Beat Gear is a company that failed horribly at providing an arcade-authentic platform. The company claims that 100 were produced, but if I remember right only three can be confirmed to have actually shipped. They certainly didn't have any problems with design, though. Two of the three confirmed shipments were to this one guy that did a full review of them, and he was pleased. I forget who it was |

Where have you seen machines for $1,400?
One of the reasons I'm trying to do this is because I couldn't find a double pad for purchase. Even if I had done so, I'd wager that it would be more than I'd be willing to pay.
EDIT: Yeah, I should probably mention that I'm a 22 year old who runs a family computer company which has been around since 1985. I started doing tech calls for Mac desktops when I was 12 years old and have been working here ever since. My father knows a Russian with a factory in Taiwan which needs business which is why we fancy this can be made real.
Check out our website here: Starship Corp. Website. Right now we sell Cisco and other networking hardware, host websites on our T1 line, sell Altigen phone systems, and, as you can tell, pursue any venture which looks like it could yield a profitable business. We used to host game servers for Counter-Strike and other games, but people stealing bandwidth from their companies killed that industry.
My friends and I (who also work here) have been designing DDR pads for over a year, thinking and rethinking the designs which have been used in the past. If we can pull off our design, it will be completely unique, utilizing a sensor system which is vastly different yet equally effective.
I'm once again getting ahead of myself here, but I just wanted to explain who I am and where I'm coming from.

4th mixes are probably harder to find, since they certainly aren't being made anymore and could only be found in Japan except in the case of import.
Did you see a DOUBLE pad for cheaper than $1,400? I still think $1,400 is too much, but it would at least make me consider it.

The kid is very, very, very rich. He lives in the Woodlands area near Houston, which is one of the richest neighborhoods in the country. Whether he owns his own company or not isn't clear to me, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's true. But, his pads sound like a total rip-off. 24k gold plated switches, with 40 under each panel? Give me a break. And something about NASA quality steel used on the pad, and no tire marks after a Hummer peeled out on it. Either he's lying out of his ass, or he's going to charge around $1000 per pad. As for the one week of no flaming, it was a joke from TK, but I'll most likely be turning my back on any flaming if he doesn't produce his pads.
The pads Smash_Brother is producing sounds a lot more legit to me. If I ever get enough money, I'd be interested in buying some. |

Erm, first of all, NASA-quality steel would be severe overkill, especially if you're trying to conserve cost. I'm sure I could have my pads built out of titanium-alloy, ensuring that they're 100% bulletproof, but there's no point to that when regular steel will do JUST fine.
Second, if a vehicle of any kind is going to peel out on your pad and leave no rubber behind, that would indicate that the pad has zero abrasiveness. The only arcade near me has pads which have been used for so many years that they are smooth enough that shoes will still slide on them slightly. These pads should brace the rubber on your shoe when you slam your foot onto them, allowing you to hit the next step as quickly as possible. You're not always going to be hitting the pad from the top DOWN: I know I hit from an angle a GREAT deal, especially when I'm hitting an up+left immediately followed by a down+right. There will ALWAYS be some angle of incident which is why the pad needs to brace rubber, and ideally, bare feet for the barefoot players.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I'm still just trying to establish a price point here.
Oh, and Tomo, I saw your post on Maniax. Please, don't bring him here. This will just wind up being a flamewar if he comes here.

It will be able to hold as much as the arcade pad, if not more. I'm aiming for authenticity here more than anything else. I consider the 1/4" lip around all of the buttons to be a design flaw, but in order to be accurate to the arcade, we'll have to include it in the design.

Unless he intends to build thousands of them, I don't see a cause for concern.

Well, if this pad is as good as it sounds, I'd probably be willing to pay $200-300 for singles, and $400-500 for doubles. I would pay more, but most pads are expensive as it is, and a lot of people don't exactly have the money to pay for the really flashy ones (e.g. CobaltFlux).
What I'm mainly concerned about is that if it is made and sold for use, how much would the shipping costs be? I can afford most pads easily, until it gets to the shipping cost (I live in N. Ireland, UK and it's NOT fun to be told it's $300 for SHIPPING as well as another $300 odd for the actual pad from CobaltFlux). |

I can't determine shipping yet as I don't know how much it will weigh. I will say that, given the concept for its design, it should weigh significantly less than an actual arcade pad.
We do international shipping, no problem. I've heard DHL is the best for international, but I'm not sure about how well they handle freight.
