Well, my home pads are really nice and slippery, so I can swerve and slide around all I want, but the arcade pads are metal and I don't get the manuvering I want on the arcade. I usually can't complete harder songs on the arcade as well as I do at home. But the arcade has better songs. Maybe if I wear my karate shoes (they're very small and slippery) I'll do bertter at the arcade. But they'd make me look fruity, so I guess, fo me, it depends on what I want to listen to.

I honestly think there are merits to both settings...

The arcade definately has the showoff appeal and the atmosphere.

However, I am a big fan of home because I don't have to wait in line to play, and I can put the volume up as much as I want. I could definately see how people would hate playing at home with crappy Cobalt Flux pads (yes, you read that correctly) or soft pads, but with my MyMyBox metal pads, the "feel" is reasonably close to the arcade anyway, since the arrows are sunken in a similar fashion and the spacing is the same.

Despite all that, though, I still say that home should emulate arcade. However, since an arcade is at least an hour drive, and costs a buck a game, I feel that the arcade is a great treat, and that home wins overall...

DDR is now officialy part of my life. (BTW, I prefer arcade i have a GAME CUBE) But anyways i live 2/4 of a mile away from the arcade. You see i have a towncenter rite beside my house i have to hop the wall and then jwalk the street to get to it. Every day b4 i go to school i have to walk through it. At my highschool i stare at the arcade wich is alos about 2/4 a mile away. This towncenter also includes a KFC BK MC and a movie theater along with top notch surf stores and some hawaii only food stores aka LOCO MOCO drive in some oriental crap. But every day before and after school i go to that arcade i spend 2$ a day i have been doing this for about 1 and a half years. I currectly won the contest over at that arcade. 28 people entered and i got a 200 token prize wich is not bad for 5$ entree fee. Guess i wont have to spend 2 actuall $ for about a month so maybe i can save up and get a surf board (those things are so dang expensive. I am sure someone else has to live in my comunity on these forums. My name is {Z3r0}-NoViCe I live in Mililani, Hawaii AND I AM A DDR FREAK.

Hmm... I prefer both, actually. Playing at home is fun because you can play as long as you want without having to spend a single cent. There are no lines, and if you get tired or mess up on a song right in the middle of it, you can just sit it out and not worry about losing money! laugh.gif

Playing at home definitely helps you dance with confidence so that when you ARE ready to play in the arcades, you won't feel as shy as you might have been if you just walked up to it for the very first time. When I started out playing DDR, it was at the arcade. I never played it my entire life but I had always watched others and how they danced. So I guess you could say that that helped me out a bunch. So when I actually stood on the pad, I almost felt like a natural DDR player. biggrin.gif

But I like both. Although I have to admit that the arcades are a tad more fun because you get crowds watching you! E15.gif

I like arcade more even though I don't play at the arcades that much and when I do it takes me a couple songs to get used to it. THe main reason I like arcades more is because my pads at home suck

I'm not sure if I responded to this, but I prefer the Arcade over the Home anyday. Both has it's advantages and disadvantages. I like both, but prefer the Arcade.

Would you care to explain that? I use Cobalt Flux, and I don't see what is so "crappy" about them. They're more responsive than most arcade arrows, and they don't ever break (unless you step on the control box or something). Or do you just not like the layout, since it isn't a replica of the arcade pad?

MyMyBox metal pads break unless you mod them, because of a poorly placed screw that is below each arrow, where your pad can sustain burn damage and tear (Unless they changed the design recently).

Anyway, playing at home is good for learning the game, but terrible if you want to be able to perform well in tournaments. The huge perfect window of the home versions of DDR becomes even more apparent when you play on a good metal pad. My PA has gotten so screwed up because of all the home play I did. I recently decided to stop playing at home just to try and get my PA acceptable for the tournament I'm attending in December.

I prefer the arcade. It's harder (just because of the perfect window), has a larger song selection, has an "atmosphere," and I feel like I accomplish more when I play on the machine. Home play is alright for occasional use, but if you really want to get good enough for tournaments, you're gonna have to limit home play at some point.

I prefer both versions of the game as well.

Home Version: I don't get as nervous and I seem to perform better on the soft pad. I save money this way and I don't have to wait for someone to get off. I can be the DDR hog. E15.gif

Arcade Version: I get nervous when there are really good people watching me. I also have to get used to the metal surface. But it makes me feel good to think "do a good job, you have people watching you!" Arcades are good for me to challenge other people...

