What makes a Cata?

How do you know if A song is a Cata or not? Does it have to have that weird red lettering, does it have to be a certain difficulty, does it have to have a certain rating on the groove radar.....? Its just that everyone has a "Cata's AAed" on their signature, and i never know what they mean....

Cata is a 9 step difficulty. Like the little foots. Back in the 1st-3rd days songs had foot name ratings. 9step being called Catastrophic. Thus an abriviaition. another example. Exorhbitant. But I've never heard and abbrebviation for that! please read the dictionary. the one on this site of course!
