of the best players in these parts and I wear Aeropostale, Abercrombie and Fitch, and all that stupid preppy type crap. Yeah, I seem to think that most of this stero typing of people ends when you get out of Junior High or High School, or maybe thats just the way it worked for me. _________________

The way I see it, we are all normal people. We just so happened to take the time and patience it took to get the hang of such a fun, yet challenging game for our own reasons.
I mean come on, I've seen or heard of the following reasons to take up DDR....
1..."I need to shed some pounds..."
2..."Kind of a stepping stone for hitting on girls..."
3..."Stamina Training for the upcoming track season"
4..."It's just fun to play."
5..."It's a great way to meet lots of interesting people"
6...It's building my confidence and Self-esteem"
7..."Helps me overcome stage fright."
Personally, I'm 4, 5 and 6 with a small dash of 2.
I see DDR not as just a game, but a hobby. Anyone out there who has a non-DDR Hobby will know what I'm talking about. Hobbies may Require time and money, but it keeps recreation and socialization a frequent part of your life. Especially if you can talk to so many people about it.
What do we do? We get together, hang around the machine taking turns. But as we wait, what are we doing? Socializing, that's what. We talk about whatever. Whether it be best scores or what you can stealth, to what your mom made for dinner the other night. Same thing with any other hobby. I STILL play "Magic: The Gathering" on occasion, but when I was DEEP into it (Before my DDR days), I would go to Friday tourneys and play against others for the pure reason of that social atmosphere. Between games, what did I do. I'd chat with my Magic buddies about Card Combos, deck ideas etc. Everyone did it because everyone in the room was on the same page.
DDR is a hobby. Not a lifestyle, not a clique, not a completely different social group. We are just a bunch of people that do what we want and like to do. Like Magic Players, Yu-Gi-Oh players, Model Builders, Readers, skydivers, hikers, sports players, actors, singers, danc...(You get the idea)
People who don't understand why so many people like this game probably do not have a constructive hobby of their own or lack the concepts of how people prefer to socialize nowadays.
I have gotten so much positive feedback from elderly people. I sometimes Exhibition Freestyle at a local Movie theatre, (Yes, for a smatch of attention as well as practice) Afterward I have elderly people start coming up and watching me and whoever else is there. They are quite impressed.
However, the 20-30 year old age group seem to be a little more...preferably distant from the likes of us. We get the occasional young couple with baby/child who watch. Then when we're done, the ask us the usual string of questions, (You know which ones). I myself give them as thorough an explaination as possible, make good eye contact, speak properly and use a lot of body language. I use this as a tool to put a more positive spin on the otherwise negative outlook we recieve from the general public.
I seem to have posted something really freaking long....I'm sure you all get the idea of what I'm saying.
It's a hobby...And we are the poeple who participate in it. And that's the beginning Middle and the end of it...for the most part...
I'm a nerd... _________________

Wow, I actually read all of that, and with the most interest that I've had in any post in a long time. Good job on that one man. That was awesome. I think everything you said was just amazing and down to the truth. How old are you? That was a very mature thing you said just then.

That sirs and Misses gets all of you a cookie! (Ultra Nerd)
Anyway, I wouldn't call myself a social outcast because I usually am quite outgoing and tend to "hang out" with all of the other social groups and cliques. I suppose that kinda makes me some kinda Man-whore without the sex and STD's , but Playing DDR hasn't really made me a social outcast unless you're talking to my friends who will make fun of DDR breifly and then realize how good of a game that it actually is and will then shut up. Oh, and This must be my longest post ever... W00t! _________________

I tend to agree with the ddr player stereotype going on. From my own experience.
I used to have a very tight knit circle of four girl friends - nicknamed the Group of Five. Then, one summer, I got into DDRing, with my best guy friend.
I got DEEP into DDRing. Everyday, DDR this, DDR that. The other girls got sick of it, especially because they thought my "new-found" love for DDR was just to catch the attention of this guy friend (two things wrong with that: 1) I was always a DDRer, I was just never REALLY serious or competitive about it, and 2) I really could care less if the guy stopped playing).
Slowly, I began to drop out of the Group of Five. Now, they've expanded into a Group of About Ten, with lots of people who don't know each other well and are just being fake with each other, which really defeats the whole purpose.
Now, I hang around mostly with my guy friend (still only my friend) and a group of his friends, who have been converted to DDRers. I miss my old friend immensely, but that's the path I chose.
Even so, it's something to get together with other DDRers. I have the best time with the guys when we're arcade hoppin', and it's great to meet up with the local DDR legends at tournaments or what I call "cult gatherings".
I'm not gothic, nor punk, nor preppy. I may be a relatively anti-social art-girl who writes poetry and hangs out in the library a lot, but I'm not even a nerd. I consider myself normal, with one true categorization - a DDRFreak. And damn proud of it too. My friends will go to parties without me, leave me out of the loop, eveb stab me in the back. But I'll always have that glorious machine.
It sounds quite sad. But probably true. _________________
