I've read a good deal of the soft pad thread, and I read the whole hard pad thread. This is what I've gathered so far:

Soft pads:
frown.gif poopy ones are like dancing on diapers (I've experienced this)
frown.gif They bunch up unless you mod them
frown.gif You can't get the redoctane ones on ebay
goog.gif There's 80% crap out there
E1.gif Cheaper
disgust.gif Wears out quicly (the less you spend is directly proportional to how long they'll last)

Hard pads:
erm.gif Expensive
E4.gif Nicer
devil.gif The acryllic can break
E1.gif If modified, can be as good/better? than the arcade
frust.gif some (CF) are waaaayyy too expensive for someone new like me to buy
frust.gif It's hard to tell which pads are which on ebay

So I stand in a dilema. I really like DDR. I've played for about a week or so now, on a home (diaper) pad at a friends (DDRMAX) and at the local mall's arcade (DDR EXTREME). I lost $10 to that machine tonight, and I decided that it's time to pony up and get a pad. I'm starting to get the hang of light songs... I do fours or fives and I do pretty good. I love kind lady, I played captain jack a lot tonight and I liked it a lot, though I didn't get above a C. I love watching good people too. One thing I noticed on the diaper pads as opposed to the arcade... I do a lot better on the hard arcade pad, and because of that I'm seriously considering getting a metal pad... but I also think the redoctane v2.0 might do me ok too. I'd just like to see what you guys have to say with this.

Also, on a lighter note, what games (other than DDRMAX) have Sandstorm?

Sandstorm is a DDRMAX (US version) exclusive song.

Well if your going to get a soft pad you are better off going with the redoctane v2 pad. It will most likely outlast any other soft pad out there.
Then again you can always save up the money and get a CF then you will never have to worry about buying another pad again.

I went down to my local babbages today and picked up DDRMAX and a diaper pad (yuck =P). When I got home... I duct taped the edges to the floor. That lasted quite well for the 4 hrs I played (read: sucked) for. I think I want to try to build my own pad. I have some friends who are very good with electronics and building stuffs... so it should be no problem. That sucks that sandstorm is exclusive... but now I wanna play captain jack on DDRMAX... =P Also, paranoia evolution is just... guh... I'll just say I keep trying... I find training mode to be very helpful too. But just... oh paranoia... you kill me.

Hehe. Keep playing, once you move onto standard, then finally Heavy you'll find out how much you've progressed.

Even though you already got a pad, i'll still make a comment:
There are other pads that are Iginition 2.0 but like a different companY? If you're interested I'll try to dig up a link somewhere.
Building a pad might be the best for you, it's cheaper than say.. a CF, and has other advantages such as it won't really need to be modded since it's your own design.

There are all these pads that are "ignition" or "ignation v2"... they're not redoctane just cheap knockoffs like the craapy naki diaper I have. It's a diaper... with six sensors in it... designed for dancing on. Yes... a dancing diaper E4.gif

Actually that's not always the case. Most of what I've heard is that the chepa ignitions are just as good as the redoctane ones. IMHO soft pads are a toss up, some work for a long time, some break right away. It's the luck of the draw. Example, my naki I have right now has outlasted 2 ignitions I bought. The naki is a month old and still going strong and the ignitions both broke in a week.

But your definite best bet is CF or home built.

If you take a look at all the softpads on the market you'll notice the best one is almost the cheapest one. Not only is it cheap, but it lasts long (I've had one of them for 6 months with maybe 1/2 of a ghost arrow and great accuracy)...

No, I'm not talking about the $99.99 Red Octane Ignition2.0 pad. No, I'm not talking about any MYMYBOX pad. No, I'm not talking about anything official by Konami. I'm talking about a mediocre 3rd party controller company called Mad Catz.

That's right. For $14.99-$19.99 you can own the most accurate, long lasting, and best softpad around. Not only are they cheap, but I've accomplished quite a bit with them:
Accomplished A's:
All 1 footers
All 2 footers
All 3 Footers
All 4 footers
All 5 footers
All 6 footers
All 7 footers
All 8 footers
Almost all 9 footers (Exotic Ethnic as an exception)
Passed Max 300

Email me for proof. I have pictures riiight.gif

If you want to spend more modding a madcatz pad than you spend on it, go ahead.

Also, on the Ignition 2.0 from RedOctane, I got it because everyone says they rock and last a long time. Well, I got mine in January, it was dead by March. $100 down the drain I should have spent on a CobaltFlux pad, which I now own. Definitely worth the money it costs. The thing does not break.
