Im sure you've all seen the thread for the improv revolution project.....what i think would be cool is if we could spread the word out and attract alot of ppl.....many ppl say freestyling is dead....we could use this tournament to show that it isnt dead.....i think this would be the perfect opportunity. .....just a thought

Phrek, I just have to say how cool it is to see you get better and better by watching these videos by date (the most recent Tears and era just kicking total ass)...I like doing it to my own as well. The only difference is that yours don't go from Suck to Sorta Watchable, they already start at Watchable. :o

Electro Tuned your first...man, some place to start.

And as for the improv revolution format...damn I'd be down for that. I actually have the end of December until mid-January off for winter break and I'll be in CA, so if it was on the right date...*drools*

Thanks for the good words. Haven't done much with my freestyle lately, but again I think I have something I want to as an exhibition for the upcoming SW tournament. Since I don't compete anymore.

yes i'm pretty new here. yes i know jumpin off the machine is bad and handplants and kneedrops are lame, but isn't it cool when someone does a rollout/spin from a kneedrop/handplant? just wanna start freestylin, thats all.

I don't think they're bad as long as you konw how to use them and you make them look interesting. I like doing knee drops and hand plants but do spins and turn around while doing them. Or they kind of go with the song. I don't think that randomly doing them is good though. And some people just over use them. Some songs like Dynamite Rave (I do it sometimes, don't yell at me) feels like it should have some caues of the beat. But something like LTR or After the Game of Love doesn't feel like they belong. For those I tend to stick to just getting in the groove of the music and moving my body. Arm movements and feet placement are really good. As long as you don't look like you're just playing tech, make it interesting, give the crowd something to cheer for. Doing something funny is always a crowd pleaser (like falling down on the last arrow or something).

As for the Matrix walk, that isn't as bad as it seems if you know how to place your feet on the machine (not on the glass alright!?!?). Putting your feet on the metal part just below the glass and on either side of the scroll arrows always is a good place. And if you put most of of your weight on the bar and not on the machine you can still make it look cool. Me and my friend are practicing that and he's been getting pretty good as to barely even touch the machine sometimes. His landing is a little off cause of it but we don't want to break the machine!

FSing is fun because it's different and everyone can do what they want. Tech is cool but always looks the same...so, you see it once, you've pretty much seen it. Watch some videos of Phrekwenci (If there's a god at FSing, He is the one). He's really good and always gets into the music. And his routines are original. Good to watch and get some ideas from.

Hah, yeah, I was pleasantly surprised when I heard him in your top 3 on Audio Phrekwenci...he always stuck out for me in the East Coast bunch. I loved what he did with Let's Groove at the WTF gathering.

Well the east may never have the kind of community Cali has for DDR but.............

Well I used to be just strictly a PA player till I checked out some videos of "freestyle", and that just completely destroyed my interest in DDR'ing for perfects. Actually it was some of the A-Team's videos, which are pretty impressive, the only thing that kind of looks silly is how they hug the bar a lot during their performances, but still very well done.

Phrek I've checked out a few of your videos as well, and I'd have to say the Wild Rush one was absolutely phenomenal, seriously. (Creepy, but artistic E7.gif )

Anyway I've been getting more and more out of the PA loop and more into FS'ing myself now, since I've never seen an east coast freestyler as of yet...well... not anyone who's ever done a real performance or anything. But the first time I tried to do it just for the hell of it was at the local arcade/movie theatre with a couple of friends there (who also DDR). So I just tried it for the heck of it, and note, I've never had dance experience in my life, never been to more than 3 dances (at which I did nothing but chill, really) in my life, and I don't research dance at all, as in watch music vids or anything like that.

So I get up and do this "mini-routine" I patched together over the weekend, and according to them it looked good o.O. Even one of the employees at the theatre was watching and seemed somewhat impressed. But since then I've been actually paying more attention to a lot of things that have helped a bit, you know, attracted a crowd, gotten attention etc.

Again, Phrek, you are SO right about using the effects in the chosen song in a routine, or even an improv (provided you know how the song goes). Also a lot of audience involvement helps, it seems. Although you can't please everyone. I get some odd looks from the people who have never seen DDR before, and some people applaud, but never just one or the other. The last time I freestyled to Long Train Runnin' actually some girl came up and asked me "How y'all do that backwards!?" and I just smiled, cause it was cool... heh.

Anyway FS I guess is just about having fun, and not caring whether the crowd you get will like it or not, but now what I do is PA for a bit to warm up and that usually gets a curious crowd around the machine while they wait for their movie to start, then I do some FS'ing.

Now I just need some advice on some things I could do to work with repeated arrows in a similar direction (like R, R, R, R) other than the "running man" thing. You can only use that so many times after all before it gets old... disgust.gif ... reason I ask for advice in this is because I'm working on some kind of FS to Healing Vision Angelic and it has a few sections with repeated steps like that, and I don't want to use the running slide thing at all cause it doesn't fit the song, and I'd rather not just pound on the arrow repeatedly... sooooooo yeah.

I think I may have something. Depending on your orientation, get off the pad and hit the arrows. People have some sort of extra fun when you get off the pad for a bit. Also focus more on your arms and keep your legs still during it too. That will help. I was working on a routine to 6th mix Fantasy, and on basic there is a load of up and then a load of down arrows. That's all hand motions.

Yeah, that's another thing I noticed you seem to do in a lot of your routines, the problem I have is I can't figure out how to "hit" the arrows and do that at the same time (keep my legs still), but I've started to focus on the upper body a whole lot more recently if possible (Era is another fun one for that biggrin.gif)

Practice standing on the arrow, and applying most of the weight to the other leg. Then control the amount of pressure to the leg that is on the arrow and lightly step on it.

You can also accomplish this by keeping a part of your foot off the arrow, and rocking on top the arrow with some weight. Some people do this when bored of a song and stand in the inner corners of the arrows and rock into them, during maniac songs. It's extremely difficult to focus on how to rock on to them, but it's weird looking to see someone not move through Leading Cyber until the 16th notes.

Well I got the chance to mess around on a friend's pad tonight with some of those tips... seems to feel "right" during a song, now the next thing I need to figure out is how you decide what to do next. So I'm there, I know the steps, I could do the song backwards, but what's got me confused is sometimes I can't decide what to do next, or how to make it look less like i'm hitting the arrows and more like what it's supposed to be: freestyling. I mean yeah I concentrate a bit on upper body a lot more than I used to but sometimes I feel like I'm still just stomping arrows...

And sometimes sliding around doesn't feel much more like an improvement when that's all I can do or go back to stomping...... aghh this is the dilemma. So how do you decide just how you want to move your feet during the performance, cause I find myself repeating a lot of moves on the lower, but as for the upper I think I'm happy with that.

Remember that there are different types of ways of using your foot to hit the arrow. Heel, toe, flat foot. Some show different effects. The way your entire leg moves is also a factor. Minimizing and maximizing the motions in your leg show differences in freestyle as well.

what would you guys recommend in terms of upper body movement?...because i find the fancy foot work can come pretty easily because you aren't really diverting your concentration from where your feet are supposed to go...but when ever i try to do anything upper body with my arms and such

well lets just say things go wrong riiight.gif

any suggestions?

I would make arm movements very exaggerated, make people pay attention to your arms. Pop n' lock works well, especially the popping part (that would be with the pointing and the hand rolling). Take a look at some dance videos. Nsync, Jackson, Usher actually have good moves, whether you find them to be good artists or not.
