I would consider it a sub-sport. It's not played in big arena's with bleachers and stuff that people can watch. (Yes, many people watch chess which is a sport). We do have tournaments though, and many people play it. There is no "National Dance Dance Revolution Association (or team)". Even though sub-sport is right in between non-sport and sport, I would say it's more toward the sport side of things. _________________

If DDR became mainstream enough, I suppose it can be a sport. |

Chess is an intellectual sport. Outwit your opponent.
DDR is just a fun game (like bowling) which cannot become a sport because it is governed by copyrights and such by music authors and Konami.
Even without those limitations, it would only be considered as much a sport as playing Halo or something, or like DDR tourneys are run now. |

They said there was no room on the moutain for snowboards. Now we are winning gold medals for it. I dont think we will see DDR on ESPN but the local competitions will remain. |

by definition it is definitely a sport! however people will always have their opinions regardless. There are many ways to think this through supporting both sides so really its all personal opinion. I personally think it could definitely be a sport... i mean, its competitive, good exercize, and the fact that its electronic doesnt cancel the "sport" out of it. Just think of it as props or aids to the sport |

I'm not sure
If it's not a sport it's definately a way to warm up for sports! It really would help you with track, football, cheerleading, all the sports that you need strong leg muscles for!
i think this is funny. I told my gym teacher about it and he said he was thinking aout buying one for the students. I encouraged him, but then he said it was too much money

Chess can be considered a game because it is a computer game as well as a person to person game. Chessmaster is run by a computer, as is DDR. (Random thought: I wish Yahoo! Messenger had emoticons like these.....)[/b] _________________

Wow, I thought the guy who put this up would get flamed, thank you guys for not telling him off and expressing your opinions, many thanks. Anyway going about the topic:
Sport n. (spôrt, sprt)
a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
b. A particular form of this activity.
2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
3. An active pastime; recreation.
Going off this definition/information we can conclude that it is a sport, it certainly has a set of rules (mods can change the rules and make it more intresting; proves that it is a sport more so), It is competitive and it does involve physical exertion and skill(s). This proves that officially no matter what opinions people may express it is a sport. People in other sports may argue that it is not, for they believe it has taken them more time to acquire a skill in that certain sport. Although, people who play and love this game have taken time out of their lives to acquire the skill(s) to go above and beyond their limit of athleticism. It also takes just as much strategy as any other sport and as much, no, even more stamina than some of the "sports" out there that are "official" I'm not going to point fingers at any sport in general. So, finally, a smart explanation towards my opinion upon this topic, if you can prove your opinion with facts or personally show a foil towards this fact/opinion by all means write it. I just want to set the limits for how a topic should be proven.
Thank You |

Then why don't you go join your school's DDR team? Oh, you can't? Why is that? That's right, because it isn't a sport. It is just a video game you play in the arcade. The skills you acquire are analagous to the skills you acquire playing Tekken 4.
Also, don't try proving things with loose definitions off dictionary.com |

I thought that too, but my friend told me he watched people freestyle on a DDR machine on ESPN.

PolarisIIDX, your logic conveys the message that if a school doesn't have a team for a specific activity, that activity is not a sport. My school doesn't have a rugby team. Does this mean rugby is not a sport? According to your logic, the answer is rugby is not a sport. Obviously, this logic is flawed. We know this because rugby is a sport.

Loose definitions? Jonathan948 found the definition of a sport and then compared the definition to the facts we know about DDR. Since we all know the dictionary is never incorrect, the only possible way jonathan948 could have gone wrong are with the facts he used to conclude DDR is a sport. Since we know he correctly used facts about DDR, he is correct.
Words do have meanings. A dictionary can tell you the meaning of every word. If you think a word (sport) means something, but the dictionary tells you the meaning of that word is otherwise, guess who is correct? What you think a word means is not always correct. The media may have played with your mind about what you think a sport is.
Remember, if you're going to argue with me about this you're probably going to be arguing with the dictionary. Although, feel free to say what you think.
Speaking of openness:
