We didn't change anything. Anyway, we will be experimenting with caching software (Zend Performance Suite) this week and next to see if it will improve speed. Hopefully it will do wonders.

I've implemented some caching in the index page of phpBB and the viewforum.php page. As a side effect, the index page might be a little unsynchronized sometimes (at most it will be 5 minutes off). Hopefully this will help with the server speed.

*nod* It's unsynchronized in a funny way, too. It will show that there are new posts in a particular forum, but the author's name is the person BEFORE the last to post.

Not a big deal at all, of course, I just thought I'd mention it in case someone freaks out over it and doesn't know what's going on.

What do you mean by "does not work at all"? It doesn't load...?

I've had that problem, too. There was a 2 day period recently where I went to DDRFreak and waited somewhere around 10 minutes before closing the window and doing something else.

Then I asked Remy if he was able to get on, he says yes, and BAM. It loads within a minute. *shrug*

I seem to be experiencing a really weird but similar problem. EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to load a page, it waits a few seconds, starts loading, then the transmission speed drops to about 1KB/s, pauses for about 20 seconds, skyrockets to nearly double the original speed for about 2 seconds, then the cycle repeats until the page finishes loading. So now it takes two minutes per page thanks to the pauses.

Basically the internet screen wouldn't load the DDRFreak site and it wouldn't load at all.I kept on pressing Refresh/F5 and it wouldn't work at all.Maybe this was the time when you guys were switivhing servers or something? E19.gif

I have implemented caching for most of the sections of the site. You should notice a pretty large speed improvement. Right now it's kind of a hack, so you may experience slowness for several minutes after the hour turns, but for the most part, it should be faster. We will work on a more permanent solution in the next couple of weeks.

It's better now, but the past few days, the site has still been pretty slow. And even tonight still, I'll get the random "Page cannot be displayed" error, I refresh and its fine. Also, that "slight delay" you talked about.. it's a lot more than 5 minutes. For instance, I've had it say person A had the newest post at 1:27 am in a forum, and when I go there, it shows person B having the newest post @ 1:42 am (and this is about 1:50).

Just letting you know, that caching thing delays things a lot more than you initially anticipated.

The past few days doesn't matter--I implemented it today.

What "Page cannot be displayed" error? I am not aware of that.

And the "slight delay" problem... You most likely viewed the page before 1:47. If the newest post is 1:42 am, and the previous post was 1:27 am, the 1:27 am post will show up until the cache refreshes, which will be at the latest 1:47. So this is still a 5 minute delay.

it happens from time to time...
you open a topic, a forum, try to reply, to create a new topic... whatever... and then you get the classic page which says "Page cannot be displayed" and some more stuff on it, press your F5 key (IE) and then everything´s all right...

I thought I was the only one dealing with it riiight.gif

If that happens again, note the time it takes place. If it happens 5 minutes past the hour, I may know why it's happening.

Basically it happens as P-Chan explained it,but also sometimes when I'm trying to get to the actual site-ddrfreakDOTcom.It says that error key and on the bottom it says that the server may be busy or try clicking the refresh button(F5).

Please read my explanation of the apparently longer than 5 minute delay to MSD. If the last real post was made less than 5 minutes ago, the index will not have that information. Instead, it will have the information about the post made just before that, which has no time limit.

For example.

The time is now 7:00 pm.
The last person to make a post made one at 6:40 pm.
You decide at 7:01 pm to make a post.
If you look at the index, it will tell you that the last post was at 6:40.
If you wait until 7:06, then it will tell you that the last post was made at 7:01.

From 7:01 till 7:06, it is possible that it will display the last post at 6:40. This is still a 5 minute delay, not a 25 minute one. The delay is NOT measured by subtracting the latest real post and the indexed last post. Instead, the delay is between the latest real post and the current time.

Well I thought I would let you all know that it is 1:53 Central right now and it says for instance last post was made at like 1:15am and the latest post is actually 1:47am. Dunno if you knew about this or something is being done but I thought I would let you know since you wanted to.
