Well, I'm not the baddest player, but I'm definitely not the best! I can only dance up to 8 steps-on a good day. I have a big problem with songs that are over 190bpm. No matter how hard I try, or how many times I practice, I still can't score a good grade in songs like Healing Vision-angelic, PARANOiA(really any PARANOiA), Orion.78-civilization(which really pisses me off becuz it's my absolute fav) and MAX 300. WHAT THE HECK AM I DOING WRONG? Oh yeah, I won't even attempt PARANOiA Survival-even the name scares me! Anybody got any tips? |

-what i do is when i play stepmania, i increase the diffuculty to 5 and life difficlulty to 6. then, in scores, when i get get a AA, i look at the score, if it is x650000 or more(x=footer minus one) im good enough. otherwise, i keep playing
-dont try to AA hard songs. play easier songs that has similar beat to the hard songs
-if your trying to AA 10s, play standard. playing them is like a preview of the heavys except for the ps, psm and oni...for that...practice drop out then ps for psm then for psm oni
-when you see twist always keep your head on the screen make sure your whole leg is facing the exact position and body face half way
-try freestyling, your rhythm will increase
-try to get the rhythm by moving to the whole and half step look at the arrow bar flash and hear the music for the beat
-always stretch, so your legs dont have to go reach out to that arrow and make sure you get used to hitting the center
-increase speed, your foot will easily do double steps but do it on 200 and below
-and if your small like me bent your knees a little and relax for 2 MINUTES as you play, play long versions -you can try yoga lol
-also download videos of people AAA without bar raping
-here a tip: those triple steps like paranoias csfil, dont press hard lift high and bend knees |

Don't worry, I'm not that good either and I really don't have any pointers cause...I'm not that good.
Well, I guess all I can say is practice. I play on every level. But on certain songs I have to rape the bar like a pansy...but that's cause my legs give out. I play almost every day and I've been FSing a LOT and that takes a lot out of me...especially when you hit your knee on the screws. So I grab the bar a lot on the Maxx's. But that's only on the hard runs of 8th notes. Usually I can pass most songs without grabing the bar.
I guess keeping your body a little limp and not so stiff. Knowing the song helps too. Cause there are times when you need to move your feet fast. The Paranoia's are really hard cause they have a lot of runs so you have to keep your feet moving a lot and they can tire you out pretty fast. So, if you know what the steps are that are coming up then you can plan on how much energy you want to use. Cause you don't want to be in that "quick feet" mode when there are only normal 4th notes. You can lose your balance or be off beat when the 8th note runs come. And you can tire yourself out.
But that wasn't really at all any help but I thought'd I'd give it a try! _________________

do you rape the bar during that song? lol. It's a hard one. Now, you have to try Paranoia Survivor Max on Challenge. THAT's hard.
I can do pretty much any song and pass it. But I can't guarantee a good grade. Like I almost fail Maxx Unlimited everytime I play it and the same with Legend of Maxx. But I'm close to AA Max300. Weird huh? The only problem i have is those steps that are way off beat, the 16th notes. Songs like Xenon and Tears are really hard. I even have a little hard time on Insertion and I've been playing that since 5th mix days. _________________

What exactly do you guy mean by freestyling? Pounding your knees and using your hands...isn't that more of a Pump It Up kinda thing?
Anyway, my style is pretty unprecedented. I do a lot of jumps, spins, and stretches. Not only that, but Im just a dancer period, and I try to merge normal in-the-club kinda dancing with pad dancing. I can be pretty interesting to watch! First, what is freestyling, am I doing it, and do you have any tips? |

Freestyling is FREE-STYLING. They do what they want to make it look interesting. I mean, I've seen Butt-Butt-Revolution plenty of times. That doesn't look to interesting but it's somewhat creative. But freestyling is NOT doing tech...don't look at the arrows and go in a normal patter, move around, get into the music. Almost the exact same thing you would do at a dance hall or something. If you wanted more info on FS then go to the FS forums.

