Well, a DDR tourney happened a little while back here in Cleveland, OH, and the Freestyle vids are up..
http://oni.lavender-skye.net/
Just look around. Now I'm going to be honest, we're NOWHERE as good as you Northern Californian freestylers, but that's since we don't have huge competition coming here. But anyways......Xenon was the one I was in. I'm the one with the tail. My partner forgot his stuff half way through, and we both got thrown off by that. Ahh well.. Enjoy the wreckage, folks!

You North Cal people frick own! I bow down to you all! I hope to come to a N. Cal tourney one day just to try and go against you guys.
Oh, and by the wya, I've only been freestyling since late May, early June. I've placed in 2 out of the 3 tournies. 1st I took 2nd place, the 2nd one (Dance Fever) I took 1st SOMEHOW (I didn't deserve it), and 3rd tourney is the one on the videos. The orders of the winners are 1st place: Copa de Vida (Brad and Dave) 2nd: Cowgirl (Tim & Nico) 3rd: Celebrate (Brad again) |

I'm a freestyler, and I'm not that good - but I'm the best around here, and that's the problem. I play in Dublin, Ireland and we have a few technical players but I haven't got any freestyling competition. And without competition, you don't progress.
I'm trying to improve - anybody got any ideas for keeping it going without anybody to play against, in a place where kneedrops and handslaps are still new and exciting moves (I wish I was kidding)..... |
I feel ya. It's the same where I live, few FSers, the rest PAers. The thing is, you have to branch out of your "home" arcade and move to other places where there is freestyling. I love to freestyle, but I stopped doing it in arcades because nobody gets into freestyling, and nobody else does it.
For me, entering tournaments keeps you motivated to come up with bigger and better stuff.I stay motivated by aiming to do better for an upcoming tournament.
That's my $1.00-$0.98 _________________

I am the opposite now. I used to focused on the competetion of making a new breakthrough routine. But now I play at a local arcade that has an influx of people (a much smaller version of a Six Flags, called Adventureland) and hardly anyone else plays there. _________________

Man! Sliding is really difficult with my shoes for some reason!! Maybe it's just the crappy pad I play on at my arcade, but I'm sure my shoes aren't helping. Can anyone reccomend a pair of shoes with a lower ammount of friction, so it doesn't feel like your feet are naturally stuck to the pad? _________________

I've found New Balance's to be pretty good for sliding, among other things. They are pretty flexible, compared to most skating shoes. Sure, they look cool, but your foot's gotta move, man. I recommend NB's or Adidas, as long as it's a good casual or running shoe. But also, you want it to look good, you don't wanna wear no grandpa shoes that look like they're country club issue or something |

Here's a question for some veteran of sorts. Has anyone ever done a FS routine to Sandstorm? I don't really have anything lined up, but thats why i come here, to read about new ideas! Speaking of new ideas, does anyone have any tips for a routine to Sandstorm. It may be a difficult song for me on maniac, but i'm determined, and the way i see it, thats all i need besides practice. Oh, and since I havent seen anyone else post this yet, Thanks to everyone who posted about FS tips. I know that it really helped me .

Back to a few posts, but I gotta agree that 5th Mix wuz prolly the last good Mix for FS... I'm not an avid DDR Player and considerin I'm in STL, FS is something no one can do here...
But lookin at EX, u can't really FS to Love Love Shine or Speed Over Beethoven. U prolly could, but I can't think of anything... But just out of curiosity, how bout FSin to Sakura or Dance Dance Revolution?
I'm also wonderin what kind of music Sakura would go along w/? Everytime I hear it, I alwayz thing of a kabuki (sp?) theater or somethin for some weird reazon... Either that or two Sumo Wrestlerz goin at it... |

Well, I've analyzed your post and I think I know where the problem is.

As long as you don't freestyle for competetion, those are fine. But in competetion, kneedrops and handplants are old news. You need to find some breakthrough moves to make'em really impressed.
But for a crowd that doesn't know about the game, go nuts. _________________

Xero called My Orion.78 Ameuro Mix Routine...
Quote: | HANDSLAPKNEEDROPHANDSLAPKNEEDROPHANDSLAPKNEEDROP |
I found that rather funny but for some part true...
Anyway, Maniac_Mike. Yes, those techniques are old hack in tourneys, but I good stepping stone for beginners (Though you didn't disclose how long you've been freestyling)
Since you HAVE memorized the steps that is perfect grounds to make something a little more spectacular...maybe even comedic (If you ever aim for that) Just don't try to fit too much into 1:30 *Cough*WITCHDOCTOR*COUGH*
Additionally, I have taken note that you should try your very very very hardest to not look like you're even on a DDR pad. If you can do that and still hit a vast majority of the steps, or at least even half of them, I'd say you'd be in pretty good shape. _________________

fresstyling is fun heres a couple of moves i like to use when Fsing
Spin:self explanitory
Slide:moving your foot from arrow to another without lifting it looks good when done mutiple times in a row (sorta like moon walking)
Groundwork:do not mix this up with handslaps and kneedrops.a hand slap or kneedrop does not look good alone. It looks much better if u did something such as handrop to knee to spin then get back up.
Switching pads (vs. mode) look for 4 up arrows or down arrows in a row. one person uses both feet to hit all the arrows on both pads while the other slowly slides across. on the last up or down just simply switch/
Going Through bar: look for right down or left down . hit right with ur right foot (or left with ur left) then slide through the bar and hit the down arrow on the way through. tricky but you will get it
i gotta stop giving away all my moves in forums like these

I would love to get into freestyling, although only 2 things stop me..1) the northwest is the last place freestyle will ever spring up, and 2) i don't have a home version to practice on (right now..when college starts that will change) I've got some pretty damn cool ideas (at least to me)..so I guess I'll see where it goes from there.. _________________

Frozen CaffMaj, don't worry if NOBODY else does it where you are - just get going! There isn't a single other FSer over here in Dublin, Ireland. I'm not only the first, but when styling in the arcade the other day another player thought I was just taking the piss (except I was getting all the steps). The concept didn't even occur here till I started, and now the crowds are mine.
If you're FreeStyling, you'll have to be pretty immune to what other people think anyway. Finally, if you start, it WILL have sprung up there. (Won't do it 'cos it hasn't started + hasn't started 'cos you won't do it = Catch 22).
Who needs a home mat to practice? You can practice the moves at home if you want, getting your body used to moving like that, checking that your ideas are actually possible. Then just bring them out at the arcade - start light and work up.
Long live FreeStyle! Go all isolated FreeStylers everywhere!
(lemme know how it works out for you)[/i] _________________

I practice in my dorm room with 4 squares with crappilly drawn arrows.
It's ghetto, but it works.
What's helping me with my Bag routine right now is printing out the step chart, numbering each arrow and then writing down what I'm supposed to do and how to move on each one.
If you do write it down, it REALLY helps to break the entire thing down into easy to memorize sections |
