I've been playing DDR for close to 2 years now, and aside from irritating some ligament fibers in my left knee, I've never experienced any kind of injury or ailment from playing. However, recently I haven't been playing as avidly, at least not since a tournament this summer. Toward the end of the summer, I noticed and realized that I have a hernia, and those are either due to excessive straining through heavy lifting of some form (which I haven't done in a while), or to a congenital defect (which is why I have it).
Aside from an occasional jest from a friend that I got it from playing DDR, I've been getting criticisms based purely on assumptions from my family that I got it playing DDR, and the funny thing is that they don't know much about the game or playing it other than you dance and that it's physical.
My question is this: have any of you all EVER had a hernia (specifically an 'inguinal' hernia) because of playing DDR?
A good site for information on inguinal hernias is here: http://www.mindspring.com/~videosur/ingheind.html
My other question is, what are the most typical kinds of injuries you have ever received because of DDR? |

I've never had a hernia, but my legs have collapsed on me due to overworking my muscles. I've never had a broken bone in my body or anything else like that. |

As sung to the the tune of Livin' in America (DDR Version)
God I hate my life (I hate this hernia)
Lump's there all the time ('cept when I'm sitting down)
I can't sleep at night (because I'm vomiting)
Because my scrotum's twice (the size it was before)
This hernia is not so fun (Can't hardly stand up right)
This nausea's gone too far (and it hurts when I fart)
Bang, bang, bang, oh pay the doctor those dollars in your hand. (so he can fix you up)
Living with a hernia (a hernia)
Living with a herrrnia (WHAT DID YOU TELL THEM???)
Living with a hernia (a hernia)
Living with a hernia (I have abdominal pain)
Anyway, my best guess would be that you're overweight, or you're straining yourself too much while you play. Seriously, I would take it easy if I was you until you're compleatly healed, or you're going to wind up having to keep on going back to the doctor for surgery again and again. _________________

I used to have two inguinal hernias, but this was long before I discovered DDR.
When I was a teenager, I noticed there'd sometimes be a little bulge above and to the left of my dick when taking a leak and stuff. It could easily be pushed back flat and made a squishy, gurgling noise as it happened. I had a dishwashing job around the age of 19 and had to mop a lot of floors. Every day this would strain my gut and this bulge would show up right on cue.
After I quit washing dishes, I went back to easier jobs (delivering fast food) but the bulge still occurred at times even when I wasn't using the bathroom. Sometimes it would hurt a bit. It wasn't a problem that was in my face all day so I didn't think much about it.
In my early 20's I was pleased to see that sometimes my left testicle would appear larger than usual. I did not know why this happened until years later. One morning in 1996 at the age of 23, I was awakened by an excruciating pain in my left testicle, with a scrotum that was larger than ever before. I finally decided to see a doctor! It turned out that my intestines were entering my sack through this inguinal hernia and squashing my nut. I never even knew I had a "hernia" before then.
The doctor was unable to push the obstruction back into the abdominal cavity, making this potentially life-threatening. They booked me in for emergency surgery that day. The surgeon was able to restore my sack to normal upon his initial examination, so the immediate danger was over. But, since he got called in to do this operation, decided might as well go through with it.
It took days before I could walk comfortably, and weeks before I was back to normal. Problem never came back, and I'm glad it's all over.
Two months later, I had a similar surgery for my right inguinal hernia (discovered the day of my prior surgery) which was very small and had yet to cause any problem.
Anyways, that's my story. Hope it helps. |

Dfur, you just can't win, can you? Seriously, you've had so many problems with your balls, its unbeleivable... Anyway, the only problem I've had with DDR is A. Sore feet and B. I got chaffing on my inner thigh once. Burn. Don't remind me of hernia checks... <cough><cough> _________________

Umm......uh...cute song. I'm about 230, most of which is muscle because I used to fight in judo tournaments, and I stand at about 6'1", so I don't think it's because of that, and I freestyle. I seldom strain myself when I play, even when I PA. But thanks for the input to everyone! |

If you never noticed it before, why do you think it's a congenital defect? Is this getting worse?

Not really. These matters were all connected, and even DDR played a part!
When the doctor was checking me out (the day of that terrible ball pain) he asked me the strangest question I've ever heard: "How long have you only had one testicle?" All I could say was "well, there's something there sometimes" This "something" turned out to be that smaller inguinal hernia on the right side.
The surgeon wanted a semen sample before my surgery. Try as I might, there was no way I could pull this off in the bathroom of a doctor's office at the hospital. Anyway, they fixed my hernia. Days later, I produced the sample they so desperately wanted in the comfort of my bedroom, and took it to the hospital. That's when the doctor told me I was sterile.
Weeks later, an ultrasound was performed to locate my right testicle. It was removed three days later, during the same operation in which my right inguinal hernia was repaired. Years pass.
In June 2003, I fall off the DDR mat injuring my hand. On one of the following doctor's visits about it, I mention the slight breast development I've had since the loss of my nut, and ask if there's a connection. He said my breast tissue growth was likely the result of a low testosterone level. A blood test soon confirmed this, and he prescribed testosterone injections.
He also got the "ball rolling", so to speak, by mentioning there is a surgery to correct my partially-descended left nut, and that I could get a prosthetic right nut at the same time. It's been on my mind ever since.
Oct 2003: Still looking into all this, soon to see another urologist. And helping those I can. |

I have a hard discoloration in my skin above my left leg, a little lower than my bellibutton. I used to think it was a hernia, but now I just think I was abducted by aliens. |
