I have a quick question about FreeStyle tournaments:
When you play your song, does it decrease your score if you do not have your song as Stealth?
I'm asking this because due to my current situation, memorizing the steps won't be an easy task (I have over a month and a half, but it would not be who of me to spend more time memorizing steps than studying for the next level in my job field).
I was wondering because I have a routine down, I can easily pull it off if I can see the arrows, but I was wondering if not having the song on stealth counted against you, or if it just looks more impressive that way. |

Some tournaments could get picky about this but generally, it's just done to look good. However, you run the risk of forgetting steps and failing the song that way. Usually memorizing the routine (to stealth capabilities) and then just sticking Mirror on, will be just fine. So just in case you forget something you can always give a peak and hit the arrow.
Giving that peak might cost you some points though. _________________

I hear ya about the job situation. My job is like that as well, not to mention my other aspects and hobbies in my life that keep me busy from making good routines.
I find that it looks better if you study the movements rather than the arrows. Remember, you don't have to hit every single arrow, including some awkward diagonal jumps. You just need enough to pass the song.
Sometimes it helps to remember you're moving your body this way to hit the following arrows.
I don't think stealth really adds anymore points than mirror to be honest. Points can be taken off, but I think honestly it's ridiculous to take off a good amount for a tiny peek. Constant tiny peeks, though, that's another story. I've even done it where I faced sideways enough to see the arrows without turning my head. Or a quick spin to do a quick check on the arrow placing. there's little tricks one can do to look at the arrows without making it seem obvious.
Just some small things I've observed.

My thing is, ALWAYS put it on stealth. Do it or else, you'll get some of the crowd looking at the arrows.
I've noticed this before. One tournament, I left the steps visible, and I actually got a comment saying how I missed steps.

I typically do better freestyling to songs that have lyrics because I can lip sync to them. Heck, even lip syncing helps you remember steps and sequences. Plus, it just shows you know the song and like it.

I know I keep claiming I'd do some Irish Dance rotuine for Bag in a tournament, but I feel that I would choke horribly. So I'll do a song where if I'm going to choke, at least itll be one where I can act like a total idiot.
Ska A Go Go Light Double Little
There's a HUGE gap in the beginning. I was thinking of going out into the crowd and messing with them. kinda like what Phrekwenci did in Drifting Away and Wild Rush. But this is Spinal Injury, we're looking for lesser quality since I have the rhythm of a cinder block. I'm just looking for something funny. some ideas to toss around.
I think I'm actually going to stick to this one. This time around, hell, I have a little over a month to practice, I'll need it
And what's better, the steps are VERY systematic and easy to memorize for me (thank god).

Ok, that is a good point about stealth. The audience will always look at the screen's arrows because we are so used to counting perfects.
So in that way, stealth is good. But confidence is also a factor. _________________

I would prefer stepping up the speed of the arrows instead of using stealth. That is if I had completely memorized a song, maybe once I do my opinion will change. Anyone who's going to say to you "hey you missed some of the arrows" really doesn't understand FS yet. _________________

I would agree with you on this, but for some reason, people are still mesmerizied in trying to pick out the steps to the song on X8.
I have seen a gy play Maxx300 on 8X, people were still looking at his screen |

Bringing up the fact that audiences watch the steps more than the dancer... I actually have gotten to the point where I can keep that from happening a lot, I mean a lot of the crowds I get might peek at the arrows behind me to see what I'm doing cause a lot of them don't know what DDR is all about, and the few that do just don't pay attention after a few seconds cause I make sure they don't.
Crowd control is a big part of freestyling, the idea is to keep them focused on YOU and not the screen, and if someone tells you "hey you're missing arrows" while you're freestyling, just like... smile at them and keep on dancing like you know what you're doing. Cause all you gotta do is pass the song, not worry about that ugly D at the end. I've gotten that a couple times and in response to the comment just did some kind of flair.
I like jumping off the pad and doing stuff, it makes it feel more freestyle, and it also directs the attention to you and not the screen (save the hardcore PA'er who panics and tugs at you screaming YOU'RE GONNA FAIL YOU'RE GONNA FAIL!! LOOK MISS MISS MISS!! AAAAAAAAH *head explodes*). Sometimes there aren't enough songs with enough time for that, so in that case I find a spot with very few steps and make sure I hit all the steps before that period so I have more of a life bar to use up. This would be like... steps every fourth beat for a while...those tiny ones are expendable of course. _________________

however, if i were judging and you just deliberately skipped 5 or 6 arrows so you can dance around the machine, i would dock points.
and this is just personal preference: i do believe that hitting every arrow isn't important, we aren't going for a score on the screen, we're going for a score in the crowd. However, the game of ddr is hitting specific arrows on specific rythms, and i feel that dance routines/freestyle should be created around these guidlines, otherwise you're dancing great, but the machine is secondary.
just my opinion on this matter, i've heard other arguments and seen great freestyles that oppose this... HOWEVER:
Mid-A Tournament: Greenbelt, MD... 1st place: Astynax: Get-up-nmove doubles little light.... there are what, 20 arrows? he was barely moving one the arrows came up, but when they went away he was doing crazy breakdance moves all over the place. CONTROVERSY! _________________

For me, it would depend on what that dancer did while he/she missed those 5-6 arrows. If it was nothing/something insignificant, then I'd dock points. If it was a buildup to an intense move, or it was something intense, points shouldn't be docked.
The machine is secondary, however, it's not a distant second. You still need the machine to pass the song. Duh.
You HAD to bring up that tournament. However, you forgot:
Get up N Move
Doubles
Little
Trick/Standard. The song has about 40 steps. It was what he did with arrows that pissed all of us off.

I think that it does matter. I personally try to FS at least at a trick level, it depends on the foot rating of the song really. I guess that's why I like a lot of what J-Dogg does in his AM3P routines, and have done some of my own. Of course I'd stray away from using them in a tournament setting. I saw a thread where some someone actually called for an all trick or above tournament. They didn't specify if the little mod was allowed or not. _________________

I'll have to agree with that statement. |
Hah, yeah, I was pleasantly surprised when I heard him in your top 3 on Audio Phrekwenci...he always stuck out for me in the East Coast bunch. I loved what he did with Let's Groove at the WTF gathering. |
Cool, I'm a hero. and I think I missed something. Audio Phrekwenci? What? _________________

A freestyle routine shouldn't have to rely on hitting the arrows...in my mind all you need to make a good routine is to pass and look good doing it. Now in the case that one uses what arrows he or she does and it doesn't really flow with what he/she does off the arrows, then it looks chopped up.
I dunno what the deal is with this one tourney you're talking about but it sounds like what he did wasn't very cool or something? Elaborate? I'm just curious. _________________
