What's wrong with all the new people that start playing DDR these days? I mean, whenever I ask a new person how many feet is the highest they've done, they just say, "Oh, I can do heavy." That doesn't really tell me anything. Back when I played 3rd mix alot people could actually recognize there limit in steps. They actually knew. Any opinions?

Simple. Many of them think playing on Heavy is a big status symbol, so they beat some tiny five-footer on Maniac and say that they play at that skill level to stay vague and make you think they can do assorted songs at that level.

If they say, "Yeah, I beat a five-foot Maniac song," then it automatically doesn't sound very impressive. However, if they say, "Yeah, I'm playing on Maniac now," it pretty much tells you the bare bones and lets your imagination do the rest.

I always figured it was something roughly like:

Basic/Light: 1-3 feet
Trick/Standard: 4-6 feet
Maniac/Heavy: 7 feet and above

There's exceptions to it, sure, but that seems to fit most of the time. Once the people play more often, they'll get a feel for what foot-level they can pass. Or maybe they just wanted to sound impressive? Saying, "I can pass heavy mode" could sound like you're blowing through MaxX Unlimited when you're really only scraping by Think ya better D. biggrin.gif

Unless you're looking for an answer like, "Oh, I can do Paramount songs"

I never met anyone else who was that much into DDR until I was working on 7/8-footers, so it's kinda moot for me. But I've always thought of it in terms of "okay, I'm gonna work on fives today."

well c i personally think iam pretty good, just getting into ten footers, but wit the really young ones i mean like 12 11 or ten year olds, i try not to ask them questions on how good they "think" they are. just let em play and judge em for yourself. itll save u alot of trouble

Oh so your talking about kids like the one who said he was better or as good as me because he could do heavy, then he did Butterfly on Heavy, and they think they're good? Yea, I know what you mean. laugh.gif

I never had any problems with arcade kids, i never really see them. However, my 9 year old sister is better than my 11 year old brother. Of course, she plays it more often than he does

grrr..

I hate arrogant little kids.

My brother (9 years old) tries orion. 78 (the slow one, euromix 98 or something) with no speed mods, he fails(last song)

this stpuid 11-12 year old comes up, does the same song, but with x2 on. He passed it with a C and he actually said to my little brother. HAHA I'm better than you because i passed it and you didnt.

So I turn around, and tell him there is no way he would pass it on x1. So after he's done his 2 songs, I get on with him and choose orion.78 but dont let it go to the options screen, needless to say, he failed miserably.

But i got an A on my first try, fairly easy actually. E1.gif

I've noticed a lot of arrogant people in my age group that play... I guess you could call me a kid still, I'll be 16 in two weeks or so. The guys get really snotty when they learn I play, because they're like "Oh yeah, girl? Well, I can do any maniac song!" and I can't help but think "Right, I bet you can do Cutie Chaser (Morning Mix)." When people generally ask me that question, I respond with something like "I'm on able to really do standard songs.. some maniac, but 7 or 8 feet is my limit."

I can deal with the snots for the most part though.. I can't deal with the little nimrods hanging on the bar/standing on back of the pad while I'm playing, or mock-shadowing me, though.

I didn't really consider myself a heavy player until I started passing half the catas.

I've had my share of kids that think heavy is butterfly... they are thrashed soon after. We ask them to play something like Last Message, and they're done like dinner.

IMO, A person shouldn't consider themselves a standard player until they can play 6's on standard, or heavy until they can play most of the 8's and a few 9's, unless they're not using it to brag to everyone that they can play them.

or maybe they don't know what your talking about and assume your asking what difficulty they play on.

Around here, we're still seeing kids who think they're smart, putting five tokens in the line at once. We just say "either remove them or we use them."

As for foot ratings, people should be more open to what they can do. I'm not ashamed to only pass one 8-footer and three 7-footers. Since there are 6-foot heavys on 7th Mix, it really is too vague a skill measurement.

I know how that goes. people usually take their turn and have another one ready, even if there is a line of people waiting.
Some people are assholes, other wont mind letting someone else go first.

And i hate when "Im only gonna play one game, can i go first?" I did that one time, and he brought his friend to play and they hogged the fuking machine! assholes.. disgust.gif

we haven't had much of a problem with that around here. with me, I never say "I can do light or standard, etc." because there are a few "light" songs that I can't pass yet (maxx unlimited, all but two of the paranoias) I always say what foot limit I can do, which is easy to mid-7 footers. "light", "standard" and "heavy" don't mean a thing to me.

One thing I noticed about the "DDR youth of today" is that people are starting to progress faster. I was playing on the maniac-level only three months after I started my "DDR career" (I passed Dead End, my first cata, in the process). I met a guy this past summer at Six Flags who had been playing for two years and he said to me, "Back when the game was fairly new, I thought passing Dynamite Rave on trick/standard was awesome for playing one year." Nowadays, I've seen people playing for only a couple of months (or so they claim) and passing Max 300 maniac with a B. It's amazing how fast one can pick up the game.

About the coin-line thing... in my opinion, it's not that difficult to understand the concept. If someone who has never played before just stood for five minutes observing the atmosphere going on around the game, they'd comprehend that putting up a token/coin on the machine will set your place in line. I can't stand when mothers come up to me, pleading with puppy-dog eyes, "Can my child go next? She/He only wants to play one game." disturb.gif

By the way: 3rd Mix = God

I actually love it when the little kids put too many tokens in the machine. They will only play one time and then I take over and get a free game. laugh.gif Or they do play, but they go run off and a lot of times the parents don't really see or care. Another free game. E4.gif

Or the little kids try to play a song, but it's too hard for them so they let me step in. ^.^

It pays off to be nice to little kids. nerd.gif

I haven't met a DDR kid who tried to be better...or at least they haven't said anything to me in public.

What you should do next time the guys do that, is say, "Really? Wow, could you show me? Can i pick the song, cause i would like to see somebody do it on heavy." If they say yes, pick the hardest cata or if you have 10 footers pick one of those, and watch them suffer. Also, i wouldn't consider almost 16 a kid, a kid is some little annoying person that has too much energy for their own good.

I am new to DDR, tho I know what you meant by feet level. I definitely think of my status as light. Foot level is variable. I can play any foot level on light, tho I think I have only seen it up to 5. However, a 5 foot song on light is very different from a 5 foot song on standard.
I think that is where the confusion lays.

Haha, yeah, I should happy.gif I had this one guy from my Spanish class in mind when I typed that out.. He looked at my binder cover quickly, which has a stepchart to Rhythm and Police on it, and said something to the extent of "Haha, that's songs easy. I bet you couldn't do "The Road Trip," it's so fun." to which, I was like "What?" and he said "Some song in fourth mix. ...Right. But then again, he claims to be able to do both Rhythm and Police on Maniac (only said so when I told him my best friend could and that I was awed by it) as well as MAX300.. While I know it's possible, I'm doubting him, heh. Glad to know I'm not a kid anymore, either.

Edit: And Rage, nobody made the assumption that you were like that, or that every young player is like that. They were just pointing out that they commonly notice it in the younger group of players.
