It's also just a cheap korean ddr knock off that nobody likes, with a lousy song selection, rediculous looking bars, and a horrible scoring system.

IMHO, The song selections are fine. They're mainly MAINSTREAM Korean Pop songs. The bars are fine, nothing wrong with them. Scoring system is fine. Steps are more natural for FREESTYLING.

Yes, and thank you. biggrin.gif The songs are easier to freestyle to than ddr.

Midnight_Sakura, if you want to see how then drive down to L.A. to an arcade call Cyberzone. Watch someone play PIU and you'll see what I mean.

What in gods name ever gave you that impression? I'm pretty sure pump came out around the 4th mix era.

I've heard this game before, didn't the company that made PIU tried to sue Konami for stealing their idea even though Konami's DDR killed the game sales? I remember reading about it and Konami won the case hehe

Me and my boyfriend saw pump it up at an arcade in Traverse City in MI and he tried it and said it was really hard. He said he didn't like it. I didn't play it so I couldn't say.

It's a bit surprising to me when I realize I'm seemingly in the minority. I tried PIU and hated it. I'm sure for someone who has played it for a while, it's fun; but I just couldn't get the hang of it. Too difficult for a mediocre DDR player like myself.

My thoughts exactly.

Now I'm a really good DDR player, maybe I could try it again...

As for the music, I have a question: Of the few times I got to play the game, I saw a song called "Summer of Love" but I couldn't find it the next time I went to play the game. Was I hallucinating? Or does that song really exist?

My PROs and CONs for PiU. Just for reference, I've been known to describe Pump it Up as "It's like DDR.... only not as cool." However, it's not completely terrible, and hopefully this will give you non-PIU people an idea of what the game is and how it's different from DDR.

Also, please don't pick at points I make that are marked as opinions..... they are my opinions.... and if you disagree.... you're wrong =-P (seriously, though, please don't rag on my opinions).

CONs
* It's not as advanced. There is no indication of what beat a note is on like vivid or solo in DDR. There's no course selection modes (no ONI t.t) There's no options like dark, reverse, et cetera.

* Not enough time for song selection. In earlier versions of the game, it gives you 30 seconds or so to choose. I believe they updated it in newer versions, but it still isn't as nice as 60/90 seconds you get in DDR7th/DDREx.

* Song selection isn't as cool (opinion). Not to say there's no cool songs, there are (ie: Winter, the Wipe Out mix, Beethoven Virus), but a lot of the songs just don't get me in the mood for arrow stomping. Many songs seem much shorter and aren't as energetic as DDR's techno and JPOP. Also, I feel some songs have poorly written step patterns that do not effectively emphacise the beat of the song.

* The arrows positions make balancing harder. The diagonal arrows put your weight where it's hard to balance. They also promote more double-stepping, which makes balancing hard as well. Lastly, jumps requiring both left or both right arrows make it feel you are jumping off the side of the pad.

* Gimmicks. Some of the harder songs are made difficult by adding "gimmicks." The thing I have in mind here is the triple-jumps, which require you to knee slap or hand slap an arrow! That's pretty cheesey (though watching it is funny as hell....)

* Scoring system. The scoring system is like the 5th mix DDR system. I like DDR's new AA/AAA system better. Also, it is much easier to get a PERFECT on PiU than it is on DDR.

OK, all you PiU people hate me now, so I'll keep my promise with the pros, as PiU does have a good number of advantages DDR could really use.....

* The backgroun videos kick DDR's buttocks! Sure DDR has its green man riding a go cart and Yoga bunnies things, and blue elmo characters..... but PiU goes ahead and has a custom video for each song. And the videos aren't half as abstract as in DDR (no colored confetti or spikey balls). The coolest part is that many songs have little characters that go along with the song (Beethoven in Beethoven's virus, for example) that appear in their appropriate songs.

* Doubles is cheap! Doubles costs the same as one player! There's a setting for DDR like this, but it also makes VERSUS mode cost less, so most arcades have it disabled.

* Lastly, and probably most controversially (opinion), PiU is better suited for freestyling. I'm not saying that DDR is for tech players only or that PiU doesn't have it's share of 10-foot "pie" songs.... but there are more arrows, and thus more degrees of freedom for a person to move around, twirl, and pretend to "dance" (like the real thing =-)

Personally, I like DDR much better, mostly because I like the songs better, but I can see how there is such a large PiU community as well. I'm not trying to say DDR is better or PiU is better.... I'm just blowing time right now before I have to do homework =-]

I hope this post helps PiU never-heards even if just a little bit.

i dunno about everyone else who likes it .....but the last time I played PIU...It bl0wed..alot . It just seemed like some freakishly cheap DDR kockoff as i think someone else said already. I also hate the whole diagonal, center buttons thing, the loading time between songs, and the selection for songs seemed kinda complicated too. The only part that I like about PIU is that it's freakin easy to get the extra stage E15.gif .

I can't really explain it. I think it's the combination of the type of songs and the arrow placement. But when I play Pump, I find myself randomly breaking out into freestyle a lot more readily than with DDR.

There are different mods in Pump...just not quite as many as in DDR. Also, the hard songs are so much harder than DDR. E12.gif And it's not just because I play more DDR. Take a look at some stepcharts. Also, like IIDX, almost everyone and their mother uses speed mods (which appeared in Pump before they did in DDR), because there are lots of songs in which the arrows are really close together.

I'm surprised this hasn't been settled yet. Pump It Up did come out before DDR, but only because Andamiro saw DDR before it was released.

Also the lawsuit was settled out of court.

Also no more "PIU is a cheap Korean knockoff posts." PIU actually does have good music. And a good amount of good music as well. It it didn't have plenty of good music, PIU would be as unheard of as techno Motion.

I played Pump It Up in Florida, and I say it is a terrible copy. Not only is there a middle panel you have to STOMP on, but the arrows on the screen will suddenly change pattern and speed in the middle of your rythmn. The soundtrack is atrocious, including Oops, I did it Again, Mambo #5, and Livin La Vida Loca. I HATE pump it up! devil.gif

If you are really good at DDR, and you go to a PUI for the first time (or DWI, whichever one has the center button), are you a natural, or does it take getting used to?

I don't like pump either. If you don't know how to select your song with the diagonal arrows, you're screwed. And the arrows are harder to read.

Yes, Konami did try to sue Andamiro, the Korean company who made PIU. They were unsuccessul.

But I'm surprised no one mentioned Pop'n Stage.

P'nS has the exact same layout as PIU, doesn't it? I've heard Konami produced it to spite Andamiro for ripping off their Dance Simulator concept, making a "copy" of their machine with a Pop'n theme.
