I'm suprised Konami didn't want to be associated at all. They could have even been a sponsor or something, you know?
Just wondering, was this an issue with KoA or KoJ? Or both? KoJ would seem more logical, but legalities are funny like that...
Guys, keep in mind that these could have easily been Solo 2k, Disney's Rave, or Pump, hey, even Britney's Dance Beat like someone mentioned. Be glad that it is a real DDR mix that isn't actually half bad. |

To anyone interested in finding out more about the Dance Fever tournament or how the Chicago event went, please go to:
http://sakura-chan.web1000.com/Dance%20Fever%20-%20Home.htm
I was there personally and took a few pictures, along with adding in a few details, which will hopefully add some insight on what the heck this Dance Fever thing is anyway.
Also, way to go Praster! Good job so far! |

JoeReborn: The tournament didn't attract any non-players, this is in Chicago, as big of a city as any. I doubt too many newbies will get interested in DDR through this. They actually made it seem rather boring...

So... question for those who were there. I'm not the best DDR player by any stretch of the term. I AA any song on basic, can AA or pass most songs on trick, and can only pass a select few maniac songs. How out of place would it be for me to enter this tournament? I realized I have no hope of winning, but I just wanted to know whether you guys thought I could advance to round 2 or not. _________________

Who picks the songs that are to be played?
Is it worth going to if my wire and I can't do any cata's? We can only do most 7's and a select few 8's.
I just want to know if it is worth our time to drive 3 hours to the Great Lakes mall in Michigan when it comes there next Friday.
Thanks for any info. |

The tournament was originaly intended for players of all skill levels. If you can't pass catas, don't go to the tournament just for the prize. There might not even be catas played, but there WILL be players better than you. However, it's a lot of fun just to play them on freeplay, so go for the fun of it if you want. I know I did and enjoyed it.
Thought get! Actually, if you are close to the mall that you would go to, you probably know the local DDR players and know if they can beat you. If you are far away, find the boards where the locals hang out and try to get a sense of how good they are. There's a chance that in some markets/regions, no one will be able to pass catas.
Oh, and to the person who asked about who picks the songs: Praster does, but I'm sure you can have a little say in that if you talk to him before the tournament. Maybe not a certain song, but if you don't want it to be too hard for you or something... I trust his judgement anyways. |

To answer some of the recent questions about the Dance Fever tournament:
1) Who picks the songs for the tournament?
Answer: The tournament staff, players are not allowed to even touch the game machines during the tournament.
2) How good is the competition? Should I even bother entering?
Answer: Depends on your area and when the event will be held. There will always be somebody better than you, in theory, at the tournament. So go into it with a positive attitude and practice, practice, practice, especially if you want to win this tournament. Learn to AAA all your 1-2 footer songs (or come darn close), since that's all you have to play to advance into the Semi-final round. Next, practice your Maniac songs for the Semi's and Finals, as they played only 7-9 footers for those rounds in Chicago. And unless something changes, they will be using Solo 4th Mix machines.
One side note to make, even if you aren't that good or are under 18 and cannot compete in the tournament, still show up. There will be free DDR before and after the tournament, along with plenty of free promo items from ABC Family and any other sponsors at the event. If nothing else, you'll play some DDR and maybe even make some new friends.
Lastly, TiVotj, thanks for the praise on my site for Dance Fever. I just uploaded some new pics and updated some of the info on the site. For a complete inside look at the Chicago event, including pics and plenty of info, go to: http://sakura-chan.web1000.com/Dance%20Fever%20-%20Home.htm

ARR.
You guys should read some of the previous posts before asking a question!
JoeReborn: Not quite. Calling DDR "mainstream" goes a long way. It's nice that DDR gets exposure in areas that it's less popular in, but it's nothing effective in places like NYC, Chicago, LA, LV, STL, and so forth. In Chicago's case, GameWorks is literally next door to the mall that Dance Fever was held in. Most people around here have at least heard of DDR. Most people that came for the free play, I'm guessing, have played at home already.
Also, newbies aren't going to be very attracted to try a game, where the machines are set up in WIDE OPEN VIEW of like hundreds of onlookers in the middle of a mall.
Besides, the more newbies the better. The only thing I think sucks about DDR becoming more "mainstream" is that it attracts a lot of kids with disgusting egos (as if it's not too late for that). _________________

Wow...ABC really did "re-do" those DDR machines. Thank you SakuraClow!
The tournament sounds like it's a lot more fair than the original plans. I'm glad the dubbed Maniac song plan was dumped. I have one gripe about the new tourney though:
If the comp is supposed to promote DDR and be playable by non-players, then why are the Semi and Finalists doing 7-feet songs to Catas? Where's the logic in that? If you want to get good dancers that have no DDR skills on the show, then you should at least give these players a quick lesson or some sort of handicap.
I'm still showing up, for the free play (all day long! YAAY!), the goodies, and the small chance (it said "in seleect markets" on the ABC website, so I'm not giving my hopes up) to meet MC Hammer... _________________

All the competitors were able to pass them, so where was no point in having them still doing 1-foot songs. |

On TV they make it sound like a REAL dance comp. I wish they did it that way instead of machines... _________________

That's because on TV it is a REAL dance comp. The machines are only to promote the show, they don't actually have anything to do with the show itself. |

the "comp" was pretty lame. the URL floating around describes it pretty well, why don't you just do yourself and read what was said there. Since I work a normal career kind of job, I couldn't even get to the damn woodfield mall until around 8:15pm, so I only caught the last round.
I'm going to have to agree with everyone who believes this won't attract any new players... anyone who's never played that stood or sat and watched the bar hugger gameplay.. to say the least.. it wasn't pretty. I should've grabbed my camera to take a couple shots of it.. I don't really understand why they'd want to put a comp like this on television... I mean.. if they're going to use parts of the comps as lead-ins or whatever on this show... I think, if anything, DDR players are going to get ragged on even harder by people who've never played.
I just can't figure it out. How can you have two broken machines (one of the broken ones kinda worked.. cept for the fact the screen had this nasty strobing effect whenever you stepped on the platform) on the FIRST stop of the tour?
All in all.. it wasn't nearly worth making the 25 min trip from Chicago... cept for all those cute girls that seem to flock to that particular mall... okay, so I guess it was kinda worth it for the eye candy..
Were there any bigger crowds earlier in the day? Or was it just the smallish group size the whole time?
Oh.. and to answer someone's question about the whole 18 year old thing. To be legally bound to a contract (or legally claim a prize that is won in a game-show or other type of contest) in the US, you have to be at least 18 years old. They *could* have gotten around this with a guardian's signature for those under 18, but that introduces a huge list of headaches for their legal staff. Plus then they'd have to foot the bill for that guardian to go with on the trip, etc etc... it's just much simpler to only allow people who are legally able to vouch for themselves to enter. |

At the Indianapolis tournament, the machine with the broken screen fixed itself somehow after people played on it for a while. The screen stayed stable for the rest of the evening.
And I'd like to congratulate eveyone who entered the competition, especially my wife, malictus, and people from indyddr: absoluterage, maximagogo, hylian_diety, scottyevil, and others who I didn't catch the username of if they post there. My wife, malictus, and maximagogo all made it to the semi-finals. I came in a close 2nd place. No prize for me, but all the free play and the cd wallets and such were definitly worth it. _________________

another rumor is that the Contest will be played on Techno Motion Machines requiring an 8-pad. I doubt it's true, but until there's a definite on the machine, you gotta prepare for anything, 4-pad 5-pad(Pump) or 8... _________________
