Yeah, that was my original idea, actually. And I think that's what was used in the auctioned homemade controller. The problem is that I can't find any of the small ones like he used.

Mine's finished as well!
I couldn't find plastic sheets or circles to use for the buttons, but I did find wood circles that were almost the exact size needed, so i used those and painted them.
The pad LOOKS like crap, but it actually plays pretty well. I got the Competition pushbuttons from Happ controls, and Used 2 screws to secure the wood extensions to the plastic. It works pretty well. The only response problem I have is with the left Green button. If you press it directly at the top of the button, it won't respond because the pushbutton isnt' getting pushed straight down.
Also, I'm not that good at Pop'n yet, so I cant' test it on any Hyper songs or anything. The best song I can do is US Dance-pop on Normal (this is Pop'n Music 5, btw). And possibly Heart (Pink Rose) is a bit harder. _________________

How would you wire a tap light? I could probably find some that are about that size, but I doubt I could ever figure out how to get them working. It brings up a good idea though. |

You'd have to mount a few microswitches of your own. The included switch is an on/off type, and it's mounted at the edge.

Question is, are there tap lights that small? The only tap lights I've seen were 5 inches in diameter. The Pop'n buttons are 3 7/8" in diameter. Tap lights are quite large, indeed....
Also, Pepsi (or would you prefer Owen?), do you know where that guy got all the Pop'n buttons for 80 bucks?
Now that I have my ASC made (as lackluster as it is), 80 bucks won't be much for authentic buttons, rather than crappy wooden discs >_< _________________

it would occur to me using standard happ controls buttons would be far easier, and they come with wirings for the lights on the inside. _________________

If you had read the thread you would also realize how damn expensive they are too. _________________

Unless you're doing this on a budget that would make "Clerks" look like waterworld, it's rather negligable. Given the amount of wear and tear that the sensors would take? Yes, it's somewhat expensive, but, in the end it's VERY worth it. And it's arcade accurate. And it'll still come under the price of an ASC. _________________

It's not $250 worth it. At that point, I might as well buy an ASC, and that's what I'm trying to avoid in the first place, since they're so expensive. At $30 per button, that's definitely not negligible.

I'll be. I always thought that was for a different part. I kept looking at the large round switch. But I still think it's worth it.
After shipping, handling, tax, and any other middleman, 250 is almost going to be half the price of an ASC. _________________

The large round buttons would be somewhat close. I'm tempted to try that, but I don't have any funds at the moment.

I found Tap Lights at K-mart. Tiny ones about 4" each. They come in boxes of 6 for around 5$. The only thing is they don't stick up as high as the actual buttons seem to. I did however make an ASC controller out of them. Works pretty well. I'll post what I did if anyone asks (alot of typing would be involved). I thought this game looked like fun and I sure was right. Just bought Pop'n Music 7 and am having a blast. I'm not very good yet but I am getting there.
I also found tap lights at Walmart that look just like the picture of the Pop'n buttons. They are called UFO tap lights. They had little LED lights around the edge of the tap light and they stick up pretty high. I plan to make a controller out of them but I scoured 3 walmarts in my area and came up with ONE of them. They are around 4$ each. Everyone was sold out. So I had to get them special ordered. I will take pictures of these things with my crappy digital camera and post pictures soon. I left them at a friends house where I usually end up playing.

Please do.
I'm getting bored with the small controller. |

Ok I made up small page on what I did. Keep in mind I made these instructions in a rush so it doesn't have many pictures. My digi cam is bad too, so the pictures are pretty bad quality. Will have a picture of what it looks like done (which isn't pretty) when I get around to it. But for what it cost me I works very well. Only had to fiddle with it once so far and that was only because I didn't tighten a screw enough. Will update it when I have time.
Here you are:

BTW, thanks to everyone in the previous posts that gave measurements and button maps. They were a GREAT help!

The UFO lights look like they stick up pretty high, higher than the actual Pop'n buttons. I would probably use the tap lights you got from K-Mart instead.
Edit: Then again it just may be the picture. What is the height of the UFO lights? I can let you know what the Pop'n buttons height is.

The UFO lights are about 1 1/2" high. I just like the look of the UFO lights better. The tap lights I got from K-mart are more like the actual buttons ,or at least they look it from pictures I've seen. The UFO lights are more like the buttons used by the guy that has the picture in the first post of this thread. I haven't decided what to do. But it won't hurt having two controllers around. |

Hey LD, where in Wal-mart did you find the UFO Light? And where did you hear about them in the first place? Cause I've been to two Wal-marts so far, and no one in those stores knew about UFO Lights. I also checked Walmart.com to no avail......are these things even made anymore? _________________

Oh, heh, btw LD - when you put my name in your tutorial, put it as "Andy=~Neko~". That's what the Japanese text says, and it usually doesn't show up on most sites that aren't Japanese-enabled. _________________
