This is getting to be an epidemic among my friends. They all keep pronouncing Konamix as (CONE-a-mix). Come on. The company is Konami, pronounced (kuh-NAH-me). And the game name comes from Konami + Mix = Konamix. Hence (kuh-NAH-mix).. no cones about it! This site agrees with me on the pronunciation of Konami.

Once I was playing with some kid and it was his turn to choose, and he asked if I wanted to play (AB-ee-ISS). I asked him to repeat it 3 times before finally just agreeing. He proceeded to pick Abyss. The 2nd time someone asked if I waned to play AB-ee-ISS (pretty sad that there was a 2nd time, with someone else, no less) I knew what they meant.

Several people I know also say (dub-eye-dub) for Dub-I-Dub, as in the way you’d pronounce “dubbing” a tape. But if you just listen to the song, the whole thing is (“doob-ee-doob”).

What’s with some people? So what else has anyone heard grotesquely mispronounced in the DDR world?

I pronouce Paranoia KCET like "Kay-set". Never heard anyone call this song by any name.

"Aoi Shoudou" usually leaves people going "......huh?"

This one guy always calls Tsugaru "tsu-GARR-u"... it's just "Tsu-ga-ru"

This is not a DDR song but it pisses me off when people call Pokemon "PO-KEE-MON" Alright, they went to all that trouble to put the dash over the e, why the hell are people still pronoucing it KEE instead of KAY

Everyone here pronounces it like that (if they say KCET instead of Clean Mix).

People screw up the Japanese names all the time. Like saying "sa-KUR-a" instead of "SAK-u-ra".

So then would Y31 be "Yei" (yay)?

And would R10K be "Riok"? Or "Rioooo"? laugh.gif

FACT: Most English speakers can't pronounce Japanese words. Even the simple ones......

"Aoi"... Three syllables.... Three vowels you know how to pronounce. People try to slur them together though.
Ah - Oh - EE

(Also, the `u`'s in "Shoudou" just make the `o`'s long vowels in Japanese... ignore them in English).

I once knew a guy who didn't know who `Nah - Oh - Kee` was. When I presented to him Dynamite Rave, he said, "oohh... you meant `Nay - Oh - Kee`

Most veteran players can identify songs like KAKUMEI, Aoi Shoudou, and possibly Mahou no Tobira, but few ever refer to MATSURI JAPAN as.... MATSURI JAPAN. Most people act like the name `JAPAN` is an alternative to the Japanese word that precedes it (`MATSURI`... it means festival...).

Imagine if there were people who said "Let's play AMERICA!!" when they actually meant, "Livin' in America." You'd think them strange. Then why is it normal to call MATSURI JAPAN.... just JAPAN?

The only one I've ever really noticed was Tsugaru.

"soo-guh-roo" not "soo gah-roo" <~IMO

Whats the pronunciation for Kakumei? Is it "kak-oo-may"?

Technically, it's `TSU - GAH - ROO` (but the R is pronounced like a Spanish unrolled R).

`KAH - KOO - MAY`

Kakumei - "kah-KOO-may"

Quote:

Actually - it'd be pronounced "SA-ku-ra". Since the pronunciation is cut apart by syllable.

Konami would be pronounced ("ko-NAH-me"). Not ("kuh"). the "ko" syllable is pronounced the way it's spelled. So Konamix would be pronounced ("ko-NAH-mix").

Just trying to clear up a little confusion on this. riiight.gif

My friend and I were joking about PARANOiA KCET (clean mix) and if it should be pronounced "Kay-Set". We agreed "Kay-Set" is the way to go, but considered "Kay-Ket" which for some reason was really funny and we laughed for like 10 minutes.

I've heard Tsugaru pronounced "Tsu-GARR-u." I use "Tsu-GUH-ru."

And possibly the most strange was when I heard someone pronounce AM-3P "Am-thrimp"..... Just kidding. That never happened. riiight.gif

Actually, I'm pretty sure that, since the "u" is generally considered the silent vowel in Japanese (like "e" is here), "Kakumei" is pronounced more like "KAH-koo-may." Same reason "Sakura" isn't pronounced "Sah-KOO-rah." I've heard a couple of Japanese people pretty much not pronounce the 'u' in words, so they come out more like "Kak-may" and "Sak-ra," though.

Unless you meant that as a common mispronounciation, in which case, I'm sorry. >_>

I have fun with Japanese songs. One time I put it on Matsuri Japan, and this guy behind me asked what song it was, so I replied with "Matsuri Japan" "What?" "Matsuri Japan" "Oh... ok..."

Also, quite often when I'm going with someone and I ask them if they mind if go on Daikenkai, they'll agree, then when I go to it they ask me what it is, and I just sort of look at them and say "Daikenkai..."

Sakura - (Sa- ku - ra)
JaneJana - NOT (JANE - JANE - A) it's (zha - nay - zha -nah)
Kakumei - (Ka - ku - may)
bag - (bag)
DXY! - (Dee - Ex - Why - Exclamationpoint)

And then there's the classic one "Gra - joo - al - is - tic - sy - bur"

I once heard a kid say "Play "Love Gibberish"."...He was referring to "Love Sugar"

But the single worst mispronunciation I ever heard was "ah"...referring to "A"...*SMIZZACK*

You're pretty much correct, except the "u" isn't really silent, it's just slurred into the word. Most native Japanese people who've been speaking the language their entire life, grew up speaking it, just like we grew up speaking English. We use all kinds of slang terms to shorten what we're trying to say, like: "How ya doin'?" instead of "How are you doing?" It's just like that. Instead of "Ka-ku-mei,"
it's more like "Ka-ku-mei.

It's just like saying: "Nandesuka?", which is how it's pronounced, instead of "Nandesu ka?"
Get it?

BTW, "Nandesu ka" means "What is it?" in Japanese.

THANK YOU! I realize myself it's nothing to do with DDR. But it annoys me just as much. I'm glad that there's someone else who feels this way.

Just to let those out there know, even though I seem passionate about such a subject, it means nothing. I care nothing for Pokemon anymore, it just still annoys me that they call it kee.

How about this? The general consensus I see here is that Stoic is stoyk. However, let me show you something:

Hmmm, looks like a dictionary (the official source for pronunciations and words) disagrees. Sorry, but the it's pronounced stow - ick. Sorry if I sounded a little harsh, it just bothered me that it was being mispronounced in a thread about mispronunciation.

EDIT - Sorry about the post whoring.