I TOTALLY KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN!! The whole "hot friend was watching and I had to impress her but she has a bf" deal. But I don't bar rape unless it's something like any of the Maxes or Paranoia Survivor Max on Challenge mode. And congrats on AAing that song!! I still can't max combo it...but I lose a lot of stamina in the beginning and I usually play that song last after playing for hours and hours non-stop. I take $20 to the arcade so I have to play for hours...fun huh? _________________

Pounding your knees and using your hands is a way to freestyle, but that's become "old school" freestyling. An example of this is on this website in the video section. It's Brilliant 2U Orchestra Groov by the Bui Bros.
http://ddrfreak.softwareimpact.com/videos/jasonko/Santa-Monica-Pier-6-3-00/Bui_Brothers_-_Brilliant_2_U_OG_Maniac.mpeg
Note the knee drops; classic "old school" freestyle move.
Of course over time, freestyling has evolved beyond the mentality of "how many different ways can I hit this arrow," and adopted a fresher, more "dance-like" routine. For example, we go back to the video section of ddrfreak. http://ddrfreak.softwareimpact.com/videos/2002-12-28:%20SportsWorld/Rebelpilot-LongTrainRunnin.avi Here's Rebelpilot freestyling on Long Train Running. Very different style of freestyling compared to the older videos.
Some routines are purely for comedy. Like this one, which is a friggin riot and a personal favorite. Once again I'm dipping into the video section of ddrfreak. This is the couple routine of PMG & Chronos on Petit Love. http://ddrfreak.softwareimpact.com/videos/jasonko/MatsuriAI-10-13-01/AI2K1_PMG_Chronos.avi
From what you wrote down, yeah you're freestyling. Basically all freestyling is putting on a performance using a DDR routine... What you're talking about does sound cool. Do you have any videos? I'd like to see them if you do. |

Whoops sorry Tamashii. Didn't answer your question.
Advice on freestyling? Really freestyling is your own original creation, so the best advice I can give you is to keep it original and fresh. There's really no "money" move or anything like that. Judges look more into a solid routine and a performance which they enjoy, so go off of that. |

Hmmm yeah I see.
Well all the vids are in the video section of ddrfreak.com, and I said the fs'ers names, so you should be able to look them up. BTW I really suggest watching the couple routine of PMG & Chronos on Petit Love....

I would just say practice and practice. At least that works for me. Then again, I'm a noob and still bar rape Max 300. So, you probably shouldn't get advice from me. _________________

use your heel. it's easier and less tiresome to move your heel quickly rather than your toe. |
Are you sure using your heel is faster and more effective?
Using my toes, or upper part of my foot seems easier to me. Anyone else's opinion? _________________

The only way to gain stamina is to push yourself. Try playing songs like CSFILSM, Japan, Rhythm and Police, or any songs that just constantly attack you with a high stream of arrows (It helps if its fast too) Play Max 300 1st stage a lot.
as for doube, triple taps and jack hammer steps (think era, 5th mix Paranoia Eternal, CSFILSM, dead end, paranoia) try to use the ball of your foot, not the heel. If it helps you, try doing them flat footed.
Watch people play, learn to recognize patterns in the arrows. If I see a line moving down and left to right, I know it is a LDUR pattern.
I'd offer more help, but Economics calls me _________________

I own DDRMax2 for PS2 and I've started working on easy 7-footers like Silent Hill, Love At First Sight, and Don't Stop! on Heavy. I've also passed Kind Lady: Interlude and Silent Hill: 3rd Christmas Mix.
My question is, where do I go from here? Which 7-footers should I tackle next that won't kill me? Are there other Challenge songs I should attempt at this point? And what's the best song to learn how to gallop?
Okay, I guess that's four questions. Either way, could you guys help me out? I always seem to do better when I'm able to tell myself "Well, so-and-so said I should be able to do it, so it shouldn't be that hard." _________________

While I can't exactly answer your other questions, I do know that Tsugaru Standard will get you started on the gallop rhythm. Take Me Away is the only 7-footer with gallops, and it's pretty tough because it also has freeze arrows and a turn-around gallop mixed in... I'd say that you should try In the Navy. That song has some basic gallops at a moderate speed. The toughest part of that song IMO is the "We want you!" section when they have triple-eighth beat jumps... Since you have a home version, go to Training and just section off the gallop part and practice it.
I don't know if you've unlocked it yet, but you should try Kakumei Challenge. It also has the gallop rhythm.
A general tip: Watch the songs. If you have a home version, go to training, turn on Assist and Solo, and just sit back and watch the steps. See how they match up to the music, learn where there are jumps, learn any tricky rhythms, and see if you can find places to do a crossover or something. Use the x2 speed mod: it will help you distinguish clusters of 16ths by separating them into 8ths. _________________
