So, while warming up at the last tournament, I paused before selecting Twinbee ~Generation X~, and turned to the gathered DDR players behind me.
"Anyone know 'The Konami Code'?" I asked.
Six blank stares.
"Come on, 'The Konami Code'? You know? 'Up Up, Down Down...'?"
And not one of them could respond properly with "Left Right, Left Right"!.
So, to ensure that this travesty doesn't continue itself, I present to you A Brief History Lesson.
In the begining, there was the Nintendo Entertainment System (okay, so it's not the begining; shut up and listen). And there was a game publisher called Konami (you may have heard of them). They made lots of games, but in just about every one, you could enter a code at the title screen to get some kind of super cheat, and the code was up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right-B-A-B-A-start. (In Contra, for example, it gave you 30 lives).
Konami, as I said, made lots of games. Many of them were of the overhead scrolling shooter variety. They also made a game called Twinbee, which was a spoof of that genra.
Time passed. DDR was born. DDR Extreme came out, and it included a song called Twinbee ~Generation X~, which is a remix of the music from the Twinbee video game. (Yes, yes, it was originally in BeatmaniaIII. Details.)
And now, the point I was going to make before I selected the song:
"Anyone know the Konami code? Watch this!"
Now, go look at the opening 13 measures for Twinbee ~Generation X~ (single standard).
Those who don't know history are doomed to miss all the in-jokes. |

I had this argument a few days ago with my friends. It seems that the second B-A wasn't necessary for Contra, but it _was_ needed for many other games. And a quck googling shows that it's still in use: Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance has it.
And, of course, select-start instead of start for two players.
Aparently, 'B-A-start' means 'turn right 90 degrees'.
[Edit: HARMony of Dissonance, not SYMPHony of Dissonance.] |

That's a cool find but in all honesty I think it's a coincidence. _________________

I was just *waiting* for someone to say that.
So, I don't have _every_ DDR song in .dwi, but I do have over 500 (so figure about 3000 stepcharts). I searched through all of them from up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right. (For any unix geeks out there, "grep -I -r 808020204060406 *" from the base of your songs directory).
There were exactly FOUR songs that had that sequence.
It Only Takes a Minute (Extended Mix) (single light) (from DDR 3rd)
Together & Forever (single light) (From DDR Solo 2000)
Don't Try to Stop It (single standard) (From Dancing Stage Euromix 2)
And Twinbee ~Generation X~ (single standard and double standard)
So, it could be a coincidence. Less than 1 in 600 stepcharts have it, but it could, concievable, be a coincidence. But Twinbee has it at the begining, four times (well, if you turn right), in a row. It seems like to much. And Twinbee is already a joke on top of a joke, so why NOT add another layer to it? (Heck, that's how I found it, by looking for the joke of "uuddlrlr" in a ddr song, and I was _stunned_ with laughter when I saw it was in Twinbee.) |

Ah! I never played Twinbee on standard, and I never noticed that! That's great.
Good old Konami code.
I also memorized the TMNT2 code for the NES, that gave ten lives and the stage select. B, A, B, A, up, down, B, A, left, right, B, A, start. |

The Konami code is also the only way to open up the last few gallery pictures in 5th Mix for PSX, except modified to accomodate X and O |

What game was it that if you inputted the Konami code at the opening screen, you'd get the message, "We are not Konami?"
Ah... Ordyne for the TG-16 (thank you, Google). |

If I remember correctly, Gradius III for the SNES required a slightly different version of the code, using the L and R buttons instead of the control pad. If you entered the original code using left and right on the control pad, the ship would self destruct! _________________

Don't forget "Life Force"... the Konami code works there too.
Check this out: Urban Dictionary: Konami Code
It really is an inside joke that defines the Nintendo generation. Good job on finding this in Twinbee, that's so funny! _________________

THe Konami code is also in Make a Jam (Light/Basic).
Also, many Konami titles shared the same pause sound.
I've played Contra, Life Force, and Bayou Billy, and whenever I hit the pause button (Start) it's the same sound.
And if any of you have played recent versions of IIDX, look at the modifier indicators at the bottom (left if you play 9th Style) on the song select menu. Don't they somewhat resemble the powerup boxes in the Gradius series? |

Heh.. the Konami Code.
I remember seeing a shirt at Hot Topic not too long ago that had the Konami Code on it. Brought back fond memories of my younger brother and I playing Contra. _________________
