I've used my EMS USB adapter for the past month without difficulties, but today, my pad didn't register in StepMania. I went to Device Manager\Other Devices and now the USB Device has an exclamation point across it. "The drivers for this device are not installed."

I removed the device and tried to reinstall the drivers (08-01-2002). I copied the files from the disk to my hard drive and ran setup.exe. It seemed to install, stopping once to prompt me whether or not I wanted to replace GCHAND.DLL. (At this point in the process, which I've done several times, I have said "yes" and "no" with no difference in results.) I rebooted (and later, repeated and didn't reboot, again, no difference) and plugged the EMS USB adapter into my PC. Windows brings up New Hardware Found and the Add New Hardware Wizard tries to locate software/drivers for it. It never finds any: "Windows was unable to locate software for this device." The USB Device in Device Manager still says "The drivers for this device are not installed."

According to the readme file on the disk, "if the adapter has been plugged in before the software was installed find the joystick properties in the Device Manager (Under 'HID') and select the Drivers 'Update...' button. Windows will then indicate that it has found a better driver in '.../EMSUSB.INF'." I searched my hard drive and couldn't find EMSUSB.INF.

I don't know why the adapter stopped working, and I have no clue how to remedy the situation. Can anyone please solve my problem?

This happens to me every now and then. All you should need to do is unplug it and plug it back in. It should recognize it when you plug it back in. It doesn't work to try reinstalling the drivers.