Well, I'm just gonna say Arcade All the Way.

No metal pad that can be bought comes even close to 'arcade feel' in my opinion. All the metal pads i've had you have to step exactly in the center to get it to register, and after a few songs the crappy foil sticks in the sensors and they gotta be cleaned. I thew in sheet metal instead of that foil which got rid of the cleaning part, but they still were no where near 'arcade like'. Plastic pads aren't even an option in my mind, after almost killing myself passing drop out on heavy, never again, they suck lol.
EDIT: I have MyMyBoxes (going to sell them soon) and they feel like any other metal pad that isn't an arcade pad...gotta step in the direct center or no register for you. add another 'boo' in the 'home ddr' slot (to me anyways).

The arcade has the lights, people, volume, and overall better aura for DDR. It's just more fun. Waiting in line isn't so bad, it only takes a few minutes. While you wait you can mingle and talk with other ddr players and vwala- New friends! The sensors in the arcade register no matter where you step on them, not just the center like home metal pads. The sensors are the main reason playing in the arcade rules. (well unless the pads suck, which can be fixed if the managers of the place are nice enough to do it, some don't care and they suck like their pads do)

I still play at home though, i've managed to import almost every mix, and got a J-PS2 to play them on. To whoever said theres only 4 mixes for the home version...why do i have 'DDR, DDR Extra mix, Disney Mix, 2nd mix (plus 2 append CD's), 3rd mix, 4th mix, 5th mix, DDRMax (6th mix), DDRMAX, DDRMax2 (7th mix), DDRMax2, and DDR EX'...theres still more that i don't even have yet, so theres a lot more than 4. E15.gif

Again, I hate all pads except arcade ones, and if you're wondering what i play on at home, well I play on This little fella ^__^ It took forever to build but it's the only way to play at home!

In closing, ARCADE RULES! (at home on arcade pad also rules! E13.gif )

To all of you out there complaining about the home pads, I honestly don't know whats wrong with you.
I bought a metal pad off E-bay from a guy called Neo-games9 and its awesome! I've had it for about three months now
and I haven't had any problems except one LED went out.
My pad feels just like the arcade except its just the tiniest bit bigger.

I must admit, I love the arcade. The one closest to me (anyone go to Searstown Mall Massachusetts?) is awesome.
There's a guy who works there that is a DDR freak and he was hired mostly because he takes such goddamn good care of the machine.

There are only a few things I hate about the arcade, n00bs taking your game when you have a coin reserving your spot (grr!),
people who play with dirty shoes and then don't even consider
cleaning the machine (double grr!), and the fact that you can't hear the music.

At home I'm the only one who plays except for a few friends who try it once in a while,
so anything poopy that happens is my own fault, and I can blare the music as loud as I want!

So here: Arcade for the people and experience, Home for practice and alone fun

Arcade all the way. Home just doesnt have the feel of the arcade, and the timing at home is less then stellar.

Making an actual Metal pad for home from scratch does have the arcade pad feel, just not the Local DDR community feel.

yeah that's very true, it's just nice having it around for when the arcades close and everyone still wants some ddr goodness. I've had people come over and that brings the community feel, kinda... granted it's not an arcade... It'll never be the same as an actual arcade, but close enough for me E13.gif

I like the arcade. I love the arcade! And if someone were to ask me, "Hey, I've got MAX2 at home, do you wanna play there or at the arcade?" I'd just stare at them blankly for a while, grab them, through them into my car and drive down to the arcade! Why? Simply because a) the arcade machine is just way cooler than playing at home b) I don't even have the luxury of playing on metal home pads, so unless somebody brings it over to my house (I don't own it) to play on hardwood floors, it becomes impossible to play any hard songs well, because you end up chasing the pad around the room! c) the MAX2 machine I play on has the most super-sensitive pads you could ever imagine! I could probably play by blowing air onto the arrows, and they'd register! (okay, not that sensitive, but you get the point!) This also goes back to superiority over home pads, because soft pads have a tendency to CRAP OUT. So, yeah...arcade all the way, baby!

I don't think anyone here truely can say home is better. Why are you registered @ DDR Freak? Either you're rotten and here to brag or flame, or you signed up for the awesome community. And let me say the awesome community is more likely to gather at an arcade then in some weird house where there are so many variables...

Anyways, home is for when no one else wants to go to the arcade but you still need your DDR Fix. However if someone says:"Wanna go to the arcade" I'll drop whatever I'm doing and go!
