First off... is the mp3 within DDR-able length? About 1:15 to 2:00 should be fine, probably.

Then (some people don't like it, but I find it useful) download XStep.

http://www.thomasscott.net/xstep/xstep-1-0-1.zip

It has a 100-bar limit, but it's also got some useful tools, as long as you have Winamp 2.x. If you don't, download it.

http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/client/winamp291_lite.exe

XStep is fairly easy to use. It might be somewhat limited, but it's good enough for beginners, I'd say.

I find it easier to use the editor in SM instead of X-Step, just make a folder for your MP3 use x-step just to create the blank DWI file, then go into SM and use the edit program in there it's much easier IMO.

Go on Kazaa and download Cool Edit. Use "cool edit" to shorten your song, amplify the volume, fade out the ending, whatever. Oh and also use cool edit to find the time when the first beat occurs, this will be your offset and cool edit can really get an accurate time. Use WinBPM to get a near accurate measurement of the BPM(s) of the song. Then open up another .dwi file and just change the data around. I find it useful to throw down a bunch of single beat steps, cut and paste so that it fills the entire song. Then use the Stepmania CVS editor to do everything else. You have to play around with it but it's awesome. Well the single beat arrows should let you know if your BPM and offset are accurate enough, use the tick assist to confirm. Then it's all a matter of creativity, you can do up to 1/32 steps with CVS and if you need anything more there are ways to do it in the .dwi file itself.
Hope that helps, I'm still working on my first song but I'm nearly done. It's over 5 mins long, edited from 7:30 but I did not want to mutilate the song since it's primarily for ME. Later
