It was metal tape, purely cosmetic and they don't put it on any more. The sides are the end grand of the particle board, the second pad we got has blakc paint. Yes the metal tape comes off, splits, etc, but since it's cosmetic it's not a big deal. The biggest problem we've had is it made a button go flaky because a peice of the tape had come up and was touching the contacts. once the bit was removed, we were back to normal.

This is not something to worry about.

I've been a CF owner for 8 months, playing almost everyday. I haven't even had to clean them yet.

The baseboard isn't particle board, its melamine (according to their site...)

Anyways, the only issue I've had is that when I stepped on the center, the sheetmetal would push up and hit the edge of the up arrow, triggering it. Somewhat annoying... so I put a little spacer of velcro there, no problems now. And no, there is no aluminum siding. Everyone I know says the pad rocks, but some question the pricing.
